MUNITIZ, S.J. Joseph Gili, S.J. (8 IX 1901-15 X 1989) Fr Gill’s links with the Pontifical Oriental Institute seem to have been forged in the Summer of 1934, while he was on supply in St Walburg’s Preston, immediately after fmishing his theology course: ‘I got a letter from RomI welcoming me to the Staff of the Oriental Institute, which I had never heard of before. Nor had I heard a word from the Provincial, Fr Henry Keane, So I wrote to him to ask about it, and stressed that my knowledge of Greek was minimal. He replied that it would be all right, as he understood that the stan- dards in RomI were very low!’(]) The remote preparation for this appointment began while he was a boy at Leeds Catholic College (run by the Jesuits), where he studied Latin and Greek, though on joining the Society of Jesus (7 IX 1918) he admitted, ‘I can read Latin, but though I have studied Greek, I don’t think I could read it, to be understood or at all fluently’(2). He resumed the study of Greek in 1920 and matricu- lated at London University, taking the Intermediate examination in 1921, and then fitting in the studies necessary for a B.A. (extemal pass degree in five subjects) while also studying the first two years of the Jesuit philosophy course (1923-25). His third year (1925-26) was spent at the Gregorian in RomI, his first contact with that city, and brought him a Ph. D. During theology (1929-33) he studied a little morI New Testament Greek with Fr Cuthbert Lattey, but had few illusions as to his knowledge of the Greek language. Once appointed to the Orientale, he decided to begin with the study of Modem Greek and went off to Athens (1934-36), where he taught himself (■) Interview with John Coventry for Letters and Notices (private publ., British Jesuits) 89 (1988), pp. 375-381. He retumed to London (passing through the Orientale for the first time) in 1936, and read for the BA Honours course in Latin and Greek, benefitting from the in- spired teaching of Norman Baynes and beginning a life-long friend- ship. A fellow student in those years was Joan Hussey, later Profes- sor Hussey, who became another faithful friend. Throughout all these years Gili had given constant signs of the sharp intuition and tenacity that were to prove formidable assets in his life as a scho¬ lar. Between them Gili and Baynes had agreed that he write a Ph.D. thesis on ‘the development of the Greek language in the first eight centuries, as judged by hagiographical writings’, and when Gili re¬ tumed to the Orientale and began teaching Greek in 1938, he duti- fully began work ‘on this appalling thesis which I had chosen: it was very dulT(3). Excitement was soon to be provided. Gili hap- pened to be in England when war broke out, but he madI his way back to RomI for the start of the academic year, and in 1940 pub- lished his first scholarly article, a spin-off from his doctoral work(4). In the same year, the General sent him back to England with the mission to spread news about the persecution of the Catholic Church in the Third Reich, which Gili did in collaboration with the Minis- try of Information. There followed a bewildering succession of loca- tions: teaching classics in Preston and supervising the games for the boys (‘the first XI didn’t win many matches’), joining the R.A.F. in London as a war chaplain in November, and sailing round the Cape, so that he found himself back in Greece in 1941 (5). Then six months of hair-raising adventures on the mainland and in Crete before the British forces withdrew to Egypt. Later Gili served on various home bases, being sent out to Germany only after the end of the war, ‘when things were very fluid and I didn’t manage to leam any German’ (a constant regret to him). He was demobbed in Sep- tember 1946 and retumed to the Orientale in October to pick up the shattered remnants of his academic career after six years absence. (3) Interview, 5uoted above (notI 1).     Steven Bayme Intermarriage and Jewish Leadership in the United States There is a conflict between personal interests and collective Jewish welfare. As private citizens, we seek the former; as Jewish leaders, however, our primary concern should be the latter. Jewish leadership is entrusted with strengthening the collective Jewish endeavor. The principle applies both to external questions of Jewish security and to internal questions of the content and meaning of leading a Jewish life. Countercultural Messages Two decades ago, the American Jewish Committee (AJC) adopted a “Statement on Mixed Marriage.”1 The statement was reaffirmed in 1997 and continues to represent the AJC’s view regarding Jewish communal policy on this difficult and divisive issue. The document, which is nuanced and calls for plural approaches, asserts that Jews prefer to marry other Jews and that efforts at promoting endogamy should be encouraged. Second, when a mixed marriage occurs, the best outcome is the conversion of the non-Jewish spouse, thereby transforming a mixed marriage into an endogamous one. When conversion is not possible, efforts should be directed at encouraging the couple to raise their children exclusively as Jews. All three messages are countercultural in an American society that values egalitarianism, universalism, and multiculturalism. Preferring endogamy contradicts a universalist ethos of embracing all humanity. Encouraging conversion to Judaism suggests preference for one faith over others. Advocating that children be raised exclusively as Jews goes against multicultural diversity, which proclaims that having two faiths in the home is richer than having a single one. It is becoming increasingly difficult for Jewish leaders to articulate these messages.

