You may think that a poor recommendation but in fact it was because I was enjoying it so much. I wanted the enjoyment to last as long as possible, so I rationed my reading. Amanda Owen, the author, was brought up in Huddersfield but now lives even higher up in the Pennines at Ravenseat: ‘The most remote farm in Swaledale.’ She has found out a lot about the history of the farm and the dale, which makes her book a useful digest of information. Principally, however, it is a fascinatingly detailed account of her own life and the lives of her family and their animals. Many of you will no doubt have read it already. Hazel welcomed members and Eileen deputised for Jennifer as secretary. The rollcall was won by Hilda and the raffle by Audrey. Hilda and Audrey had enjoyed the centenary evening at Carperby Our entry in Reeth show came third. There will be a fund-raising church concert by Marske Choir on 3rd October at 7.30 and it was hoped that members would support this good cause. The evening continued on the theme of '100 years of crafts and cake' beginning with Mary making her famous lemon drizzle cake (she even brought her own oven.) and continuing with a multitude of wonderful craft skills demonstrated by the rest of the members. It was such an entertaining and interesting evening that we awarded ourselves 10 points each in lieu of competition entries. The next meeting will be on 27th October at 7 p.m. in Marrick Institute, when Kathryn Guy will show us how to make Christmas decorations. Visitors are always welcome. Eileen Martin
