Farlingaye High School Foundation

AGM (with wine, nibbles and useful workshops for parents!) 7.00pm Thursday 18th September 2014 FORUM EXAM RESULT SPECIAL

AM absolutely delighted to report that we had yet another excellent I summer with some of our best ever results at both GCSE and A level. We were “83% of grades were also delighted with the success of our at A* to C - our students at AS level and the Year 10 GCSE Statistics. The national papers once again second best ever and listed us as a highly performing school and much higher than the we were the highest listed school in the national average.” county.

Our A level results were fantastic and confirmed our position as of the most consistently top performing schools in the county. 31% of grades were at grade A*/A and 83% of the grades were A* to C - our second best ever and much higher than the national average. 66 students achieved at least 2A grades and a quarter achieved an A*. Our average total point score per student at 995 and average score per subject at 229 are extremely high and significantly above national averages.

There were many superb individual performances. Particular credit goes to Lawrence Beaumont, Emily Ley and Sam Moody who all achieved at least three A* grades.

As well as those gaining very high grades, we were equally pleased with the excellent performances from less able students who, whilst maybe not getting A and A* grades, exceeded their target grades and achieved the excellent individual results needed to secure Higher Education places. Many students this year were offered places by their first choice institution. Huge congratulations are due to all students for doing so well. A list of results and Higher Education destinations for all our Sixth Form students is shown on pages 4-8.

The celebration of success was repeated a week later with the arrival of superb GCSE results. Again, these were the second best we’ve achieved. I know that all parents of Year 11 students would agree that a great deal of effort had been put in by both the students and staff in preparing for “The celebration the examinations. An excellent 69% achieved of success was 5A* - C including English and Maths. In a year repeated a week when other schools dropped significantly we later with the were thrilled that our figure was just 0.5% arrival of superb below last year’s, our best results. GCSE results.”

2 EXAM RESULT SPECIAL FORUM We were particularly thrilled with performances at the top end, with 28% of “There were many grades at A/A*. We were very pleased that superb individual the Maths results were the best in the county. performances, with a It was equally pleasing to see many less able quarter achieving students, who had worked incredibly hard, to 5A/A* grades and a secure the grades needed for post-16 courses. fantastic 13% The Year 12s taking AS exams appear achieving 10A/A8 to have done well and successfully handled grades” the enormous pressure put on them to spend yet another summer taking exams, especially as they had not been able to take modules in January. We don’t put the results of these in this Forum as many of the students will take them on to A2 and many retake papers. Congratulations as well to Year 10 - many of whom did very well in their Statistics GCSE.

At the school we work incredibly hard to support our exam students and it’s great to see all their hard work pay off. This year we ran monitoring and mentoring schemes in both Year 12 and Year 13, as well as one-year focused achievement groups. 260 students participated in the six study residentials that we ran. In addition, we held revision days, coursework evenings, special classes and exam revision clubs for Years 10, 11, 12 and 13. Many of these were held in the holidays, at weekends and until late in the evening and I’m really grateful to all the staff for giving up so much time to help our students. There were breakfast sessions on the morning of exams and also a lot of one-to-one teaching, cajoling and encouraging in all four exam year groups! I’d also like to thank all our parents for all you do to support and encourage all our students.

We wish all our students well with their studies as they progress to their next level.

Dear Parent/Carer

Hopefully, all parents and carers received my letter distributed to students last week. Welcome back to a new school year if you didn’t get it!

Please find enclosed our Exams Forum which gives you detailed information about just how brilliantly our students did in their exams this summer. They all deserve so much credit for working so hard. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Our AGM for the FHSF is on Thursday, September 18th at 7pm. Hopefully you’ll receive this beforehand but I will also send flyers out! Again, please at- tend if you can. The business part is short (30 minutes maximum) and we have wine and nibbles! We then have a selection of workshops for you to choose two from. We hope you’ll find these useful. This year they include:- protecting your child online; trial exciting year 7/8 Maths and English lessons; developing memory techniques for students to learn; find out how to best support your son or daughter getting into University; helping your son to do better at school.

