Recently, several scholars from around the world have focused on the possibility of transcultural memory and the transcultural construction of meaning. My research offers a constructive addition to the current theory, namely that transcultural memory is not as broad and universal as many understand. To support this argument, I have taken the Alexander von Humboldt reception history within the United States and Germany to demonstrate that transcultural memory coalesces around specific memory sites that are mutually constructed among cultures for a common purpose. I show that in the years following German reunification, the U.S.-American and German textual representation, use, and understanding of Alexander von Humboldt have come to be practically identical. I go on to posit that it is in such specific instances that transcultural memory is created, and not through a supposedly universal and transnational remembrance of historical events. My research clarifies certain concepts and elements regarding the turn to the transcultural in recent memory studies in that it demands a much more specific and concrete understanding of the processes at work in meaning making in an interconnected and globalized world. In order to show such a shared transcultural understanding, I have collected and studied all published materials regarding Alexander von Humboldt in the United States and Germany since the year 1990. In this way, my dissertation serves not only to support my central thesis regarding the constitution of transcultural memory, it also functions as a detailed textual survey of Humboldt within the two cultures over the last twenty-five years. 7 Introduction "Humboldt ist überall." So reported Nicola Kuhn in Der Tagesspiegel on 4 February, 2017. Such a sentiment is easy to understand. From bestselling books in the United States to new cultural centers in Germany, if one is looking for him, Alexander von Humboldt does indeed seem to be everywhere. What is much more fascinating than Humboldt's newfound prominence in certain cultural discourses, however, is the extent to which his representation is practically identical in seemingly disparate and different cultural

    When James Ford and Jas Shaw met at Manchester University in the late 1990s, they never imagined they'd end up creating a human synthesiser. But in their very earliest musical experiments together, something was set in motion which would lead to one of the most unusual careers in British music: one which has seen their creative mission transform again and again, inventing entirely new formats for music-making along the way. So perhaps the weaving of rich layers of human vocal tonalities sung by The Deep Throat Choir into the techno framework of their fifth studio album Murmurations isn't quite such an unexpected turn of events. In fact, they've been connecting the human voice with electronic sound since they first founded the band Simian with Simon Lord and Alex McNaughten. Simian was, in Jas's words, about “trying to show you could make band music with songs and harmonies but be into Autechre too". Named after "Simeon", the home-made early synth rig of early electronic experimentalists The Silver Apples, the band combined Crosby, Stills & Nash harmonies with hypnotic Krautrock rhythms, cosmic analogue synthesiser swooshes and an unmistakeable clubber's sense of groove - and somehow in the middle of all that managed to find something extraordinarily accessible. They were signed to a major label subsidiary in 2000, and made two albums that stand up in their own right now. But, Jas continues, it was "just at the moment the world was into the Strokes and White Stripes and straight-ahead rock music," and their rich, baroque tapestries of song and sound didn't reach the audience their ambition and beauty deserved.

However, before Obama’s election, a black American president had already appeared in popular culture, especially in comedic and sci-fi/disaster films and television series. Thus far, scholars have tread lightly on fictional black presidents in popular culture; however, those who have tend to suggest that these presidents—and the apparent unimportance of their race in these films—are evidence of the post-racial nature of these texts. However, this dissertation argues the contrary. This study’s contention is that, though the black president appears in films and televisions series in which his presidency is presented as evidence of a post-racial America, he actually fails to transcend race. Instead, these black cinematic presidents reaffirm race’s primacy in American culture through consistent portrayals and continued involvement in comedies and disasters. In order to support these assertions, this study first constructs a critical history of the fears of a black presidency, tracing those fears from this nation’s formative years to the present.

    Press release Berlin, 12 June 2017 The Invention of Nature Encountering Alexander von Humboldt with Andrea Wulf and Neil MacGregor The Humboldt Forum is hosting The Invention of Nature, a series of discussions with Andrea Wulf and Neil MacGregor in the Deutsche Theater Berlin on 16 July 2017 at 5 pm. The art historian will talk to the Humboldt Forum Steering Committee member about the relevance today of Humboldt’s understanding of nature as a living whole. The first discussion took place in Berlin last December and will be repeated thanks to the overwhelming interest in the event. Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859) was one of the most famous scientists of his time – a true cosmopolitan of international ranking. His groundbreaking thinking and ideas about nature and our place within it changed scientific research forever. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe revered him more than any other contemporary, he had a lifelong friendship with Thomas Jefferson and Charles Darwin wrote without Humboldt, he would never have boarded the Beagle. Countless glaciers, rivers and mountains in Central and South America are named after him, and there is even Mare Humboldtianum on the moon. The untiring naturalist lived in Berlin and Paris. His adventurous journeys took him to Latin America, Russia and Central Asia. Possessed by the desire to know and understand everything, his way of thinking and conducting research was way ahead of his time. Like no other researcher, Humboldt influenced our understanding of nature as a living whole, as a cosmos in which its smallest all the way to its largest component parts are connected – and with which we humans are inextricably linked.
