I am partictularily interested in that history which has left tangible evidence in the form of many castles dotting the Vosges foothills and the fortified towns which often opposed them on the fertile plains below. Not only the towns and castles themselves but the ghosts of those who lived there, their concerns, motavations, and the broader European social currents that influenced and often inundated them. I have started with a backbone of articles describing the many castles which remain ever present. These are the transition civilation existing between an early Celtic and Roman world swamped by the growth of Frankish power, and by a later Europe shaped by new cities and ideas yet retaining the legacy of feudal/aristocratic ambitions and foibles. The ruins of ideas often as present as the castles themselves. Alsace is one of those border states (as it were) always part of larger neighboring regions without necessarily a unique history of its own. What happened in Alsace happened in Europe and what happened in Europe happened in Alsace. As such, a look into this region's history provides larger insights and understanding. These two volumes are certainly my version of an argument from the specific to the general. For each volume I include at the end a more extensive summary of Alsace history, a slightly larger perspective. As each of the two volumes are intended to work stand-alone if desired, the Alsace History is repeated in both volumes. Subject to regular attack, the fortifications were modernised to withstand the increasingly powerful means of destruction resulting from rapid advances in artillery. “They shall not pass!” Fortifications, from the Séré de Rivières System to the Maginot Line, will re-evaluate the role of the Maginot Line in the defeat of June 1940, re-examining the view that it was a mistake inevitably leading to defeat, in particular due to a lack of fighting spirit on the part of the French troops. The exhibition aims to explain the Maginot Line by going back in time and seeing it in relation to the different types of fortification that had appeared following France’s defeat in the Franco- Prussian War in 1870. It traces the development of successive defensive systems and the life of their garrisons, from the Séré de Rivières System of the end of the 19th century, via the Verdun fortification during the First World War, to the Maginot Line (1929-1939), the high point of French defensive engineering.

This created repeated and continued periods of non- uniform discount rates across the 12 Federal Reserve districts. Commercial banks did not take full advantage of these differentials, reflecting the effectiveness of qualitative restrictions on the use of discount window liquidity in limiting the geographical movement of funds. While the choice of regional autonomy over complete financial integration was reasonable given the characteristics of the U.S. monetary union in the interwar period, the Federal Reserve failed to use this autonomy to stabilize regional economic activity relative to the national average. The diagnosis that the costs of decentralization outweighed the gains from regional differentiation motivated reforms that standardized and centralized control of Reserve bank discount policies. Supply-Side Policies in the Depression: Evidence from France The effects of supply-side policies in depressed economies are controversial.

    HISTORY OF THE PARIS–COLMAR EVENT The famous PARIS-STRASBOURG event has been the yardstick by which the top ultra distance walkers have measured themselves for over 80 years. In 1926, Emile Anthoine, President of le Cercle des Sports de France, launched a 504 km event and some 50 walkers took up the challenge. It made sense to start the event in Paris while Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace, was chosen as the finish point. Strasbourg was chosen to reinforce the French links with the Alsace region, recently returned to the motherland after the Great War. The 1926 event was won by French walker Jean Linder who covered the 504km in 78 hours and 47 minutes. He won it again the following year in a much faster 72 hours and 1 minute. The following photo shows him after the win. To recognise his performance, many walkers wear a beret in the first stage. Jean Linder who won the first two editions of the Paris-Colmar in 1926 and 1927 Soon after the Second World War, the event swapped direction to become the STRASBOURG-PARIS. In 1981, on the initiative of Francis Jenevein, the finish was changed to COLMAR and the event was rebadged as the PARIS-COLMAR. The distance has varied from year to year as the event weaved its way through different towns, like the famous Tour de France in the cycling world. Even so, the event was normally 440+ km in distance (the record is 552 km in 1952) and was walked almost continuously, with only a small number of compulsory rest spots.
