From the Planning Meeting

A number of ideas came up at the planning meeting on Saturday, 5 November 2016, including (but not limited to):

Open Houses--Visits  Tour of Emory Motorsports in North Hollywood, probably in February to see—among other things—the 356SL that took Porsche’s 1st class win at Le Mans in 19512  Nethercutt Museum  Norton Simon/Rusnak  Getty Museum/Getty Villa  Griffith Observatory  USS Midway, San Diego  USS Iowa, San Pedro  JPL  Automobile Driving Museum, El Segundo  Porsche Experience Center, Carson

Driving Tours  Mulholland (Mullin Museum?)  Poppy Fields (Spring)  San Diego  San Juan Capistrano via Ortega Highway  Reagan Library  Santa Paula Airport  Santa Ynez Winery  Taco Truck Tour—probably late Spring of 2017.  After Breakfast Meeting Tour to Mt. Baldy (15 April 2017)  A breakfast trip up Angeles Crest Highway to Newcomb’s Ranch instead of Mimi’s (after May 2017)  Big Bear-Oak Glen, probably 23 September 2017  Overnight Tour to Monterey, possibly 30 September-1 October 2017 to go through Cholame on the anniversary of James Dean’s crash.  Tour of Angeles Crest Highway to Wrightwood—Grizzly Café (date and details TBD—could be after breakfast).

2 This is not just wishful thinking—Rod Emory has offered to host us. We just need to work out the logistics.

Classic Porsche Needs a New Home

I have a 1970 911T with a Targa top and matching numbers in Porsche Conda Green available for sale. This car came to me as someone else’s abandoned “80’s look” project. Previous owners spray painted the body white, blacked out all the trim, dyed the interior black. In general, made a mess out of a classic car in attempts to capture the “Miami Vice” look that was so en vogue at the time. So we had the car taken to a professional paint shop to remove all the dents and repainted to its factory color, which is the Conda Green.

sgvr.pca.org 8 of 63 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 21 February 2017

Interior is completely redone with new carpet, seat covers, door cards and other interior bits. The previous owners had tried at some point to convert the car to a fuel-injected setup, apparently failed, and then tried to go back to the stock carbureted setup. So to make sure this Targa runs the way it should (or better, really), we replaced the Zenith carburetors (which on their own were notorious for being tricky to deal with) with Weber carbs, replaced various other parts (such as the exhaust), and then had the engine rebuilt and tuned to make sure it was at its peak. Of course getting power to the ground is just as important, so we repaired/replaced/refreshed the suspension, as well as refurbished the wheels and mounted new tires.

For more information about this vehicle, please contact us at (888) 978-9899 or email us at [email protected].

Car location: Rancho Cucamonga, CA Asking price: $99,995

This Targa is being sold by the folks at Schnell Autosports. They sell Porsche parts and accessories but they are not a car dealer—this is a private sale.

Porsche Events

2-6 March 2017, LitMeet Weekend

The Weekend LA becomes the Center of the Porsche Universe!

For 2017, Stoddard has taken over the LitMeet from Prescott Kelley, Wayne Callaway, and Jim Perrin who built a little swap meet into one of the world’s most important Classic Porsche events. The website www.lalitandtoyshow.com has been live for some time. They can be contacted at [email protected].

Saturday, 4 March 2017, Porsche and Vintage VW Literature, Toy/Model, & Memorabilia Swap Meet Yes, the full name is a mouthful. The centerpiece of LitMeet weekend will fill the ballrooms at the LAX Hilton: you need to spring for the “early bird” admission just to have time to see [almost] everything.

Years ago, there was table after table filled with old Porsche literature. You’d find a brochure or something you wanted then walk around looking to buy it at the best value. The literatures become rare now and the LitMeet has evolved into something of a trade show where you can meet the folks you’d normally deal with over the Internet.

Parking There may be a small discount on parking at the Hilton. The Hilton garage has ceilings too low for minivans or SUVs and it can fill up early. This is LAX so there’s lots of parking nearby.

sgvr.pca.org 10 of 63 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 21 February 2017

356 Registry Members - Meeting with Trustees 356 Registry members can address their questions and concerns to a majority of the board 2:00 PM to 3:15 PM upstairs at the Hilton immediately following the Toy and Lit Show.

Sunday, 5 March 2017, So Cal All-Porsche Swap and Car Display There’s more of a traditional swap meet at the Phoenix Club as well as lots and lots of nice cars to ogle. You aren’t shuffling through crowded aisles so it’s easy to meet your Porsche friends. And! The Phoenix Club has excellent food and German beer.

