RESEARCH REPORT NOVEMBER 2019 Supporting Women in the Luxury Supply Chain: A Focus on Italy BSR | Supporting Women in Luxury Supply Chains: a Focus on Italy 1 Contents About This Report 2 Executive Summary 4 Engaging Suppliers on Gender Equality 12 Gender Equality in the Italian Luxury Supply Chain 15 Supporting Women in the Italian Luxury Supply Chain—a Path 32 Forward Appendix 41 BSR | Supporting Women in Luxury Supply Chains: a Focus on Italy 2 About This Report Luxury brands have committed to supporting women’s empowerment across their value chains. Women not only represent a significant share of luxury brands’ customers and employees, they are also a critical part of luxury companies’ supply chains. Italy, in particular, is well known for being a primary sourcing country for the sector, yet the status of women in the supply chain and opportunities to support women’s economic and social empowerment remain largely unknown and unaddressed. Across many different countries, women face multiple barriers to achieving gender equality. These include: » Economic barriers such as overall low labor force participation, high proportion in the informal sector, prevalence in part-time roles, challenges advancing in their careers and into leadership and decision-making roles, unequal compensation levels, and a disproportionate amount of unpaid care work. » Social barriers such as high rates of gender-based violence and harassment, challenges accessing sexual and reproductive health services, migration and human trafficking risks, weak implementation of anti-discrimination laws, traditional roles of women in society and in the workplace, and hidden gender biases and social norms that are difficult to eradicate.

At the time of writing, the COVID-19 pandemic has inflicted many losses: human, social and economic. What we are now experiencing is an unprecedented moment of crisis in modern history. However, it is during uncertain times that companies often come up with new ideas, converting the crisis into an opportunity, and adopting a long-term vision of future challenges. This prolonged disruptive situation is creating profound changes in consumer behavior and how companies are responding to these changes—prompting a debate about the future of the fashion and luxury industry. There is a general feeling of rethinking luxury and driving it in new directions, considering which business models will be feasible and more relevant in the new normal. Tradition and responsiveness, two elements that have always characterized luxury companies, will both be required to face great challenges in the post-COVID environment. We see the pandemic acting as a divider between the old way of doing business and the new scenario that is taking shape, characterized by changing consumer behavior. Hence, in this report, we talk about a new age for fashion and luxury and will explore the main trends that will drive the industry in the coming months.

More In Store By Alison Minton Iʼve never met a store party I didnʼt like. The combination of a store party paired with a charity is even better. A couple of weeks ago three stores hosted cocktail events with the opportunity to shop for three important causes and brought out fashion conscious and charity- minded attendees. On Thursday, April 9th the Playground Partners of Central Park Conservancy hosted a shopping night at Brooks Brothers and New York Cityʼs stylinʼ moms and their friends got together to support the cause and shop for their tots. Two moms, Mary Beth Adelson and Hana Bitton, were actually just returning the favor. Both of their sons had recently bought them (with their dad's help) very nice jewelry.
