Later, Mubarrad wrote a work which is not only didactic but a valuablecollection of poetic quotations. He also shareswith his rival and contemporary,Tha'lab, the honor of having contributedto the philological training of severalpoets. -

Ab Tamm M's Contribution to Abb Sid Gazal Poetry
AB� TAMM�M'S CONTRIBUTION TO �ABB�SID GAZAL POETRY When Abu Tammam is mentioned, three things come to mind: the col- lection of the Ifamäsa, the badi-style and the madih-poems, because it was this genre to which Abu Tammam devoted most of his verses. Therefore, western scholars label Abu Tammam as a "neo-classical" poet along with al-Buhturi and al-Mutanabbi because, unlike Abu Nuwds, Abu Tammam did not contribute to the "modern" genres, such as, e.g., wine and love poetry. While this is quite true in the case of wine poetry, it is not true at all in the case of the gazal genre. Of course, the number of lines of Abu Tam- mdm's gazal poems is much smaller than the number of lines devoted to madih poems. But this is simply due to the fact that gazal poems are much shorter than madih poems. If we take the number of poems, the proportion of madih to gazal turns out to be rather surprising: the dlwan1 contains 132 gazal poems compared to 175 madih poems, so the difference is not so great. In fact, as far as we know, there is no poet between Abu Nuwas and Halid al-Katib who has left behind a comparable amount of gazal verse. This comparatively high number of gazal verse in the dlwän of Abu Tam- mam corresponds to the importance this poet is given in the later antholo- gies of love poetry. Let us take as an example the first part of the Kitab az- Zahra of Ibn Däwüd al-Isfahani.2 In this book, the most often quoted poets are al-Buhturi and Abu Tammam. -

Die drei Bücher weisen zahlreiche, zum Teil bis in einzelne Formulierungen gehende Über- einstimmungen auf und spiegeln so SCHIMMELS nur allzu gutes Gedächtnis. VON SCHÖNBORN und SCHIMMEL selbst bieten eine Kurzbibliographie. Auf eine Biobibliographie, die den Namen verdient, muss man also noch warten. Die Ge- sprächsbände sind sparsam illustriert, während SCHIMMEL für ihre Autobiogra- phie einige historische Schwarzweiß-Aufnahmen zur Verfügung gestellt hat. Der Schutzumschlag dieses Werks zeigt ein schönes neues Portrait von ihr in der Pose einer altmodischen Diva mit Chiffonschal und Sonnenbrille, unter der sie, wie der zweite Blick enthüllt, eine zweite gewöhnliche Brille trägt - für mich ein wunder- bares Bild für diese große Gestalt der deutschen Islamwissenschaft. Hamburg Karin Hörner Philip F. KENNEDY: The Wine Song in Classical Arabic Poetry: Abu Nuwas and the Literary Tradition. Oxford 1997: Clarendon Press Oxford, xii, 304 pp. (Oxford Oriental Monographs). The literary fame of Abu Nuwäs al-Hasan b. Hani' al-Hakami (died between 813 and 815) is founded on his reputation as poete maudit, whose diwan contains brilliant examples of both the traditional poetic genres and their parodies. The poet was a contemporary - and an alleged boon companion - of Harun al-Rashid (ruled 786-809). Both men became the subject of many legends, and popular stories about them are preserved through the Arabian Nights (Abu Nuwäs (Ewald WAGNER), in: Encyclopaedia of Islam, Leiden 21960, I, 143-144, 144b). These stories, in which the poet appears as an equal of the 'Abbasid caliph, document the social and political importance of poetry in the emerging Arabo-Islamic culture of the 'Abbasid court in Baghdad. -

International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR) ISSN: 2319-7064 SJIF (2019): 7.583 Out of the Closet: Queer Love in Arabic Literature and Islamic Society Hadeel Safa Hadi Al-Bayati Istanbul Yeni Yüzyıl University, English Language and Literature Department Abstract: When same-sex desire is brought to literature it gives it a new shape. This kind of literature is crucial, urgent, and relevant to today’s world and it has a lasting impact on the human sexual experience. Nevertheless, this type of literature in itself is rarely the focus of research, thus it remains undefined and under-explained. Since there are no serious studies on homosexuality in Arabic literature, I find it necessary to address this scholarly gap by shedding light on such an argumentative subject especially in today’s world. Depending on this consideration, this study focuses on the interplay between homosexuality and Islamic culture. By so doing, it explores the manifestation of twin flame relationships in Arabic literature, in light of its epistemic closure in Arabic cultural societies. Accordingly, the study is equipped with specific references to famous Arabic poets, novelists, and short fiction writers, who are qualified to depict the constructions of queer desire and sexual customs of Arabic Muslims. Therefore, the study provides a vehicle for conveying multiple portrayals of homoeroticism in Arabic literature and Islamic society that values religion above all. Looking at the representations of queer social relations, we hope to find both echoes of the Arabic Muslims’ views on queer relationships and indications of the ways in which the conceptual state of bisexuality is evolving in both Arabic literature and its culture. -
“Epigram”. the Reason for This Lack Is Perhaps, Rather Than the Absence of Epigrams in Arabic Literature, Their Ubiquity
POINTED AND WELL-ROUNDED ARABIC ENCOMIASTIC AND ELEGIAC EPIGRAMS There is no Arabic word for “epigram”. The reason for this lack is perhaps, rather than the absence of epigrams in Arabic literature, their ubiquity. Not only is there a great abundance of short poems from all periods that may be described as epigrams in the usual meaning of this term, but longer poems are often composed, as it were, of a series of epigrams, be they single lines or short passages. Most Arabic poems are either epigrams or epigrammatic1. Of the traditional modes of Arabic poetry some are especially associ- ated with the epigram: invective and satirical verse, gnomic verse and descriptive, epideictic (or ecphrastic) verse. The vehicle for these modes may be a lengthy poem, it is true; they may combine with other modes in a qaÒida. But the typical poem of hija}, Ìikma, zuhd or waÒf is short and pointed — the two basic characteristics of the epigram. Other modes, notably panegyric and elegiac verse, seem to thrive mainly through longer poems, even after the innovative early {Abbasid period, when a number of “shorter forms” are said to have come into being. In a recent and authoritative survey of the history of Arabic poetry, it is said that shorter genres came into being, besides the panegyric qaÒida and the elegy; these two modes are not included in the shorter forms, as if short poems were never panegyric or elegiac2. Judging by the hand- books and histories of Arabic literature, one would be led to believe that “the encomiastic epigram” is an almost paradoxical term for something non-existent. -

For the sake of brevity I refer to my prefaces in those volumes. A few essentials my be repeated here. Not all manuscripts mentioned in the present volume were viewed by autopsy, but many were. The sheer number of manuscripts makes this impossible. At a later stage this may be achieved, but trying to achieve this at the present stage of inventorizing would seriously hamper the progress of the present project.