There are now TWENTY3 Open Houses to choose from (see Related Events): People will come from all over the world. Nearly every one of those folks will see and be seen at Willhoit’s on Friday and European Collectibles on Saturday.

Sierra Madre Collection's first Warehouse Open House in 2016 also drew a big crowd—it’s Thursday.

Confusion There are some inconsistencies between the Related Events page and the Shop Tour page. If there’s a shop you’d like to visit that doesn’t have hours listed on the Related Events page but is supposed to be on a Shop Tour, consider confirming with that shop.

Twofers  FRIDAY: Hunziker and Klasse 356 are in the same building, and Callas Rennsport is a couple blocks North. You can only turn into Callas Rennsport from the northbound side of Hawthorne Blvd—if parking’s full it can be hard to circle back. Consider parking in the lot South of Callas.  SATURDAY: Jim Liberty & European Collectibles are on opposite sides of the street. California Porsches4 is in-between and Carparc USA LLC is a short drive (and their open house starts earlier).

Hot Food  John Willhoit’s Open House  European Collectibles, Inc. 10th Annual “OPEN HOUSE”  Sierra Madre Collection's Warehouse Open House  Auto Kennel’s Open House (pizza)  The Phoenix Club (excellent German fare if the dining room’s open—always good eats in the courtyard, not to mention German beer)

3 And there are more that aren’t even listed on the Related Events webpage. 4 California Porsches is a small outfit and has never been listed in Related Events, but they figured out about the Porsche traffic.

sgvr.pca.org 11 of 63 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 21 February 2017

Upscale Food  Hunziker Open House (Heather Norwood serves the good stuff)  Callas Rennsport Open House (Corner Bakery)  Sierra Madre Collection (Jorge Perez has promised)

Rare Cars  Pelican Parts Open House (Wayne Dempsey’s collection has several race cars: not hot rodded 914s either: 956 & 962 le Mans Racers)  Callas Rennsport Open House (911Rs5, Carrera GTs, 959s)  John Willhoit’s Open House (rare 356s)  European Collectibles, Inc. (Ferraris, Aston Martins, 300SLs, Spyders…)

356 Specialists  John Willhoit’s Open House  Klasse 356  GTwerk/Bob Kann’s Open House (Outlaws)  Jim Liberty’s Open House6

Early 911 Specialists  TRE Motorsports  John Esposito Restorations  Carparc USA LLC (new, bigger facility beside the old shop)

912 Specialist  Benton Performance, 1275 N. Lance St, Anaheim, CA7

Panelbeater  Steve Hogue Enterprises Open House. Steve is one of those rare folks who takes sheet steel and turns it into cars.

Rocky & Bullwinkle and Adult Beverages  Jim Liberty’s Open House is the only one to have served beer. Tiffany Liberty’s father, Jay Ward, created Rocky & Bullwinkle and there’s plenty of memorabilia.

5 Porsche only built 25 911Rs and Tony often has two of them at his open house. 6 Jim Liberty is noted for “semi-outlaw” 356s, usually with optically perfect black paint and red leather. His “shop truck” is one of the most original custom VW transporters: a Binz double-cab with a 356 pre-A dashboard and Speedster seats. And yes, it has optically perfect black paint and red upholstery. 7 Benton Performance isn’t listed in Related Events but is a stop for a Friday Bus Tour.

sgvr.pca.org 12 of 63 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 21 February 2017

New for 2017  Pelican Parts Open House  John Esposito Restorations  TRE Motorsports  Porsche South Bay Classic Center Open House  Autos International, Escondido, CA  Makellos Classics, Escondido, CA  Autobahn Interiors, San Diego, CA  Performance Vintage International LLC

LitMeet Shop Tours In 2017, the LitMeet’s offering bus tours for the Thursday and Friday before the LitMeet. The goal is to create an enjoyable, relaxing way for folks unfamiliar with Los Angeles traffic to see the Porsche shops in the area. The cost will be $50 (or $90 for both days). The busses will leave the LAX Hilton at 9:00 AM and return about 4:00 PM. Book tours at (440) 869-9890.

