Restrictions on use This collection is open for copying to the people recorded on the tapes, their relatives, Aboriginal communities in and around the places where the tapes were recorded, speakers of the languages recorded on the tapes, and Aboriginal cultural centres in and around the places where the tapes were recorded. All other clients may only copy this collection with the permission of Susan Upton. Permission must be sought from Susan Upton and the relevant Indigenous individual, family or community. Any publication or quotation must be consistent with the Copyright Act (1968). SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE Date: 1972 Extent: 18 sound tape reels (ca. 1 hr. each) : analogue, 3 ¾ ips, mono + field tape report sheets Production history These recordings were collected by Janet Mathews between the 10th and 16th of April 1972 in Coonamble, Lightning Ridge, Weilmoringle and Brewarrina. They document various languages spoken in western New South Wales, including Wailwan, Yuwaalaraay, Guwamu and Muruwari, as spoken by Bill Davis, Fred Reece, Robin Campbell and Daisy Brown. The recordings also feature an oral history interview in English with Jimmie Barker. RELATED MATERIAL John Giacon has prepared partial transcripts of field tapes 104 - 112, copies of which are held by the AIATSIS Audiovisual Archive. Linguistic Typology 2016; 20(1): 25–80 Dana Louagie and Jean-Christophe Verstraete Noun phrase constituency in Australian languages: A typological study DOI 10.1515/lingty-2016-0002 Received July 14, 2015; revised December 17, 2015 Abstract: This article examines whether Australian languages generally lack clear noun phrase structures, as has sometimes been argued in the literature. We break up the notion of NP constituency into a set of concrete typological parameters, and analyse these across a sample of 100 languages, representing a significant portion of diversity on the Australian continent. We show that there is little evidence to support general ideas about the absence of NP structures, and we argue that it makes more sense to typologize languages on the basis of where and how they allow “classic” NP construal, and how this fits into the broader range of construals in the nominal domain. The Theft of Culture and Inauthentic Art and Craft: Australian Consumer Law and Indigenous Intellectual Property Stephanie Parkin LLB Submitted in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Philosophy School of Law Faculty of Law Queensland University of Technology 2020 1 Abstract This thesis focuses on the 2017 House of Representatives Standing Committee (2017 Inquiry Committee) on Indigenous Affairs Parliamentary Inquiry into the ‘growing presence of inauthentic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ‘style’ art and craft products and merchandise for sale across Australia’. In particular, this thesis explores and gives priority to the evidence submitted by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants to the Inquiry (2017 Inquiry). In doing so, this thesis investigates a number of relevant fields of intellectual property law including copyright law and trade mark law and gives particular focus to the Australian Consumer Law (ACL). Such analysis considers and answers the research question: ‘How can the law protect Aboriginal cultural expression from exploitation?’ The geographical focus of this thesis is limited to Australia and reference to ‘2017 Inquiry’ is a reference to the above titled inquiry. Inauthentic Art and Craft has existed in the Australian marketplace for decades. The elements of Inauthentic Art and Craft consists of souvenir products that have the visual appearance of being in Aboriginal ‘style’, however they are entirely manufactured and sold without the consent or involvement of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. Over the years, Australian Courts have looked at the issue of the infringement of Aboriginal artworks and Inauthentic Art and Craft from an intellectual property law and consumer law perspective. -

B U Sebastian Moody &c. S PROJECTS B U ‘The View’ is a suite of conceptual paintings by Sebastian Moody. The paintings are meditations on the idea of perspective, considering this as an act that occurs simultaneously-internally and externally. Simply, the works are “thinking about looking” or “looking at thinking”. Moody’s practice is concerned with how our values and ideas are constructed. In equal parts gravitas and humour, his art is most often presented through public text works, relational performances, and painting. His well known large-scale public text works have appeared in swimming pools, vehicular underpasses, and building walls; elsewhere, Moody’s works have appeared in a diversity of public and private locations creating personals ads, market research campaigns, kitchen splashbacks, coffee cup ‘interventions’, pop- up bars, focus groups, hang gliders at music festivals, shopping receipt ‘portraits’. Moody lives and works in Brisbane where he has completed a Master of Museum Studies at The University of Queensland (2009) and a Bachelor Gallery Director: Channon Goodwin Sebastian Moody of Visual Arts at the Queensland University of Design: Adam Cruickshank The View Technology (2001). Queensland Music's Night of Nights at the Royal
May 14, 2018 Queensland music’s night of nights at the Royal ICC The state’s best music artists and rising stars will be recognised at the Queensland Music Awards at the Royal International Convention Centre (Royal ICC) tonight. Already an ARIA award-winner, popular Gold Coast singer Amy Shark is leading the way alongside Brisbane band The Jungle Giants with three nominations each – Amy in the pop, regional and singer/songwriter categories and The Jungle Giants in the pop, video and Album of the Year sections. With 23 awards up for grabs, the Queensland Music Awards, run by QMusic, are expected to attract more than 600 music industry identities and fans tonight. The prestigious awards have been running since 2006 and with industry heavyweights including Petrina Convey from Sony Music on the judging panel, they’ve kick-started the careers of many well-known artists including Emma Louise, best known for her song ‘My Head is a Jungle.’ Brisbane Showgrounds General Manager of Venue Sales and Marketing Jago Coyle said it was the first time the Queensland Music Awards had been held at the Royal ICC. “The Brisbane Showgrounds is the perfect venue fit – it has been home to some of the most popular music festivals including Livid, Soundwave, Stereosonic and Laneway for years,” he said. “We’re thrilled to host this event, as it celebrates Queensland music and supports artists and music fans across the state.” The Queensland Music Awards get underway at 6pm.
