(signature) 2 Abstract in English: This study follows the trail of Boudica from her rediscovery in Classical texts by the humanist scholars of the fifteenth century to her didactic and nationalist representations by Italian, English, Welsh and Scottish historians such as Polydore Virgil, Hector Boece, Humphrey Llwyd, Raphael Holinshed, John Stow, William Camden, John Speed and Edmund Bolton. In the literary domain her story was appropriated under Elizabeth I and James I by poets and playwrights who included James Aske, Edmund Spenser, Ben Jonson, William Shakespeare, A. Gent and John Fletcher. As a political, religious and military figure in the middle of the first century AD this Celtic and regional queen of Norfolk is placed at the beginning of British history. In a gesture of revenge and despair she had united a great number of British tribes and opposed the Roman Empire in a tragic effort to obtain liberty for her family and her people. -

The Moral Basis of Family Relationships in the plays of Shakespeare and his Contemporaries: a Study in Renaissance Ideas. A submission for the degree of doctor of philosophy by Stephen David Collins. The Department of History of The University of York. June, 2016. ABSTRACT. Families transact their relationships in a number of ways. Alongside and in tension with the emotional and practical dealings of family life are factors of an essentially moral nature such as loyalty, gratitude, obedience, and altruism. Morality depends on ideas about how one should behave, so that, for example, deciding whether or not to save a brother's life by going to bed with his judge involves an ethical accountancy drawing on ideas of right and wrong. It is such ideas that are the focus of this study. It seeks to recover some of ethical assumptions which were in circulation in early modern England and which inform the plays of the period. A number of plays which dramatise family relationships are analysed from the imagined perspectives of original audiences whose intellectual and moral worlds are explored through specific dramatic situations. Plays are discussed as far as possible in terms of their language and plots, rather than of character, and the study is eclectic in its use of sources, though drawing largely on the extensive didactic and polemical writing on the family surviving from the period. Three aspects of family relationships are discussed: first, the shifting one between parents and children, second, that between siblings, and, third, one version of marriage, that of the remarriage of the bereaved. -
A Welsh Classical Dictionary
A WELSH CLASSICAL DICTIONARY DACHUN, saint of Bodmin. See s.n. Credan. He has been wrongly identified with an Irish saint Dagan in LBS II.281, 285. G.H.Doble seems to have been misled in the same way (The Saints of Cornwall, IV. 156). DAGAN or DANOG, abbot of Llancarfan. He appears as Danoc in one of the ‘Llancarfan Charters’ appended to the Life of St.Cadog (§62 in VSB p.130). Here he is a clerical witness with Sulien (presumably abbot) and king Morgan [ab Athrwys]. He appears as abbot of Llancarfan in five charters in the Book of Llandaf, where he is called Danoc abbas Carbani Uallis (BLD 179c), and Dagan(us) abbas Carbani Uallis (BLD 158, 175, 186b, 195). In these five charters he is contemporary with bishop Berthwyn and Ithel ap Morgan, king of Glywysing. He succeeded Sulien as abbot and was succeeded by Paul. See Trans.Cym., 1948 pp.291-2, (but ignore the dates), and compare Wendy Davies, LlCh p.55 where Danog and Dagan are distinguished. Wendy Davies dates the BLD charters c.A.D.722 to 740 (ibid., pp.102 - 114). DALLDAF ail CUNIN COF. (Legendary). He is included in the tale of ‘Culhwch and Olwen’ as one of the warriors of Arthur's Court: Dalldaf eil Kimin Cof (WM 460, RM 106). In a triad (TYP no.73) he is called Dalldaf eil Cunyn Cof, one of the ‘Three Peers’ of Arthur's Court. In another triad (TYP no.41) we are told that Fferlas (Grey Fetlock), the horse of Dalldaf eil Cunin Cof, was one of the ‘Three Lovers' Horses’ (or perhaps ‘Beloved Horses’). -

But many readers express an interest in the unusual naming of Merry Brandybuck. This is a brief outline of some of the Celtic background to his unusual name 'Meriadoc'. I have quoted directly where this is necessary, and indicated this with quotation marks. The Encyclopaedia Britannica provides some information regarding real lords bearing the name Conan: Celts from Britain fled from the invading Saxons in the 5th and 6th centuries. Brittany in France was known as Armorica before this influx of Celts from Britain. Celtic Brittany divided into several petty lordships. The Merovingian and Capetian Frankish dynasties tried to impose over-lordship but were resisted. In the 10th century Conan of Rennes became overlord. His line ended in 12th century after long struggle against Breton feudal lords. -

Shakespeare's Reclamation of the Leir Story
47 King of Legend, King of History: Shakespeare’s Reclamation of the Leir Story Graham Osborne West Chester University he earliest historical accounts of the origins of Britain, those penned by Gildas (ca. 540) and Bede (ca. 731), begin T with the Roman conquest of the British Isles by Julius Caesar, implying that Britain prior to Roman occupation is unknowable. It is not until Geoffrey of Monmouth’s publication of Historia Regum Britanniae (ca. 1136) that the people of Medieval England gain a national narrative predating Caesar’s arrival upon British shores. Geoffrey’s story, known as the Galfridian account, claims to have been translated from an ancient text and reckons the history of Britain all the way back to Brutus, grandson of Trojan Aeneas. In its time, it was accepted as history, but by the British Renaissance, historians had all but abandoned the Galfridian tradition of British antiquity as imaginative non-history. As many of Geoffrey’s kings had become the subject of history plays by that time, their loss of historicity threatened the future for stage adaptations of the stories of Gorboduc, Locrine, Leir, and others. However, King Leir is rescued from being lost to the annals of forged history and re-popularized by William Shakespeare in his play The Tragedy of King Lear. While other playwrights adapting tales from Historia held tight to the Galfridian tradition of history, Shakespeare abandoned its trappings to write his Lear, thus situating its themes on a timeless foundation of an interweaving national narrative pointing toward the country’s new monarch and a unified future determined by action rather than fate. -
