Welcome to the Conference on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, jointly hosted by the Massey University-based Global Centre for Indigenous Leadership and the New Zealand Human Rights Commission. In 2007, the United Nations’ General Assembly adopted the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and in 2010, the New Zealand Government took the decision to formalise its support for it. The Declaration recognises the rights of Māori and all Indigenous Peoples to self-determination, to maintain their own languages and cultures, to protect their natural environment and cultural heritage and to manage their own affairs as Indigenous Peoples. Ten years on from its adoption, this conference provides the opportunity to reflect on the Declaration’s significance and focus on its impact and relevance at the community level, alongside the Treaty of Waitangi. On behalf of the organising committee, we are honoured to host this important conference where we will consider the political, cultural, social and economic ramifications of the Declaration, significant milestones since its adoption, and its future prospects. We are hopeful that this conference will provide a strong foundation and clear pathway forward for ensuring the Declaration remains a relevant and impactful tool for future generations. -

ANNUAL REPORT 15/16 MWDI ANNUAL REPORT 15/16 FOREWORD In 1987 MWWL established the Māori Women’s Te Ropu Wahine Maori Development Fund, which in 1997 became the Māori Toko i Te Ora (“MWWL”) Women’s Development Inc to assist Māori women into business. The trustees of the Māori Women’s was established in 1951 Development Incorporation are the past and to promote activities current Presidents of MWWL. With the need to purchase property, the Trustees that would improve in 1997 established an independent entity while maintaining a constitutional requirement to report on the position of Māori, an annual basis to Māori Women’s Welfare League’s particularly women National Council at Annual General Meetings. Māori Women’s Development Inc is a development and children. and lending corporation for Māori in Aotearoa and received confirmation of its charity status on the 5th of July 2013. Maori Party Press Release 15 April 2020 Maori Party Pou Support Leadership Maori Party founders Dame Tariana Turia and Dr Sir Pita Sharples are excited by the John Tamihere- Debbie Ngarewa-Packer leadership team announced today. Dame Tariana said she was confident this new leadership would return the Maori Party to Parliament. “The hopes for many of our people sits on the shoulders of John and Debbie and I am delighted they have been appointed the co-leaders,” Dame Tariana said. The pair were confirmed at a Special General Meeting of the Maori Party National Executive. “When you are in war, like we are now, you need strong warriors. John and Debbie are warriors and in all the time I have known them, they have never been afraid to stand up for what is right,” she said. “Debbie’s mahi as an Iwi Leader is impeccable and beyond reproach. I am right behind this announcement and can’t wait to see these two in action.” Sir Pita, who beat John in 2005 to enter parliament for the Maori Party and left in 2014, echoed Dame Tariana’s korero. “As Maori, we will often offer an olive branch hoping that we can work as one,” he said. “We need John and Debbie to support the government in defending our communities from Covid- 19. “That requires the Government to work with us as well.” Former Maori Party President Dame Naida Glavish said a refreshed and rejuvenated party would play a vital role in defending the Maori community from Covid-19, as we head into winter. -

Ngā pūrākau o ngā wāhine rangatira Māori o Aotearoa The stories of Māori women leaders in New Zealand A thesis presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology Massey University Rebecca Wirihana 2012 i Whakarāpopoto: Abstract Māori women form the backbone of Māori communities and have long worked within political, health, social, legal, religious and educational community environments to enhance the status and wellbeing of Māori communities. Traditionally, Māori were seen as maintaining roles of balance, harmony, and leadership in te ao Māori (the Māori world). This study sought to explore the life experiences of Māori women leaders and how these have been influential on their roles as leaders in Māori communities. Thirteen women were identified by Māori in their communities as leaders and were interviewed using pūrākau (traditional Māori narratives) as a method for life story narrative research in kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face) interviews. Using a research analysis framework based on pūrākau and the four words which comprise its whole, pū (source), rā (light), ka (past, present, future), and ū (from within), four important research findings emerged. First, their source of leadership began from their ūkaipō (early childhood nurturing and protection) and was sustained by their connections to whakapapa (genealogy, descent) and guided by whānau (family) expectations. Second, particular experiences which led to enlightenment were important in sustaining and guiding their roles as leaders through the development of moemoeā (visions, aspirations) for their communities. -

It asks the question, are Māori language revitalisation strategies and initiatives informed by theory[ies] and mātauranga Māori? Or, are Māori language revitalisation strategies ad hoc and reactionary to an environment where native speakers are becoming fewer and the quality of the language very limited? Kaupapa Māori research ethics and principles inform the research methodology and Indigenous methodologies provide a framework from which to locate and interpret the research ensuring that the research is managed through a culturally appropriate lens. The development of an ontological data base is an outcome of this research, where relationships between the concepts and classifications in a subject area or domain pertaining to Indigenous Māori language revitalisation are examined.
