  • The Role of the Winger – from the Numbers to the Training Ground 2014-2015
NORWEGIAN FOOTBALL F EDERATION UEFA A LICENCE THE ROLE OF THE WINGER - FROM THE NUMBERS TO THE TRAINING GROUND HUGO CARLOS PEREIRA O S L O , 2 0 1 4 - 2 0 1 5 Summary There is a different level of reflection that arises from the study of the numbers. As the football game structure becomes clearer and more defined in a theoretical point of view (will we ever understand its complexity?), the quest for the algorithms that could give us a better control over the outcome becomes more intense. The Norwegian Centre of Football Excellence has been working in the report Kompetansekrav i Rolle. Such report has been providing the clubs and coaches’ with an insight on top team and top players performances in the most high rated football competitions (Champions League, World Cup and European Championship). A large amount of match videos have been analyzed, discussed and dissected into the most pragmatic information possible. In Kompetansekrav i Rolle a vast and multi-faceted set of resources and references are integrated in an overview of each player position on the pitch, their role definition and specific competence. We decided to have the winger as the object of our study and analysis. The wingers are a cultural trait in Portuguese football. There are some characteristics in the role of the winger that provide that immediate rush of emotion when they are in the center of the game, reason why the role of the winger is one of the most exciting objects of study that we can choose in the modern football context.

  • Beitar and Beyond: the United Arab Emirates and Qatar’S Use of Football As Soft Power
POLICY OUTLOOK POLICY OUTLOOK DISCUSSION PAPER Beitar and Beyond: The United Arab Emirates and Qatar’s use of Football as Soft Power Anna Murphy (Howard Walker - Anadolu Agency) In 2008, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family, formed the City Football Group as a branch of the private investment and development company known as the Abu Dhabi United Group to facilitate the purchase of English football team Manchester City F.C.. In 2012, Qatar Sports Investments, a subsidiary of the Qatar sovereign wealth fund, purchased the French team Paris Saint-Germain. In the decade since these acquisitions, Manchester City and PSG have become fascinating and lucrative examples of soft power for the two Gulf states. In September of 2020, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, a lesser-known member of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family, purchased a 50 per cent stake in Beitar Jerusalem F.C, an Israeli football team. This investment has shed light on the shifting economic relations between Israel and the UAE and highlighted the unique influence of football in Israeli politics. This policy outlook examines the UAE and Qatar’s investment in football clubs in Europe and Israel as two distinct and developing modes of soft power. The opinions expressed in this policy outlook represent the views of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the TRT World Research Centre. POLICY OUTLOOK been granted greater recent attention concerning both the Background UAE’s involvement in the war in Yemen and Qatar’s treat- The team that currently sits atop the English Premier ment of workers involved in the preparation for the 2022 League, Manchester City, has been lauded as one of the World Cup.

GIANLUCA VIALLI Gianluca Vialli was born in Cremona, on July 9, 1964. An icon of Italian football in the 1980s and 1990s, he played for the "Azzurri" at the 1986 and 1990 World Cups. He also led Sampdoria to the victory of the first and only “Scudetto” in the club history, in the season 1990-91. In 1996, after having captained Juventus to the Champions League title, he moved to London, where he joined Chelsea. The following season, he was named player-manager and remained in charge until September 2000. He then spent a season managing Watford, Elton John's club, in the Championship. He is considered one of the best Italian strikers in history and is one of only nine players to have won all three major international club competitions and is also a published author. Today he works as a television analyst for Sky Italia, headlining their Champions League and Serie A coverage alongside Paolo Rossi. He is also active with his foundation, the Fondazione Vialli e Mauro, which aims to raise funds for research into cancer and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Gianluca Vialli Playing career in Italy Vialli made his debut in May of 1981, with Cremonese, his local team. In his first season he helped win promotion to Serie B and, a year later, played a key role in helping Cremonese reach Serie A for the first time in their history. The following summer he moved to Sampdoria, for whom he made his debut on September 16, against none other than Cremonese. With Sampdoria, he was Serie A's top goalscorer in 1990-91, the year the club won their first and only Italian championship.
