Stitching Tip: Flat-ornament finishing instructions – Materials: Padded mounting board (heavy mat board and iron-on fusible fleece can be substituted). Fabric-marking pencil, straight pins, and sewing machine (optional). Use a ½” seam allowance. Measure desired distance (1/8” – 1” is typical) from stitching on all sides and use marking pencil to draw a line this distance from edge of design all around, staying on grain-line of fabric when possible. Do not cut fabric. Place ornament over a piece of backing fabric (right sides together) and pin layers together along edge of stitching. Sew around ornament along drawn line, leaving bottom of ornament open. Trim all layers to seam allowances of ¼”. Trim corners to seam allowances of 1/8”. Turn ornament to right side. Using ornament as a pattern, cut mounting board. Insert mounting board into ornament and sew opening closed. Attached trim, hanger, and other embellishments, using blind stitch and matching thread. A kloster block is to Hardanger what an x is to cross stitch. It is the foundation and from there everything is built. It is mathematically correct. This year’s piece started in January but it is never too late to get started. The piece is being done on white linen with white cotton thread. It gives a delicate and clean appearance. Join us as we learn various steps in the process of making this delicate piece. Enjoy the company of fellow stitchers while learning heirloom needlework. The piece can be finished in a pillow, framing, or perhaps displayed on a table. Both #8 and #12 Perle cotton threads were used to make this beautiful Hardanger piece. Learn why it is always so important to know where the tip of the scissors are located. Sampler Class!
