What makes Posset's book worth reading for the historian is not only his thorough analysis of Staupitz's theology and concepts of reform con‐ cepts, but also the detailed documentation of Staupitz's close involvement in the early Reforma‐ tion process. Along the way, by describing Staupitz as one of the most outstanding represen‐ tatives of church reform in the beginning of the sixteenth century in Germany, the author shows how the organization of an order like the Augus‐ tinians worked in everyday life. He illuminates Staupitz not only as a theologian and preacher, but also as the busy manager and political leader of an early modern religious organization--a man who spent much more time travelling from monastery to monastery and hurrying from one preaching assignment to the next than in the tran‐ quillity of a cloister. Moreover, we see how Staupitz worked and acted within a carefully wo‐ ven social and political network of friars as well as nobles and patricians of larger cities. In Nuremberg, for example, the existence of a Staupitz sodality which included such outstanding figures as Willibald Pirckheimer, Christoph Scheurl, or Albrecht Duerer points to the impor‐ tance of an accurate assessment of Johann von Staupitz's historical impact. For all these reasons, this "theological biography" deserves the interest of historians as well. I could understand some of my colleagues like Knox and Calvin even, but for me to come here? I think it’s because of the association of the 95 Theses at this time and a significant milestone is here so you want to hear from me. I’d like to begin this way. There were major areas where the Reformation began to explode to change everything – Strasburg, London, Edenborough, even my own small village that became an unbelievable center of activity, Wittenberg. The one that you maybe most familiar with is Geneva. It is there that they acknowledge it with an interesting statement in Latin, ‘Post tenebras lux’ which translated means ‘out of darkness light.’ At the end of the 15 th century, beginning of 16 th century there was much darkness and the darkness had enveloped governments of the land. There was nothing more contradictory than the name of the dominate empire, the Holy Roman Empire. It was not holy or Roman nor was it an empire yet it controlled many. There were wars taking place and the oppression of peasants. Most of all was the darkness within the church. It has been descending for almost a thousand years. The church is embracing what is known as sacerdotalism which is the power of the church to administer salvation through its sacraments and its clerics by its indulgences with its relics.

Professor Levi stands in a long line of scholars who have written “out of the conviction that the phenomena we know as the renaissance and the reformation are connected” (p. xi). In the twentieth century, it seems, the pursuit of the link between these two phenomena has garnered the lion’s share of ink spilt on the early modern period, and Levi’s book admirably reacquaints students with the enterprise. But Levi goes farther in his quest than merely locating a connection between the Renaissance and the Reformation; he attempts to locate the fabled Northwest Passage, as it were — a single waterway connecting the west with the east — and here his efforts are decidedly mixed. The title itself posits a common genesis for the two phenomena, presuming that the Reformation is a natural offspring of the Renaissance, and that both spring from the loins of Ockham. According to this outlook, one could perhaps lay even the French Revolution at Ockham’s door, and a host of subsequent stepchildren instantly clamor for attention. Beginning with “The Intellectual Problem of the Middle Ages,” here summed up as the “crisis” of scholasticism that developed among a small coterie of philosophers and divines between the naturalism of Aquinas and the nominalism of Ockham in the fourteenth century, Levi concludes with the various schismatic political solutions of reformed states such as Germany, the Swiss Confederation, and England several hundred years later.

For the anxious and pious Martin Luther, faith is God’s changing work within us. 2 Living by faith and not by works distinguishes Christians from the rest. Luther further explains in his treaty, The Freedom of a Christian, the risk of the Christian life losing its dignity by following one of two extremes; when man loves no one except his own faith, or when he disregards faith entirely, attempting to rescue himself by empty works. 3 The purpose of this essay is to explain the reasons behind Martin Luther’s belief of ‘faith alone’ and why he went so far to defend it. Luther’s main reasons for arguing for justification by faith alone come from his personal experience as an Augustinian monk, his lack of faith in his own troubled conscience and finding freedom in a loving God he once loathed. Although Luther’s desire for reform is derived from his strong disapproval of indulgences, what pushed him to propose such an extreme and unparalleled method of salvation was the fear of his own sinfulness and God’s judgment.
