The Collect of the Day O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfort- less, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

The Lessons The people sit. The First Lesson Acts 1:15-17, 21-26 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred twenty persons) and said, "Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrest- ed Jesus-- for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us -- one of these become a witness with us to his resurrection." So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place." And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.

Psalm 1 Chant: John Goss

The 1 John 5:9-13 If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believ- ing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Sequence Hymn The Hymnal 1982, #382 King of glory, King of peace General Seminary

The John 17:6-19 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Looking up to heaven, Jesus prayed, "I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glori- fied in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth."

Grace Church Pentecost Pinwheel Garden - May 27: On the first Pen- tecost after Easter Day, the promised Holy Spirit appears to the disciples and the Christian Church was birthed. Jesus promised that this holy pres- ence would be our Advocate. There are many ways that Western Churches observe this day. This year, we will observe it in two ways. The first is by wearing red to remember the flame of love that continues to burn in each of us even today. The second is by remembering someone who comforted us in a time of need or was an advocate for us with our Pentecost Pin- wheel Garden. Pinwheels are moved by the wind blowing through them. We are moved by the Holy Spirit, blowing through us. Please join your friends and family at Grace Church by participating in the Grace Church Pinwheel Garden. Your donation in thanksgiving for an advocate in your life “buys” a pin- wheel for the Garden in our courtyard and their names will be read at our Pentecost service. The Garden will be blessed on Sunday May 27, after our 10:30 service, followed by refreshments in the Common Room.

Please fill in the enclosed form and return it to the church office, along with your donation, via mail, the offering plate, or in person. Please get your request in by this Wednesday, May 23rd to be included in the cere- mony.

Gordon E. Grady September 11, 1917 - May 10, 2012

Our beloved Gordon Grady died on May 10th. He will be missed by all of us at Grace Church.

Gordon was a faithful member of our commu- nity, serving it with dignity and grace. As stew- ard of our friendships, he was present to many of us when we needed advice, prayer or com- fort. As steward of our endowment, he paid attention to its growth so we could pay atten- tion to our mission. As steward of the rights of all people, Gordon represented us at the Epis- copal City Mission, engaging in its work for justice and peace.

Gordon was a seeker of knowledge and of truth. Not only did he have advanced degrees from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College and the University of Pennsylvania, he was a lifelong learner, constantly reading and discussing new topics with others. But more than knowledge, Gordon pursued the truth; the truth that is found in the knowledge and love of God. Gordon didn’t hoard this knowledge and wisdom. He shared it with others, by teaching high school and college students, and by show- ing us what he had learned as a disciple of Christ.

Gordon was faithful to his baptismal promises. He fully participated in the life of the parish. He asked for and offered forgiveness. He respected all people. He worked for justice. He served others and was faithful. Gordon was a perfect example of how an imperfect human being lives a life in God.

We will celebrate Gordon’s life with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist to be held at Grace Church on Saturday, June 16th at 11:00 am. The commit- tal will take place at Puritan Lawn Cemetery, West Peabody immediately following the service. A collation shall then be held in Abbot Hall.

Please keep Pauline; Gordon’s children, Gloria, Paula and Gordon, and all of his family in your prayers, as we give thanks to God for the life of this wonderful friend.
