Its passengers slowly alight and begin to disperse into the muggy evening air. I step down from the bus and look left and right, trying to get my bearings. This is only my second day in Bombay and my first to venture out of the old city center and into the Northern suburbs. I approach a small circle of bus drivers and ticket takers, all clad in loose-fitting brown shirts and pants. They point me in the direction of my destination, the JVPD grounds, and I join the ranks of people marching west along a dusty, narrowing road. Before long, we are met by a colorful procession of drummers and dancers honoring the goddess Durga through thundering music and vigorous dance. The procession is met with little more than a few indifferent glances by tired workers walking home after a long day and grueling commute. -

Within his practice he is interested in using painting and collaborative method- ologies to address personal histories, traumatic pasts, and childhood memories. On a personal level, as an effeminate boy who was bullied a lot at school, I found solace in making art, reading books, and Western television – and perhaps, I was looking for escape. And, this desire to escape was further re-affirmed by the stories I would hear from family relatives who would travel, sharing their exciting adventures along with photographic and video evidence re-affirming that, indeed, life outside Pakistan had much more to offer. -

Close up on Austyn, a slightly tubby editor (with boyish good looks and a roguish charm). He is terrified. His palms are sweating, he is shaking a little. He holds a pen tightly but is not writing. In front of him is a blank piece of paper. This was where I found myself towards the end of our Future of Video Breakfast Briefing last week. I had just been asked to write my first ever advertising pitch. I write about this stuff all the time, but I’ve never had to do it in the flesh. It was part of YouTube’s workshop about how to produce Ramadan content that would do well on that platform. The – mercifully imaginary – brief was the launch of a new television channel, Hala, with programming focus on comedy, drama and romance. Each table in the workshop had to come up with a YouTube web series that would promote this channel. And my mind was blank. Luckily, I was surrounded by less blank, brighter and more imaginative people and we finally came up with Iftar vs. Iftar, a cooking show that pitches millennial couples against their parents and parents-in-law. Some dishes are traditional, some are modern. Like Hala, it shows how tradition and modernity can exist side-by-side. -

Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat: Futurism and Pirate Modernity in South Asian Electronica Kyle Lindstrom Schirmann A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies Columbia University New York, New York May 1, 2015 © 2015 Kyle Lindstrom Schirmann All rights reserved ABSTRACT Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat: Futurism and Pirate Modernity in South Asian Electronica Kyle Lindstrom Schirmann Ravi Sundaram’s conception of recycled, or pirate, modernity was first deployed to explain the extralegal circuits of production and consumption of pirated and counterfeit goods, particularly in India. This thesis argues that the production, performance, distribution, and consumption of South Asian electronic music can be read under the specter of an aestheticization of the circuits of pirate modernity. Through sampling, glitching, and remixing artifacts, sometimes with pirated software or counterfeit hardware, South Asian electronica situates itself in youth culture as an underground form of sound. This is a music that concerns itself with futurity and futurism, doubly so by its links to the diaspora and to Afrofuturist readings, and with the physicality of the sound wave. The thesis also suggests a shift in the economic and political import of pirate modernity wrought by this aestheticization, examining how it has been appropriated for profit and mobilized for political use.
