Jamia Millia Islamia: Proforma for CV of Faculty/ Staff Members Curriculum Vitae Brief Profile: Born in a village (Chandanbara, East Champaran, Bihar) on 5th August 1964, he had his primary education from a government school in the same village. He then got his Matriculation from Maulana Azad High School, Khairawa. For the opportunity of higher education, he joined M. S. College, Motihari, his district town, from where he graduated in 1984 with Botany (Hons) and Zoology & Chemistry as subsidiary subjects. Since childhood he had keen interest in literature. Even as a student of science he used to have fascination for Urdu poetry which led him to reorient himself for Graduation in Urdu Language culminating into his accomplishment of M.A. in Urdu Literature from Patna University. During his stay for higher education in Patna, he spent his valuable time, more than a year, for Civil Services Exams with which he was not deeply associated. For pursuing Ph.D. in Urdu, he enrolled himself in a Central University Jamia Millia Islamia under the supervision of Professor Shamim Hanfi, an eminent scholar and critic of Urdu language. Meanwhile, he qualified a competition for teaching profession in Bihar, and in 1996 he joined a High School at Balour, Manigachi in Darbhanga district. But the academic environment in the school hardly impressed him and soon he returned Delhi with a noble and higher goal in mind. His sincerity and dedication finally paid him to be a lecturer in the Department of Urdu, Jamia Millia Islamia on ad-hoc basis in Oct 1997 and finally appointed as a permanent faculty on 10th August, 1998. -

6 Between Hegel and Rumi: Iqbal’s Contrapuntal Encounters with the Islamic Philosophical Traditions Sajjad Rizvi University of Exeter, United Kingdom he colonial period in British India witnessed the rise of different responses Tarticulated by religious communities to both their traditions of scriptural and vernacular knowledge systems as well as attempts to make sense of how modernity challenged their practices, modes of life, and epistemologies of the cosmos that they inhabited. In effect, all of these responses were incubated in the laboratory of imperial modernity – new political systems of governance, the new science, new epistemologies and pedagogies, print and new media, and a world opened up before them albeit within the confines of the status of imperial subjects – and perhaps in that sense it would not be incorrect to labels them all as ‘modernist’. The failure of the old elites to resist the impe- rial powers – and the ongoing issue of whether the success of the colonisers was somehow linked to their ‘muscular Protestantism’ – led to a rethinking of traditions and their refashioning in the image of the conqueror (van der Veer 2001; Viswanathan 1989; Prakash 1999). The development of the field of Islamic intellectual history in South Asia has brought out in particular five or six such responses – and captured the interest of the subject of this volume and of this chapter (for example, Muhammad Iqbal) who had a relationship in some way or the other with each of them: the return to scripturalism and in particular to the texts -

Classic Poetry Series Waheed Akhtar - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Waheed Akhtar(12 August 1934 - 13 December 1996) Syed Waheed Akhtar (Urdu: ??? ???? ???? ) was an Urdu poet, writer, critic, distinguished orator, and one of the leading Muslim scholars and philosophers of the 20th century. <b> Life </b> Waheed Akhtar was born in Aurangabad in the erstwhile Hyderabad State of Nizam (present day Maharashtra), to a family which had migrated from Nasirabad - Jais (Jais-birth place of poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi), boroughs of Sa'adat inhabitants in Raebareily (or Raebareli) district of Uttar Pradesh. His father's name was Syed Nazr-e Abbas, and mother's name was Syeda Aliya Begum. They had seven children. Waheed Akhtar was the second child, among six sons and one daughter. After spending his childhood in Aurangabad, and completing his early education, he went to Hyderabad, to enroll at Osmania University. He was in Hyderabad for eight years until he completed his Ph. D. and was appointed lecturer at Aligarh Muslim University. It is thought that his years in Hyderabad were crucial for moulding his personality as a poet and writer. Although, after police action, Hyderabad acceded to the Dominion of India, it was still a very strong feudal society, dominated by the rich and elite. At that time, it was claimed that Muslims who had held previously held positions of importance had subsequently become defeatist, thinking they had lost their voice and authority in the conditions prevalent at that time. Hyderabad was still the only University in India to teach modern sciences, including medicine and engineering, in Urdu, which was the fruit of Allamah Shibli Nomani's hardwork. -
