  • From Charlemagne to Hitler: the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire and Its Symbolism
From Charlemagne to Hitler: The Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire and its Symbolism Dagmar Paulus (University College London) [email protected] 2 The fabled Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire is a striking visual image of political power whose symbolism influenced political discourse in the German-speaking lands over centuries. Together with other artefacts such as the Holy Lance or the Imperial Orb and Sword, the crown was part of the so-called Imperial Regalia, a collection of sacred objects that connotated royal authority and which were used at the coronations of kings and emperors during the Middle Ages and beyond. But even after the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, the crown remained a powerful political symbol. In Germany, it was seen as the very embodiment of the Reichsidee, the concept or notion of the German Empire, which shaped the political landscape of Germany right up to National Socialism. In this paper, I will first present the crown itself as well as the political and religious connotations it carries. I will then move on to demonstrate how its symbolism was appropriated during the Second German Empire from 1871 onwards, and later by the Nazis in the so-called Third Reich, in order to legitimise political authority. I The crown, as part of the Regalia, had a symbolic and representational function that can be difficult for us to imagine today. On the one hand, it stood of course for royal authority. During coronations, the Regalia marked and established the transfer of authority from one ruler to his successor, ensuring continuity amidst the change that took place.

Kieda, Dean of The Graduate School. ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the motif of the abandoned child as a symptom of postwar German memory culture in German literature and film from the late 1980s to the second decade of the 21st century. As part of German postwar memory culture, the abandoned child motif emerged in the early postwar years and established itself in German memory discourse as Kriegskind (war baby), while representing certain war- related experiences of victimization. This study focuses on the change the motif reflects against the backdrop of Germany’s unification, the surge toward normalization, and globalization. The abandoned child motif in German cultural texts at the end of the 20th and at the beginning of the 21st century is a threshold figure which is symptomatic of the past as well as the present, of the victim and the perpetrator, and of suffering as well as guilt.

  • The Ostmedaille: Commemoration and Memory of Germany's Eastern Front
THE OSTMEDAILLE: COMMEMORATION AND MEMORY OF GERMANY'S EASTERN FRONT RYAN SMOLKO March 4, 2017 Sebastián Bianchi Collection 1 The tradition of state or national governments bestowing medals or awards upon their soldiers as symbols of sacrifice, honor, and courage has existed for centuries. Medals and awards demonstrate that a soldier has gone above and beyond, that he is what his country considers an honorable, distinguished serviceman. Awards and medals, however, point as much to the country and government awarding them as they do to the quality of that country’s soldiers. Much like coins, medals contain images of national identity and propaganda.1 The awards a government presents to its soldiers speaks to how the government wants a war or its soldiers’ service to be remembered. The National Socialist government of Nazi Germany was no different; their medals and awards were a form of propaganda, memorializing different battles and fronts in whichever way the Nazi high command desired. The Ostmedaille exemplifies this point. The Ostmedaille, or German Eastern Front medal, serves as a symbol of how the German government wanted people to remember the Second World War on the Russian Front. The design and creation of the medal, as well as German sentiments surrounding the medal, demonstrate both the Nazi and the contemporary German memory of the Eastern Front. 1 There is a long scholarly tradition of coins as a form of propaganda. This is particularly true for ancient coinage, such as Roman coins. Coins were an effective way to spread information to the masses, especially before the advent of radio or newsprint.

IN SIGHT BUT OUT OF MIND: THE CONSTRUCTION OF MEMORY AT THREE ONCE STIGMATIZED SITES IN BERLIN AND POZNAŃ By Stephen Paul Naumann A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy German Studies 2012 ABSTRACT IN SIGHT BUT OUT OF MIND: THE CONSTRUCTION OF MEMORY AT THREE ONCE STIGMATIZED SITES IN BERLIN AND POZNAŃ By Stephen Paul Naumann This study explores cultural identity reflected in the urban landscape at three structures formerly identified with National Socialism: Berlin’s Olympiastadion (Olympic Stadium) and Siegessäule (Victory Column), and Poznań’s Zamek cesarski (formerly Kaiserschloss – or Imperial Castle). My analysis is based on local and state archival work, as well as the examination of literary, visual and media sources in both Germany and Poland. I conclude that after the structures were first used to project meaning from Cold War tropes, both tourism and the enhancement of local identity in the face of European and global influences eventually contributed to the shift in meaning at these spaces in both cities. Poznań’s Zamek cesarski, a palace first commissioned by German Kaiser Wilhelm II, became, with its dedication in 1910, a monument to Prussian-German imperialism in this multi- ethnic Polish-German-Jewish city. Rededicated by the new Polish republic after World War I, the structure was later remodeled by the Nazis for Hitler’s use. One of their most prominent additions is still visible today: the Führerbalkon, a balcony extending off the front of the building for Hitler to watch military parades.

Jupiter's Legacy: The Symbol of the Eagle and Thunderbolt in Antiquity and Their Appropriation by Revolutionary America and Nazi Germany Siddhartha Hayes GRST 360-04 Senior Thesis Introduction The thunderbolt and the eagle, the armament and armour-bearer of Jupiter – these symbols had profound cultural significance to the ancients. At first one may think that what was sacred for the Romans has no bearing on modern society, but in truth these icons retain much of their meaning and importance even over two-thousand years later. The Western world has been obsessed with and reverent towards ancient Rome since its fall, and consequently, many different groups have associated themselves with the Latin city and its people, holding aloft its ideas and culture in an attempt to take up the legacy of the “best and greatest” power.
