Introduction Despite having gone through a marathon 18 days full of events against all odds due to the pandemic, the glamour of the Summer Olympic Games lived on as the entire world got together in a true show of force and unity with athletes battling it out to the least shot, millimetre and point to return back home as Olympic heroes. The starting lists and medals’ table have, as in previous editions, served as an ideal platform for the traditional powerhouses in world sport to further demonstrate their dominance with a few surprises making the headlines from time to time. Ever since the inaugural edition of the Games for the Small States of Europe (GSSE) held in 1985 in San Marino, this biannual event became a benchmark for the participating countries to gauge their progress against other similar countries whose population is less than 1 million inhabitants. As per Table 1, if the same model were to be applied across the globe at Olympic level, 48 countries would fit in the bill for such a comparative exercise with Cyprus’ population, one of the founding members of the GSSE, now increasing to 1.2 million.

    Japan Self-Defense Forces’ Overseas Dispatch Operations in the 1990s: Effective International Actors? Garren Mulloy A Thesis Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Newcastle University School of Geography, Politics and Sociology 2011 Abstract Garren Mulloy This thesis investigates Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) overseas deployment operations (ODO) of the 1990s to evaluate whether the JSDF were effective international actors. This study fills a significant gap in extant literature concerning operational effectiveness, most studies having concentrated upon constitutionality and legality. This study places operational evaluations within the context of international actors during the vital decade of the 1990s, and within the broader context of Japanese security policies. JSDF performance is studied in four mission variants: UN peacekeeping, allied support, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief operations. A four-stage analytical framework is utilised, evaluating JSDF effectiveness, efficiency, and quality, comparing between missions, mission variants, and with other international actors, thereby cross-referencing evaluations and analyses. The historical development of the JSDF profoundly affected their configuration and ability to conduct operations, not least the mechanisms of civilian control, the constitution, and mediated passage of ODO-related laws. However, these factors have not prevented the development of significant JSDF ODO-capabilities, and their development is traced through the target decade, and linked to the successful completion of post-2001 operations in Iraq and East Timor. It is found that although JSDF ODO in the 1990s provided effective, quality services, operational efficiency was frequently compromised by lack of investment in key capabilities and limited scales of dispatch, despite the relative cost-effectiveness of ODO.

    Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs Dear decision makers, We, the undersigned, are hereby proclaiming our disapproval of keeping dolphins in captivity within the borders of Egypt. The existence of dolphinaria is detrimental to the welfare of dolphins and causes harm and death to them through capture, transportation, and confinement in captivity. This is true for both wild-captured and captive-born animals. Our request is based on scientific and factual evidence that keeping dolphins in captivity only benefits humans who profit from them, but has no conservation, educational or scientific value whatsoever. Governments need to be firmer in their response to these important threats to these animals and prevent dolphinaria from establishing, while also helping to educate the public, many of whom flock to dolphinaria to watch the dolphins cavorting, blissfully unaware of the suffering and death toll that such shows entail. We hereby respectfully petition you to: - PREVENT the opening of a new dolphinarium in Makadi Bay (south of Hurghada) which is supposed to open its gates soon. - DO NOT grant any further permits for the establishment of dolphinaria in the Red Sea Governorate - PASS required legislation to prohibit commercial captive display of dolphins and other marine mammals in Egypt, as another Party to ACCOBAMS, Croatia, has done.
