Iran, Oman, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan sign a MoU on transit After a period of discussion, the four countries signed an MoU (memorandum of understanding) for transit involving all four countries. The MoU seeks to facilitate transportation along the multi-faceted corridor stretching from Central Asia to the Persian Gulf and Oman. Based on the MoU, the four member countries are required to set up an expert working group to draw up strategies to expand transit cooperation. In the MoU it has been agreed that Turkmenistan will be the trustee country or hub for the discussions and management of the central working body. The countries agreed that once the strategy is developed by the working group, it will be handed over to Turkmenistan as the trustee country. The MoU was signed at the first meeting of the Coordination Council of Ashgabat Agreement on the establishment of an international transportation and transit corridor. Government sources say that 12 million tonnes of goods were transited via Iran in 2014, and Iran is looking forward to increase its potential as a transit provider to many countries. This MoU has created a new chapter in regional cooperation. Iran inaugurates massive floating oil storage unit in Persian Gulf Iran has inaugurated a floating storage unit (FSU) of significant size in the Persian Gulf. The FSU has a capacity to store over 2.2 million barrels of crude oil. The storage unit is 337 metres long, 60 metres wide and 33 metres high. Connected by two 16-inch pipelines, each 7 kilometres long, it will carry crude oil produced in the offshore Soroush and Norouz oilfields to the FSU. The building contractor for the project was Samsung, construction of which started in 2008. The total cost of the facility was approximately USD 300 million. It is expected that the huge storage capacity will increase Iran’s flexibility to export crude oil as well as giving a substantial increase in the capacity to store. The Oil Minister of Iran suggested that export capacities of Iran would double if the sanctions ended. At present Iran’s oil output is approximately 2.8 million barrels per day on average.