On Thursday the Points South Bus will go all the way South to8:  California Porsche Restorations, Fallbroook, CA  Autos International, Escondido, CA  Makellos Classics, Escondido, CA  Autobahn Interiors, San Diego, CA

8 Of these, only California Porsche Restorations is listed at Related Events.

After “trial call” on Friday, 17 February 2017, “further proceedings” have been scheduled for Hyun Jeong Choi, 34, who is charged with second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI with drugs in the 27 March 2017 crash that killed 43-year-old Amanda Walzer and left her fiancé, 49-year-old Jon Warshawsky, unable to care for himself due to a brain injury. She faces 21 years to life in prison if convicted of all charges.

Review: Porsche’s Restaurant 917

From Eater LA, by Farley Elliott Feb 15, 2017, 10:25 AM PST

Most “hidden” restaurants are small, demure things, tucked away out of sight and only accessible with a whispered password. But Restaurant 917, the recently opened Porsche-backed restaurant strutting atop the sports car manufacturer’s Experience Center (a fancy phrase for their driving school and showroom) in Carson, CA doesn’t fit that mold at all — yet it’s practically guaranteed you’ve never heard of the place.

Inside Restaurant 917--Photo by Farley Elliott

The grounds on which Restaurant 917 (that’s “nine-seventeen,” a famous Le Mans-winning car from the Porsche lineup) span acres, with a couple of rolling hills, tight racing corners and mechanic bays. It’s a noisy plot of land tucked into a triangle between the 110 Freeway and the 405 Freeway, a few hundred yards from the eye-catching Goodyear Blimp landing pad. Not exactly out of sight (and with the low thrum of tuned engines cresting hills every so often, not out of sound either).

sgvr.pca.org 40 of 63 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 21 February 2017

That said, Restaurant 917 doesn’t much cater to the public. The second-floor restaurant sits inside a looming Porsche facility packed with timeless auto racing relics, its entrance hidden behind visitor badges, locked doors, and long hallways. The clientele is almost exclusively folks who work at Porsche, and those who have come to drive.

But the truth is, anyone can show up. You can even make a reservation on OpenTable for a weekday lunch or weekend evening meal, then be whisked away to your seat against floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Porsche performance track. There’s a bar, a private dining room, and a small outdoor perch for catching the action with your ears as much as your eyes.

As for the food, it’s far better than you might think, owing in no small part to the discerning clientele coming in for a bite to eat. Chef Matt Lee comes over from a stint as executive chef at the restaurant at the Getty, and he’s turning out a tuned-up menu of basics — grilled flat bread, ahi tuna, flat iron steak, an $18 burger — and notable surprises, not least of which is Lee’s commitment to sourcing everything from within less than 200 miles away. A lunch tasting menu runs $35 a head, and cocktails hover in the $15 range.

Really though, the sweetest part of the whole experience is the automobile eye candy. Cars line up for road course jaunts every hour or so, and in the meantime guests can wander around downstairs to watch the mechanics do their thing on some truly classic rides. After all, just about everyone in the restaurant is there because they love Porsche — even the guy in the kitchen who makes sure the butter that accompanies each table’s bread service is shaped like the iconic Porsche 911.

Butter, Photo by Farley Elliott Restaurant 917 quietly opened late last year, and keeps hours for lunch Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and dinner Thursday through Saturday, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Paul Walker Lawsuit: “Porsche Celebrated Carrera Crashes”

From TMZ, 2/15/2017 4:11 PM PST

In new legal docs obtained by TMZ, lawyers in Meadow Walker’s wrongful death lawsuit against the car company revealed Porsche concealed emails from them ... emails about the Carrera.

Among the emails from 2006 [7 years before the Paul Walker Crach], an employee wrote as many as 200 of the 1280 Carrera GTs which Porsche had produced had been “totaled” in the first 2 years they were sold ... 2004 - 2006.

The Porsche employee who wrote the email goes on to say, “This would be great news to the remaining owners as the GT becomes more rare.”

The employee also told this story ... “Another Carrera bites the dust as a bodyshop mechanic who claimed he was going less than 30 MPH smashed into a telephone poll. Looks like he was going more than 30 to me!”

There’s another email from another employee who is reacting to the number of wrecks, saying, “This is in the back of my head every time I get behind the wheel of one of these. It’s just hidden behind the shit-eating grin!”

Oregon Rejects $ 1,000 “Impact” Tax on Old Cars

From Hemmings Classic Car, by Daniel Strohl on 14 February 2017 at 8:58 AM

Multiple Oregon state legislators said over the weekend that they would not allow a bill that would introduce a $1,000 impact tax on any vehicle older than 20 years to become law.

