TALK “Everywhere I went, my friends coaches would be asking me to come out for their team. My mom always said no.” Hillery called Boyd’s mom to try and change her mind. “I talked to his mom,” he said, “and she was not OK FOOTBALL!! with him playing football. But she said he is now a grown man and can make his own decisions.” And so, Boyd immediately made the decision to play. “I’m having a lot of fun,” Boyd said. “Right now I’m play- ing defense and I love it. It’s easier than playing offense. I don’t know the plays on offense yet.” Boyd’s grandmother, Rita Donaldson, has been a huge support for this process. “She drives Jermaine to practice and she stays for the whole practice,” Hillery said. “She asks me what we need her to do to toughen him up.” Boyd says that his grandma screams at him during practice. “When we run laps,” he said, “she’ll scream out ‘Pick it up, Jermaine’. She’s always encouraging me.” Ms. Donaldson, says she does indeed encourage Jermaine over the objections of her daughter. “What we have in store for our children,” Donaldson said, “is not necessarily what they have in store for them- selves. They have to find their own way.” Besides, Donaldson has experience with a child that plays football. Another one of her daughters, Markita Quarles, plays Professional Women’s Football in . “Markita is Jermaine’s Aunt,” Donaldson said, “and she still plays for the Carolina Queens. She’s also a model and Be sure to LISTEN Saturday Morning from 10 to 11!! a personal trainer in North Carolina.” Boyd says he’s not mad at his mom for refusing to allow him to play all these years. “I understand she didn’t want me to get hurt,” he said, “but you can get hurt crossing the street.” So far, things are going reasonably well. “Jermaine is athletic,” Hillery said. “In fact, he’s very ath- letic. He can move and he can run a mile in under 10 min- utes. He’s a lot faster than most kids his size.” And he does have size... a LOT of it. “We went to the ECC Camp this summer,” Hillery said. “Some kid from the other team was trying to block him and couldn’t do it. Finally, the kid looked at his coach and said, ‘That kid is big as hell times two!’ So they tried to double- team him and couldn’t do that either.” Hillery says that he and Boyd are going to be doing a lot of learning together this season.

“He still needs to learn how to be a football player,” Tony Caligiuri Sean Bruso Mike Ferrentino Roger Weiss Hillery said, “but his character is top notch. He’s a very humble kid and he works hard. I have high hopes for him.” (716) 803-0550 25 Team Reports

59 It’s not the critic who counts.

Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.

The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again...

...who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt FootballWeeklyUpstate Are You Game?