    Poles and Jews: The Quest For Self-Determination 1919- 1934 By Feigue Cieplinski Poland became an independent nation against all odds in the interwar period and retained her sovereignty from 1919 to 1939; hence the concept “interwar Poland.” The vicissitudes of her existence earned her the name of “God’s Playground.” [1] The Jews within her borders shared her history since 1240 C.E. Their freedoms during this period, unequaled in other places of Western Europe, earned Poland the Biblical allusion of “New Canaan.” [2] In contrast, some scholars have described Poland’s Jewry in the interwar Republic as being “On the Edge Of Destruction.” [3] That Polish Jewry was in distress is attested by the urgent visit of Mr. Neville Laski, a member of the British Joint Foreign Committee closely associated with the American Jewish Committee (AJC) and the Joint Distribution Committee, in 1934. [4] His August visit fell between two historical events framing Polish Jewry’s status: seven months before, in January of that year, Poland and Germany signed a bilateral non- aggression declaration and in September Colonel Josef Beck, as Foreign Minister, announced in Geneva, his country’s unilateral abrogation of the Minorities Treaty in force since 1919. The scholars listed below have studied separately either the birth of Poland and the imposition of the Minorities Protection Treaty, the rapprochement between Poland and Germany, or the situation of the Jews in Poland. However, they have paid scant attention to the nexus between the rise of Hitler, the rapprochement between Poland and Germany, the demise of the Minorities Protection Treaty, and the consequent worsening situation of Polish Jewry.

    The Politics of the Fifties: Jewish Leadership and the Jews of Corinth in the Time of 2 Corinthians Martin Goodman The Acts of the Apostles contain a graphic account of an attempt by the leaders of the Jewish community in Corinth to curb the activities of the apostle Paul: When Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack on Paul and brought him before the tribunal. They said, “This man is per- suading people to worship God in ways that are contrary to the law”. Just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of crime or serious villainy, I would be justified in accepting the complaint of you Jews; but since it is a matter of questions about words and names and your own law, see it to yourselves; I do not wish to be a judge of these matters”. And he dismissed them from the tribunal. Then all of them seized Sosthenes, the official of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the tribunal.1 This event, if the story is not a fictional creation by the author of Acts,2 can be dated quite precisely to the fifties ce because the period of Gallio’s tenure of the post of governor of the province of Achaia is known from an inscription.3 Whether the tensions that led the Corinthian Jews to invoke intervention by the governor were also the cause of the formal judicial punishments that Paul claimed in 2 Corinthians at around the same time to have suffered at the hands of officials of the Jewish court – ‘Five times I have received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one’4 – is not certain.

Lewis The story is told about Abraham Lincoln who was said to have challenged an interlocutor with the riddle, “If you call a tail a leg how many legs does a dog have?” “Five,” he replied. “Wrong,” said Lincoln, “simply calling a tail a leg does not make it so!” I think about this “tale” every time I contemplate the explosion of offerings in our community purporting to be about Jewish leadership. Indeed, in this post-Passover season of counting, most of us can no longer count how many such programs exist. Legacy organizations, start-ups, foundations, synagogue movements, the innovation sector, everyone, it seems, is in the business of Jewish leadership. What is far less certain, however, is what it means to create meaningful leadership programming, or, as was asked of me not too long ago by a group of extremely thoughtful young Jewish leaders, “What’s Jewish about Jewish leadership?” The vast majority of leadership programs in American Jewish life today fall into one of two broad categories. (Spoiler alert, I am an advocate for a third approach, which I will describe shortly.) The first, involves providing those who run Jewish groups with insights into effective leadership as expounded in academic literature and corporate best practices. Here, “Jewish” is a demographic term describing the mission of the organizations and the ethnic/religious background of their employees and volunteers who participate in these training programs. The second category provides those who run Jewish organizations with an intensive educational experience that focuses on what can most appropriately be referred to as Jewish literacy: history, rituals, value concepts, philosophy, and the like.

