No.1 pp. 55–77 Copyright © 1999 SAGE Publications London Thousand Oaks New Delhi RE-ENTERING ELECTORAL POLITICS Reputation and Party System Change in Spain and Greece Kerstin Hamann and Barbara Sgouraki-Kinsey ABSTRACT This article examines change in the Greek and Spanish party systems between their pre- and post-authoritarian periods. While the Greek party system displayed substantial continuity, the Spanish system showed considerable change. We connect continuity in party structure with length of interruption of competitive electoral politics. Our argument relies on the idea of reputation to explain why Spanish party leaders were far less constrained in moving their parties along the policy space than their Greek counterparts. Political parties in Spain had less reputation for established policy positions than Greek parties. Our argument and its implications are formally derived from a model developed by Bowler. We evaluate some alternative explanations and conclude that reputation is a factor accounting for variation in party system change in these two cases. At the time of the transition party leaders were presented with different opportunities to redefine their respective parties’ policy positions.     Foreign correspondents in Francoist Spain (1945-1975) Tobias Reckling This thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Portsmouth. March 2016 1 Abstract This thesis will examine the foreign press corps in Francoist Spain from 1945 until 1975. After the end of the Second World War, the Franco regime was internationally isolated as a result of its ties with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. However, the dictatorship returned to the international stage during the 1950s and managed to survive on the margins of the Cold War world order until the death of Franco in 1975. Throughout these 30 years and while never loosening its dictatorial control over Spain, the Franco regime continuously tried to improve its international position and image beyond mere toleration. Foreign correspondents were working at the centre of this balancing act. Against this backdrop, this thesis has two central aims. First, it will examine the regime’s policy towards the foreign press. The thesis will show that the Francoist authorities never fully accepted the foreign press corps’ work within Spain and tried to exercise control over the foreign press corps until the end of the regime. Throughout the regime’s internal and external development, however, the Francoist authorities adapted the means they employed. At the same time, conflicting interests and strategies within the Franco regime shaped its policy towards the foreign press. This thesis will further show that conflicts with correspondents partially had their roots in the importance of the foreign press, distributed within Spain, for the Spanish public in general and the political opposition in particular.

In contemporary times, Spain experienced a cruel Civil War (1936-39) and a long period of dictatorship under General Franco’s rule (1939-75). At the death of the dictator, the opposition mobilized around left-right cleavages as well as around several territorially- based nationalist movements that had been repressed by Francoism. The moment of constitutional transition, which would last from 1977 to 1979, arose from an alliance between moderate reform factions in the elites of the old dictatorship, supported by the new King, with opposition elites. Moreover, it covers the media’s impact on the administrating elite who are also subject to the crisis. Th e research questions concern the nature of the interactions among the tri- fecta of political actors, the media and public opinion. Th e fundamental question is to what extent the crisis of political elites is a result of systemic dysfunction (a so called de-democratisation of political life) or an eff ect of the media’s activities, which have disclosed and publicised some of the dysfunctions of the above elites1. Th is article will attempt to verify the hypothesis of the aforementioned de-democratisation process in Spain, the extent of the media presence in political life, and the mediatisation of their politics. 1 More correct version of a question should ask to what extent and which media contributed to the crisis of the elites? It is quite evident in Spain which media support a particular party. José Ramón Montero is Professor of Political Science at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and at the Center for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences, Juan March Institute, Madrid. - 1 - Introduction* When Lipset and Rokkan planned Party Systems and Voter Alignments, one of us wrote a chapter on “The Party System of Spain, Past and Future” (Linz 1967). At that time Spain was an authoritarian regime with a single party, and the emergence of a competitive party system was merely a hope for the future. Ten years later, the first free election was held on June 15 1977, over 40 years after the last democratic consultation under the Republic in 1936. Since 1977, dozens of elections have been held for the two chambers of the Cortes, the 17 parliaments of the autonomous communities, over 8,000 town councils and the European Parliament. In contrast with the elections held under the liberal Restoration monarchy and those of the Second Republic, these recent ballots have proceeded with complete normality, and in some cases have proved typically dull. Nevertheless, they are no less significant for that. At the political level, elections have played a vital role in the consolidation of democracy: they have served to ratify the new Constitution, reaffirm the legitimacy of the new regime after the failed coup attempt in 1981, change the party in government on two occasions, replace the administrations of all the local councils, construct the complex Estado de las Autonomías, as well as to allow Spain to participate in European politics through its own elected representatives in the European Parliament.

Ashton 2009 Abstract This investigation serves to demonstrate the multifaceted connection that the sport of fútbol has with certain aspects of Spanish society, namely, this cultural phenomenon’s long relationship with Spanish politics, literature and film. Since the formation of Spain’s very first club teams, the sport of fútbol has always demonstrated a strong connection with Spain’s historical socio-political disputes. These disputes have become essential elements in making up the very fabric of Spain and range from questions of nationhood, to questions of identity, culture, politics, ideologies and economy. Throughout this study, I address the dispute that has been taking place between the intellectual classes and the fútboling community and defend that although the relationship between intellectuals and fútbol has not been as public as fútbol’s relationship to politics, it has however existed throughout the entire history of the sport. Many intellectuals have deemed the sport of fútbol as an unsuitable topic for intellectual areas such as literature and artistic mediums like film. In this study, I uncover that some of Spain’s most highly praised literary figures had a passion for the sport which they alluded to, sometimes on numerous occasions, as central themes in their work.