H.B. 2877 would have imposed the tax every five years on 20-year-old and older vehicles registered in the state. The only exemption the bill made was for vehicles registered as antiques. Revenue from the impact tax would have gone toward repairing and maintaining the state’s roads and bridges, reportedly a priority for the Oregon legislature this session.

sgvr.pca.org 44 of 63 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 21 February 2017

Under Oregon law, only vehicles older than half the number of years between 1900 and the current year (for 2017, that would include vehicles older than 1959) and those used only for exhibitions, parades, club events, and similar uses qualify as antiques.

Phil Barnhardt, chair of the House Committee on Revenue, to which House Speaker Tina Kotek referred the bill on Friday, told Willamette Week on Saturday that he wouldn’t schedule a hearing for the bill, effectively stopping it in its tracks. Kotek told SEMA that the bill was “dead on arrival.”

Men 20 km Individual Competition, 16 February 2017—AMERICAN WINS! From www.biathlonworld.com, 16 February 2017 Lowell Bailey Wins 20K Individual; First World Champion for USA

Clean-shooting Lowell Bailey of the USA became the first World Champion from the USA when he won the men’s 20K individual Gold medal in 48:07.4. This was also the 35-year-old Bailey’s first-ever career victory. The Silver medal went to Ondrej Moravec of Czech Republic, 3.3 seconds back. France’s Martin Fourcade, winner of the last four major individual titles won the Bronze medal, with two penalties, 21.2 seconds back.

Ondrej Moravec (Silver), Lowell Bailey (GOLD), Martin Fourcade (BRONZE)

Fourcade Leads despite Two Penalties The first man out of the start gate was Russia’s ; he won the last Individual in Antholz, but his two prone misses threw him out of medal contention. Fourcade started with bib number 4; he set the pace early in the competition, despite penalties in the two prone stages.

At one point, it looked like the man to challenge Fourcade would be Norway’s Johannes Thingnes Boe, who took the lead after the second stage, but the Norwegian star, although skiing well had penalties in the last two stages and fell back.

20-for-20 for the Victory Instead of the big names, Moravec shot clean for the first time in an individual and finished with a comfortable lead as he waited in the leader’s lounge, Bailey was making his bid for his first victory dropping the first fifteen targets to take the lead by 12 seconds over Moravec. The Lake Placid New York native calmly hit the last five shots, leaving with a 6.4 second lead. As he went through the easier part of the 4k loop, he lost a few seconds, until with 1100 meters to go, he had just a.1 second lead. Over the finals stretch, he clawed back time and sprinted across the finish line with his first career victory and each mark his lead was decreasing, and the crowd witnessed nail-biting battle in finish area. Bailey held on to win his first title.

sgvr.pca.org 50 of 63 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 21 February 2017

Regarding the last loop, he commented, “The last loop felt like it was 40k, not 4k.I was fortunate that I was one of the last starters, I had every member from our stuff shout their heads off at me. I thought to myself, “Don’t let the medal go away, just keep going.”

“Unbelievable” Medal Bailey was overwhelmed with his victory. “I am waiting for someone to wake me up. It’s all clichés: ‘it’s unbelievable, it’s like a dream.’ It means so much because of all the hard work that went into this medal and all of the support that I’ve had; it all have paid off.”

He added on what this medal means for him and his team, “It is special for me to share this medal with the staff from our team. I am just so happy that I am here with this team; I could not have done it without them...I have wanted a WCH medal for so long. It’s still sinking in.

Moravec Happy for Bailey Silver medalist Moravec was happy for Bailey.”I was exciting, in the beginning it looked better for me, but I am so happy for his Gold medal. He is a good guy and he deserves it. Today I was the closest ever to the Gold medal. I never shot clean in Individual, so I didn’t think so. I am really satisfied that I did it, it was the right race for me today.”

Fourcade “Tried to be Too Good” Fourcade said it was hard to predict being on the podium. “It’s never easy to bet on your position when you have 100 guys following you. I was not sure about the medal, so I am satisfied.” He explained his shooting mistakes, “Sometimes you try to be too good. In the sprint, it was the same situation. In the pursuit, I didn’t have the thoughts about having to shoot clean and it worked.”

Women 4x6 km Relay Competition, 17 February 2017 The German women, led by Laura Dahlmeier continued their domination. Susan Dunklee clawed back almost a full minute for the US team but her team mates couldn’t maintain the position.

In the relay, athletes can single load three additional rounds at each five target shooting stage if they miss a target (single loading takes about 7 seconds). Any additional misses require a 150 meter penalty loop. Austria was disqualified when Julia Schwaiger used four spare rounds in her prone shooting stage.