    NOTES JBU SPEECH RCA CONVENTION Jewish Leadership: the struggle for Authority and Power DATE: 6/14/93 tit^j-i n hx ^ ru -fr Introduction: Over the past five years, I have travelled the country working with Jewish organizations and Jewish communities on a variety of problems and issues - 40 project in 10 states -- ranging from care of the elderly to Jewish population studies; from plans to restructure Jewish education to strategies for outreach. -- the struggle for Authority and Power ־- Focus: Jewish leadership talk is in three parts: .Q outline what I see as the major challenges to Jewish leadership in North america; the specific role that the orthodox community can and should play in helping the overall Jewish community meet these challenges and the implications for Rabbinic leadership. SIX CHALLENGES TO JEWISH LEADERSHIP IN NORTH AMERICA 1. THE BROADER CULTURE DOES NOT SEEM TO SUPPORT OUR COMMITMENT TO JEWISH IDENTITY AND CONTINUITY • Americans are generally receptive to intermarriage with other religious and ethnic groups • The commitment to the "mosaic" of multi-culturalism seems to support black and hispanic identity, but not necessarily those of other growing ethnic groups 2. THE JEWISH COMMUNITY WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY FLUID IN ITS BOUNDARIES • The community is going to have to learn to live with large numbers of "quasi-Jews" Differences of view about "who is a Jew" exacerbate the schisms in the community • It is virtually impossible to intelligently measure the size of the Jewish community, given multiple definitions 3. THERE ARE LIKELY TO BE FEWER SELF-DEFINED JEWS IN NORTH AMERICA IN THE FUTURE • Jewish population is at or near a negative growth rate o Conversions in are balanced by conversions out o Even accounting for later marriage and child-rearing, fertility rates suggest that Jews are not reproducing themselves o Immigration is hard to predict; but not likely to substantially affect the numerical results (60,000 to 200,000 per year(?) o Many "secular" Jews are intermarried and are not raising their children as Jews ** / I 4.

For centuries, inhabitants of coastal areas have suffered from the effects of tsunamis. Turkey, with a coastline of 8333 km, has experienced many tsunamis. Historical records reveal that, during the observation period over 3000 years, the coastal and surrounding areas of Turkey have been affected by more than ninety tsunamis. These tended to cluster around the Marmara Sea, the city of Istanbul and the gulfs of Izmit, Izmir, Fethiye and Iskenderun. Each of the tsunami occurrences surveyed in this paper deserves further individual study. The most extensive available information concerns the tsunamis associated with the Istanbul Earthquakes of 1509 and 1894, the Eastern Mar- mara Earthquake in 1963 and that of Izmit in 1999, which disturbed the Marmara Sea; the Earthquake of 1939 in Erzincan in eastern Anatolia; and the 1968 Bartın Earthquake, which affected Fatsa and Amasra on the Black Sea.

Foreword A lot of attention is paid these days to innovative start-ups in the Jewish world, and much of this attention is well-deserved. The energy and creativity being unleashed are both extraordinary and critical to the present and future of Jewish life in North America and, likely, worldwide. But too often, it is similarly assumed that because established institutions are, well, established, they are not innovating internally. Frankly, that’s not the case. At the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), we spend our days engaging with congregational leaders representing the 900 congregations of the URJ, and I can tell you that there is significant innovation happening in synagogues across North America. The conventional wisdom has shifted. No longer are congregations waiting for the conveyor belt to deliver them new members. They realize that existing solely to sustain their institutions is not a long-term prospect for growth or even for survival. Instead, they now see that they must innovate, by transforming the way they create sacred community and meaningful Jewish experiences to have an impact on the participants and the world around them. More and more URJ congregations are experimenting, some of them on their own and some in partnership with other congregations. And it’s happening in congregations of all sizes and demographic profiles, all over North America. To achieve the innovation that needs to happen in congregations so they can continue to thrive, board members must be able to move beyond managing the day to day; they need to have generative conversations about the future of their congregation and increase the risks that they are willing to take.