Please also remember that we have our Fashion Show on Friday, 26th Sep- tember. This was a superb evening two years ago, with shopping and a show, all enjoyed with a glass of fizz. Tickets are available from the school office – they are limited so I would get yours now!

A separate letter has been sent home asking for your help at the Craft Fayre on Sunday, October 12th. Please do all you can to attend it as it’s always a nice event. I’d particularly value lots of raffle prizes and cakes, which can be delivered to school beforehand. It’s one of the ways we can help to raise funds for the school.

I also wanted to thank and recognise the work that all our staff did with Ac- tivities Week at the end of term. The students had a brilliant time and many staff gave up their own time to organise trips or and long day trips. Particular thanks go to Miss Gilmour for all her work organising the whole week.

13 FORUM

There are two other things to bring to your attention. En- closed with this letter is a flyer about our campaign to raise money to support a wonderful Year 9 student, Miles Alder. Miles has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a degenerative ill- ness for which there is no cure. He has outgrown his wheel- chair and desperately needs a new one which will make a sig- nificant difference to the quality of his life. We need to raise £16,000 to help his family. In addition to all our fundraising events, I am hoping that those parents who can afford it might be willing to make a donation. All the details are on the flyer – please also keep a look out for events this term.

One of these will be our Centenary Evening on October 21st. This year, rather than having just a Focus Fortnight, we are having events and activities throughout the term based on ‘Reflection and Resolution’ – it is intended to link with the Cen- tenary of World War One. On October 21st we are having a cabaret style evening of wonderful music, dance, drama and prose. A variety of students (and staff!) will be performing and there will be a bar. Tickets are free but there will be donations for ‘Miles’s Chair’. Please do your very best to support it – it should be lovely and is a completely new venture for us and I really want it to be a success. It should be perfect for all ages from 8 to 80 plus!

I look forward to seeing you at one of our events – hopefully all of them!

Best wishes

Ms Sue Hargadon Headteacher

Events/Activities To Look Out For

The Parent Pack will be on the website shortly. It contains lots of useful information and you are advised to look through this carefully. You will be sent a letter about it with a form to complete about a variety of issues. Please phone my PA, Mrs Berriman if you would like a paper copy. In Year 8 we are going to have a volunteer to help each day with the office staff and to greet visitors. This will only happen once in the year. If you don’t want your child, should he or she be chosen, to be taken out of lessons for one day a year, please let the school office know. Our “Recognising Success” booklet for 2013-14 will be distrib- uted to the students in the next three weeks. The late bus arrangements start week beginning September 15th. They will be available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings but they offer a limited service covering the school catchment area only. There is no charge as the school pays for these. There is an SEN Parents Information event on Wednesday 17th September. This is by invitation only and letters have been sent out. The FHSF AGM takes place on September 18th at 7.00 pm. It includes wine and nibbles and workshops on a variety of topics. Year 12 Induction Day outing to Mersea Camp is on September 25th. The FHSF Fashion Show is on September 26th. Tickets are on sale from the office. The German Exchange students arrive from Germany on Octo- ber 1st and stay until October 8th. Our Open Evening will be held on Thursday, October 2nd from 6.00 pm. The FHSF Craft Fayre is on Sunday, October 12th. The Year 10 Information Evening for parents/carers will be on October 16th.

15 FORUM Year 13 students who are applying to university should be working on their personal statements by now and should be completing their application forms. The deadline for completion of these is October 24th unless students have spoken to Mr Piddington or Ms Tyndale-Hardy regarding an extension to attend an open day in half-term. For those ap- plying to Oxbridge or for medicine/dentistry/veterinary practice, the deadline is September 19th. Our Centenary Commemoration Evening event takes place on October 21st at 7.00pm.
