3 LITURGY CORNER: Easter Vigil Mass & We now reach the conclusion of this bulletin series on the liturgy of Holy Saturday. After the blessing of the font (and baptism of catechumens, if there are any), the Litany of the Saints is sung, during which the ministers briefly lie prostrate on the altar steps before going to the to change into white Mass . The meanwhile prepare the sanctuary for Mass, by lighting the altar candles (from the Easter candle) and removing the violet altar frontal and putting out the flowers and relics.

The Mass of Holy Saturday has several peculiarities, and is notable for various omissions. There is no (entrance antiphon), as everyone is already present; the clergy come to the altar as the choir sings the final at the end of the Litany. During the Gloria, the bells are rung for the first time since Holy Thursday and the images, veiled since the start of , are uncovered. The , banished since , makes its return after the , when the celebrant intones it three times, on a progressively higher note (repeated by the choir), but then it is followed by one final —the last Tract of . At the , the thurifer brings as usual (representing the spices the holy women prepared to anoint the Lord’s corpse), but the usual candles are not carried (since they did not have the light of faith in the Resurrection, which is not yet manifested to them). The Creed, recited on all feasts of the Lord, is not sung on Holy Saturday; and there also is no antiphon. As on Holy Thursday, the normally exchanged by the clergy at solemn Mass is omitted on Holy Saturday. The reason, however, is not the same on both occasions. On Holy Thursday, the day on which Judas betrayed his Master with a kiss, the rite of peace is omitted because the Church recoils with horror from using this gesture of friendship which Judas used as the sign of his treachery. On Holy Saturday, the kiss of peace is not given because Our Lord had not yet appeared to His Apostles to give them His peace, something which He did only on the afternoon of Easter Sunday (cf. John 20:19). Indeed, at the Easter Vigil, even the very singing of the is omitted (because of its verse, dona nobis pacem, “grant us peace”), another sign that the Mass of Holy Saturday is not fully a true “First Mass of Easter,” but rather a Mass that anticipates and watches for Easter. The Easter Vigil ceremony having started after the mid-afternoon office of None, by the time Mass is ending at the conclusion of this long service, the usual interval between None and Vespers has already been exceeded. Consequently, a form of “mini-Vespers” is added to Mass as the conclusion of the service in place of the usual Communion antiphon. Instead of the usual five psalms of Vespers, only one psalm is sung (Psalm 116, the shortest in the entire Psalter) and then the Magnificat, during which the altar is incensed as usual during solemn Vespers. The sung at the end of Vespers doubles as the of the Mass. This Collect Spiritum nobis will be used again as the Postcommunion on Easter Sunday, suggesting that these two Masses are two integral parts of one celebration: the anticipation and watch for the Lord’s Resurrection, and then its manifestation. This same oration will also be used throughout as the prayer in honor of the Blessed Sacrament, for example when communion is given outside of Mass. At the of the Easter Vigil Mass, a double Alleluia is added to the Ite missa est, a custom which will be kept up throughout the octave, till Low Saturday.

4 UPCOMING PROJECT AT THE ORATORY!

Dear Faithful,

As you know, for some time now we have needed to address the tuck-pointing of the church exterior. It is important for us to proceed with this project, and work will be done after Easter, once the good weather is here for good, commencing with the lower portions. This phase will cost just over $30,000. As many of you have noted, the addition of a church hall is an also important goal for the growth of our community, in terms of providing a space for multiple catechism classes and for social functions. Recently we had an initial meeting with an architect to address feasibility. I entrust this intention to your prayers.

In the meantime, before we can address our more long-term fundraising goals, we are asking those of you who are able to do so to consider a sacrificial Lenten offering to help with the tuck-pointing project. We have a providential opportunity through a potential matching fund offered by some members of the Oratory up to Easter Sunday. In order to take advantage of these matching dollars, please indicate on your donation that it is earmarked for the “Tuck Pointing Matching Fund.” Thank you very much to those who have already contributed. Whether or not you are able to offer extra material support for this project, please do continue to entrust the material and spiritual needs of the Oratory to the great Saint Joseph, and please know how much good has been accomplished through your dedication over the years.

With the assurance of my prayers for all of you at the approach of Holy Week, Canon Altiere.
