I am partic- ularly indebted to the people who advised and guided my first nervous footsteps. The historian Andrew Roberts was as prolific in his encouragement and advice as he is in his output of wonderful books. In addition, he introduced me to the equally eminent Paul Johnson whose broad-scope histories were a model for my own work; he gave me particularly useful advice on planning and notation.
