Italy Botter, Venezia & Puglia Carlo Botter started Botter Family in 1928. After the Second World War, his sons, Arnaldo and Enzo, joined their father and began to introduce international sales to their Veneto-based business. Saladini Pilastri, Marche Count Saladini Pilastri’s family have been making wine for more than 1000 years. Today, this sprawling 320 hectare Marche estate produces both white and red wines. All of the wines have been certified ORGANIC, since 1994.

2016 Falerio Dei Colli Ascolani DOC $14.95 per bottle, 6 btls Organic This white blend (passerina, pecorino, and ) from Marches has a gorgeous bouquet of white flower and lilacs with a deeper yellow color to match its bolder medium-plus body. La Gironda di Galandrino, Piedmont Susanna Galandrino’s family roots run deep in Piedmont’s Asti region. That said, she and her husband only started La Gironda in 2000. Today they own 7 hectares of in Nizza, generally considered the best area in Piedmont to grow for Barbera. It wasn’t long until La Gironda began to win awards from the press, including a Gambero Rosso 3 glasses win. La Gironda is lauded in Italy’s annual Slow Wine Guide for its delivery of both quality, and value for price. La Gironda produces Asti specialties such as: Brachetto d’Acqui and Moscato d’Asti, but Susanna’s real forte is her Barbera d’Asti wines.

2013 La Gironda, Le Nicchie, Barbera Nizza DOCG $31.95 per bottle, 6 btls Nizza grown Barbera wines have been awarded their own DOCG. La Gironda’s Le Nicchie Is a barrique-aged Nizza Barbera that is “Bustling and cheerful, this wine is full to the brim with fleshy red berries with a great intensity of flavour. Charred spice and coffee subtly underpin the dark brambly fruit and constantly enlivening acidity. A really persuasive number.” 91 pts, Magazine, May 2017

Pecchenino, Piedmont The Pecchenino family vines have been passed down, father to son, since the 18th century. Today, brothers, Orlando and Attilio, manage the 25 hectare estate and , based in Dogliani. Dogliani is the Piedmont’s home for top Dolcetto wines and Pecchenino’s Dolcettos are some of Italy’s finest. Ten years ago, they bought 7.5 hectares of vines on a south-facing slope in Monforte d’Alba. The Pecchenino brothers are recognized now too, for great Barolo.

Bovio, Piedmont The Bovio family, on the other hand, are one of the oldest families of restauranteurs in Barolo. And, it was only in mid 1970s that Gianfranco Bovio convinced his father that he, Gianfranco could be a winemaker, as well as a restauranteur. The Bovios bought vines in La Morra and for the next 40 years Gianfranco was a restauranteur first and a winegrower second. Gianfranco passed away in 2016. His daughter, Alessandra now runs the winery, while her husband manages the Bovio restaurant. The Bovio family continue to take their food and wine very seriously. Better still, they are still a little below the wine paparazzi radar and have not succumbed to the price-inflation of most of their neighbours.

Monteci, Veneto 2012 Monteci Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso,DOC, $24.95 per bottle, 12 btls The Righetti family’s Monteci winery have owned vineyards in the Valpolicella Classico region for generations. Today they combine tradition and innovation growing exemplary Ripasso and Amarone wines. 75% Corvina is blended with 20% Rondinella and 5% Oseleta before it is turbo-charged with a second fermentation over Amarone and Recioto lees “ Soft tannins, provide the frame to this flat-out juicy mouthful of ripe cherry and wild berry fruit, made more complex by notes of fennel,liquorice and black olive.”

2016 Monteci Lugana DOC, $23.95 per bottle, 12 btls Lugana is a small region on the southern shores of Lake Garda. Lugana is also the made there f om the Turbiana grape, a clone of the Marche’s better-known Verdicchio. A great summer refresher that delivers pineapple and mandarin orange scents and flavours in a round lush style with an, oh- so Italian green almond note, and saline minerality on the finish. Delicious now, but like Verdicchio can develop further flavours with ageing.”

Scheid Family Vineyards, Monterey www.district7wines.com SCHEID VINEYARDS is a big operation with more than 4200 acres of vines distributed over ten estate vineyards along a 70 mile-long stretch of Monterey’s Salinas Valley. This spread of vineyards enables Scheid to grow a range of varietals: from cool climate to Portugal’s Touriga Nacional and Tinto Cao. Al Scheid bought the first 10 acre in 1972. A Monterey pioneer, along with Chalone and Wente Brothers.

2014 William Wright Pinot Noir $19.95 per bottle, 12 btls Classic, cool climate aromas, text book Pinot brimming with bright cherry, strawberry fruit with a nice backbeat of woodlot accents, estate grown at the Northern end of the Salinas Valley.
