Since then these tales have exercised a pro- found influence on children and adults alike throughout the western world. Indeed, whatever form fairy tales in general have taken since the original publication of the Grimms' nar- ratives in 1812, the Brothers Grimm have been continually looking over our shoulders and making their presence felt. For most people this has not been so disturbing. However, during the last 15 years there has been a growing radical trend to over- throw the Grimms' benevolent rule in fairy-tale land by writers who believe that the Grimms' stories contribute to the creation of a false consciousness and reinforce an authoritarian sociali- zation process. Johann Eckert jest tak bardzo zafascynowany postacią młodego Wessela, studenta prawa w Berlinie oraz autora tekstu hymnu partyjnego NSDAP, że w sierpniu 1933 roku w Zabrzu bierze czynny udział w postawieniu ogromnego 30­‍tonowego głazu narzutowego z tablicą pamiątkową na cześć Horsta Wessela — sutenera, miłośnika prostytutek, jak mówili o nim jego przeciwnicy. Plac, na którym stał pomnik, został nazwany w 1939 roku również jego imieniem, dopiero po wojnie przemianowano go na plac Słowiański. Imię, które Janosch uważa za „niezniszczalną obrazę”1, pozostało na zawsze, a po obelisku nie ma już śladu, według lokalnej legendy nie został on bowiem w 1945 roku ani wywieziony, ani zniszczony, lecz z uwagi na swe gabaryty prawdopodobnie strącono go w głęboki dół wykopany pod nim2.
