How to use the Atlas The Atlas has two map sections The Main Section shows the location of Russia’s intact forest landscapes. The Thematic Section shows their tree species composition in two different ways. The legend is placed at the beginning of each set of maps. If you are looking for an area near a town or village Go to the Index on page 153 and find the alphabetical list of settlements by English name. The Cyrillic name is also given along with the map page number and coordinates (latitude and longitude) where it can be found. Capitals of regions and districts (raiony) are listed along with many other settlements, but only in the vicinity of intact forest landscapes. The reader should not expect to see a city like Moscow listed. Villages that are insufficiently known or very small are not listed and appear on the map only as nameless dots. If you are looking for an administrative region Go to the Index on page 185 and find the list of administrative regions. The numbers refer to the map on the inside back cover. Having found the region on this map, the reader will know which index map to use to search further. If you are looking for the big picture Go to the overview map on page 35. This map shows all of Russia’s Intact Forest Landscapes, along with the borders and Roman numerals of the five index maps. NUCLEAR REACTORS IN ARCTIC RUSSIA Scenario 2035 The nuclearification of Russian Arctic territories is by Moscow given highest priority for development in shipping, infrastructure and exploration of natural resources. Additionally, the number of navy military reactors in the north will increase substantially over the next 15 years. This scenario paper gives an overview of the situation. Mishin Polar research Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography (PINRO), 183763 Murmansk, Russia ABSTRACT Grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) are distributed along the entire northern Murman coast in Russia. Breeding sites are located mainly on the Ainov and Seven islands, which belong to the Kandalaksha Nature Reserve. The annual pup production was estimated to be around 800 pups in the early 1990s, and the pup mortality has been observed to be relatively high. The population was estimated to be approxi- mately 3,500 individuals in 1994. Grey seals migrate in small numbers into the White Sea during sum- mer. The grey seal is protected and registered in the Red Books of Russia, Murmansk region and Fen- noscandia. The main results of grey seals investigations from 1986 to 2000 are briefly reviewed. Authored by Alireza Nader, Ali Scotten and James Hoobler; published by RAND; May 2017 https://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/perspectives/PE200/PE218/RAND_PE21 8.pdf The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 (the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and Germany) has proven successful so far. However, some major challenges to the JCPOA from within Iran may emerge in the future. This Perspective examines the nature of the factional divisions that exist in Iran; how this factionalism may impact the nuclear agreement; and the viability of the JCPOA if major events were to occur, such as the death of the supreme leader or heightened U.S.-Iran tensions. A lack of substantial economic benefits from the nuclear agreement and a marked increase in U.S.-Iranian tensions could shatter regime unity regarding the JCPOA's utility. In the short term, a failure by Rouhani to win reelection in 2017 could shift the balance of power back into the hands of traditional conservatives and principlists who oppose Iran's reintegration into the global economy and, therefore, are less averse to provoking the international community than are the centrists and reformists. Washington must do more to ensure that the average Iranian sees the economic benefits of the deal. In addition, to help ensure that centrists continue to play a decisive role until the inevitable succession crisis, Washington must take efforts to lessen Tehran's perception that the United States poses an existential threat. -

Ølgaard Risø National Laboratory, Denmark April 2006 Abstract In order to establish a systematic approach for future proliferation and environ- mental analyses of Russia’s marine nuclear reactor systems, this paper summa- rizes and analyzes the available open-source information on the design proper- ties of reactor systems and nuclear fuels. The most distinctive features of Rus- sian marine reactor development are pointed out, and similarities and differences between Russian military and civilian reactor systems and fuel are discussed. Relevant updated information on all Russian vessels using nuclear propulsion is presented in Annex I. The basic analytic division in this paper follows vessel gen- erations – first to third generation; and reactor types – PWR and LMC technol- ogy. Most of the available information is related to nuclear icebreakers. This in- formation is systematically analyzed in order to identify stages in the develop- ment of Russia’s civilian naval nuclear reactors. Three different reactor models are discussed: OK-150, OK-900 and KLT-40, together with several versions of these. Concerning military reactors, it is not possible to identify characteristics for the individual reactor models, so the basic division follows vessel generations – first to third generation. From the information available, however, it is possible to identify the main lines along which the design of submarines of especially the first and the second generation has been made. -
