Hello, I hope your summer has started out wonderfully! Thank you for your support of Welcome Home Angel and our mission of bringing joy and relief to children with life altering injuries or illnesses. Here at Welcome Home Angel, we want to do a better job at keeping our amazing supporters up to date on our happenings. We currently have five open cases and several on the waiting list. If you'd like to receive an electronic newsletter with updates for completed projects, please visit our site at www.welcomehomeangel.com and click the "Newsletter" tab at the top. Our website has completed projects listed with descriptions and pictures. Also, we provide frequent updates through our Facebook. Please take the time to give us a "like" if you are interested. Here is a quick look into the most recently completed project! Brandon was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a cancerous blood condition, which leads to inadequate production of blood forming cells. In order to prevent the progression of MDS to acute myeloid leukemia (AML), Brandon underwent a bone marrow transplant last summer. There are almost always complications that arise from bone marrow transplants and that has been true in Brandon’s progress. He has had multiple infections and has developed a condition that makes it difficult for him to get the appropriate levels of oxygen to his body. Brandon lives with his mother and two older siblings. He is in love with WWE and that served as the inspiration for his room makeover. We were extremely fortunate to have Meg Caswell working with us as the designer for Brandon’s project. Meg was the winner of season six of HGTV’s Design Star which led to 18 episodes of her own design show on the network. She has been generous in giving of her time and finding individuals and businesses to donate. One word to sum up Brandon’s reaction to his room… priceless. He was in a state of ultimate joy and shock. Welcome to HighNotes, brought to you by the Evanston Symphony for the senior members of our community who must of necessity isolate more because of COVID-!9. The current pandemic has also affected all of us here at the ESO, and we understand full well the frustration of not being able to celebrate holidays with family or make music with friends or go holiday-shopping in a real store. We certainly miss performing for our loyal audiences, especially this month when we would have had our annual festive Holiday Concert Musical Notes and Activities for Seniors at ETHS with perennial favorites like “Sleigh Ride,” ballet selections from the Evanston Symphony Orchestra from The Nutcracker, the ESO Holiday Concert Gospel Choir led by the Reverend Ken Cherry - and maybe even tap-dancing reindeer! However, since we can’t invite you to an in-person concert this Holidays of Light! 2 year, we’ll present one to you in these pages and in links to videos and recordings that show off the orchestra and the music. Vampire Hunters: the Scheduling and Reception of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel in the UK Annette Hill and Ian Calcutt Introduction In a viewers’ feedback programme on TV, a senior executive responded to public criticism of UK television’s scheduling and censorship of imported cult TV. Key examples included Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin off series Angel. The executive stated: ‘The problem is, with some of the series we acquire from the States, in the States they go out at eight o’clock or nine o’clock. We don’t have that option here because we want to be showing history documentaries or some other more serious programming at eight or nine o’clock’ [1]. TV channels in the UK do not perceive programmes like Buffy and Angel, which have garnered critical and ratings success in the USA, appropriate for a similarly prominent timeslot. Although peak time programmes can include entertainment shows, these are generally UK productions, such as lifestyle or drama. This article analyses the circumstances within which British viewers are able to see Buffy and Angel, and the implications of those circumstances for their experiences as audience members and fans. The article is in two sections. The first section outlines the British TV system in general, and the different missions and purposes of relevant TV channels. It also addresses the specifics of scheduling Buffy and Angel, including the role of censorship and editing of episodes. We highlight how the scheduling has been erratic, which both interrupts complex story arcs and frustrates fans expecting to see their favourite show at a regular time.
