  • Robert Bell, Printer
ROBERT BELL, PRINTER Not quite two years since, in the spring of 1906, the writer came across an item relating to Robert Bell, a Quaker city printer of the later Colo- nial period, whose brilliancy of career was unearthed in detail mainly through a business deal we noted he was to have had with Lancaster's prominent townsman, Edward Ship- pen; and there is so much of general as well as some local interest at- tached to Bell's life that it is now and here presented to our Historical So- ciety as a valuable addition to eastern Pennsylvania history. Some one whose identity has not been revealed states, in the Master Printer, that "Robert Bell's very name is forgotten, and only recalled when one of his publications is found in the auction room or on the second-hand stalls. To the world at large Frank- lin's name stands alone in represent- ing the Philadelphia printer, while that of Bell is as dead as the world's indifference can make it." We shall endeavor to bring his work back to life. Bell practically began his publishing career where the famous Franklin left off, and from then on really issued and sold a larger variety if not more books than his philosophic predeces- sor. The period of hie activity ranges from 1768 to 1784. Bell was in Phila- delphia prior to the former date, prob- ably as early as 1765. He was a re- puted Scotchman, and supposed by one authority to have been a partner of George Alexander Stevens, coming to Philadelphia in 1766.

  • Robert Graves the White Goddess
ROBERT GRAVES THE WHITE GODDESS IN DEDICATION All saints revile her, and all sober men Ruled by the God Apollo's golden mean— In scorn of which I sailed to find her In distant regions likeliest to hold her Whom I desired above all things to know, Sister of the mirage and echo. It was a virtue not to stay, To go my headstrong and heroic way Seeking her out at the volcano's head, Among pack ice, or where the track had faded Beyond the cavern of the seven sleepers: Whose broad high brow was white as any leper's, Whose eyes were blue, with rowan-berry lips, With hair curled honey-coloured to white hips. Green sap of Spring in the young wood a-stir Will celebrate the Mountain Mother, And every song-bird shout awhile for her; But I am gifted, even in November Rawest of seasons, with so huge a sense Of her nakedly worn magnificence I forget cruelty and past betrayal, Careless of where the next bright bolt may fall. FOREWORD am grateful to Philip and Sally Graves, Christopher Hawkes, John Knittel, Valentin Iremonger, Max Mallowan, E. M. Parr, Joshua IPodro, Lynette Roberts, Martin Seymour-Smith, John Heath-Stubbs and numerous correspondents, who have supplied me with source- material for this book: and to Kenneth Gay who has helped me to arrange it. Yet since the first edition appeared in 1946, no expert in ancient Irish or Welsh has offered me the least help in refining my argument, or pointed out any of the errors which are bound to have crept into the text, or even acknowledged my letters.

I think I will always harbor this anxiety, but I have been blessed with mentors, colleagues, friends, and family members who have known how to couch their criticism in kindness and without whom I could never have summoned the courage to keep this work up or to set these words down. The germs for this book’s ideas began many years ago, when, as an under- graduate at Harvard, I stumbled somewhat accidentally (to fulfill a require- ment) into Lynn Festa’s course on “Sex and Sensibility during the Enlighten- ment.” Thank goodness for requirements.

The first great wave of adaptations of Shakespeare came after the period of the closing of theatres in 1642, with the advent of the Restoration in 1660. Political change was accompanied by a radical change in tastes, ideals and conditions: theatres were roofed in and artificially illuminated (like the earlier private theatres); there was also elaborate changeable scenery; and for the first time female roles were taken by professional actresses. Most importantly, French neo-classicism was adopted as the fashionable theory that shaped both the form and the language of plays. These currents of change motivated playwrights and managers to “improve on” Shakespeare by rewriting and staging his plays in accordance with the spirit of the new times.

  • ABSTRACT ANDERSON, JENNIFER. Author's Choice
ABSTRACT ANDERSON, JENNIFER. Author’s Choice: The Relevance of Author as Casting Director on the Restoration Stage. (Under the direction of Dr. John Morillo.) During the Restoration playwrights were often able to act as directors when their works reached the stage. Playwrights were also very public about their intentions within their plays: the attitudes they wished the audience to take and the emotions they hoped their works to instill. As a result, we are able to examine the author/director’s choice of cast and determine how those choices were intended to directly affect interpretation. With the loss of a play’s original cast, much of the author’s intent was lost. John Dryden wrote his story of Antony and Cleopatra, All For Love, as a tragedy, with the intent of evoking the pity of the audience. His choice of cast for the play’s premiere in 1677 reflects this intent. Though the play was still highly popular in 1718, the changing cast had counteracted the intended pity. In 1696, Sir John Vanbrugh wrote The Relapse in response to Colley Cibber’s move toward sentimental comedy in Love’s Last Shift. Vanbrugh’s play immediately met criticism from moralists, and by the time of its performance in 1716 the changing cast indicated the first shift of many that took the play from a reaction against sentimental comedy to a specimen of the same. Dryden’s most extravagant heroic drama, The Conquest of Granada, used the personalities of its original cast to add depth to the play. By the play’s final production in 1709, the new cast was unable to sustain the claims and characterizations necessary to the genre.

Nussbaum, Chair This dissertation analyzes the unlicensed mixtures of tragedy and comedy that appeared in the playhouses, periodicals, and novels of the eighteenth century. Scholars have argued that in the Restoration’s coterie theaters, the Hegelian dialectic of tragicomedy functioned as a heuristic device for debates about political theory. “Mongrel forms” extends this premise, contending that by the turn into the eighteenth century, the tidiness of bipartite tragicomedy had been replaced by powerful ideas about generic contagion and corruption. For an increasingly bourgeois audience, tragicomic monsters and mongrels, widely derided by literary and dramatic critics, became associated less with debates about kingship and more closely aligned with a discourse on the perils and pleasures of different kinds of social mixing. As dramatic genres were mediated by live, feeling bodies, the “mongrelization” of tragedy and comedy created sites of contact in which social categories, such as race, class, gender and sexuality, could be contested or confirmed.
