Came to Mass. by 1637, removed to Wethersfield with first settlers, and apparently was dead by Feb. 1637/8, when the Conn. General Court ordered creditors to present claims. His widow married John Whitmore, who was of Wethersfield by, 1639, and the Whitmores removed in 1641 to Stamford, doubtless with the Jessup children. Here Whitmore was murdered by the Indians, Oct. 1648. In 1652, the widow Joanna Whitmore sold land in Stamford. In a court case 1657, it was testified that "Edward Jessup and his mother widdow Whitmore went from Stamford to live els- where". [New Haven Col. Rec.] Probable children: John, removed from Wethersfield to Stamford 1641, and to Southampton, L. I., by 1653. +Edward. A daughter, presumably, who m. John Burroughs. He was at Salem, Mass., by 1637; of Newtown, L. I., 1657, and d. Aug. 1678 ae. 61, having m. (2) widow Elizabeth Reed. Burroughs was THE FAMILIES OF OLD FAIRFIELD 337 called brother-in-law in will of Edward Jessup; who also gave a legacy to his cousin [niece] Johanna Burroughs. Note that the child Johanna was named after her grandmother. Jessup, Edward, s. of John. Magistrate at Newtown, 1659, 1660, 1661, 1662. Magistrate for Westchester, appointed by Conn. Leg., Oct. 1663, May 1664. Patentee, Westchester, 1666. In testimony taken 1672, he was referred to as an original lot- owner at Fairfield (1639). After his stepfather's death, he appears in Stamford records, 1649. The Fairfield land, he sold to Thomas Barlow before 1653. He was a pioneer of Newtown, L. I., 1652, and in 1661 bought land in Jamaica which was sold in 1691 by his son Edward of Fairfield. In 1663 he removed to Westchester, N. Y., where he d. in 1666. Will 6 Aug. 1666, proved 14 Nov. 1666; dau. Elizabeth Hunt; dau. Hannah Jessup (under 18); son Edward (under age); gr. child Mary Hunt; cousin Johanna Burroughs; to Derrick Gasson, a cow; to wife Elizabeth, Exec'x, most of Est.; over seers, Mr. Richard Cornhill, J. P., Mrs. Sarah Bridges, bro.-in- law John Burroughs, and Ralph Hunt. His widow Elizabeth m. in 1668, Robert Beacham of Fairfield and took her two younger children there with her. She was liv ing 25 Dec. 1690, when she conveyed to son Edward all her property. Edward Jessup of Fairfield conveyed right in cattle belonging to his father Jessup, to Thomas Hunt, Jr., 23 July 1682. A letter from Elizabeth Beacham to her son-in-law Thomas Hunt, Jr., 27 Mar. 1682, gave her son Edward power to dispose of any estate that belongs to him. "I give Edward power to dispose of any of my daughter Hannah's jades, for I have order from my son Joseph and his wife both." [Westchester Deeds.] Children: Elizabeth,* m. Thomas Hunt, Jr., of Westchester. Hannah, m. Joseph .f -l-Edward, b. abt. 1663. * Perhaps dau. of Edward by an earlier marriage. The other two children were certainly by Elizabeth, and apparently were some years younger than their sister. t The Jessup Genealogy suggests that Hannah may have been wife of Joseph Lock- wood, which would make her stepdau. instead of actual dau. of Robert Beacham (see his will). This is a plausible theory, but evidence is insufficient to substantiate it. 338 HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF Jessup, Edward, s. of Edward. Born about 1663, d. at Stamford, 28 Dec. 1732 in 70 yr. (g. s.). Aged 29, he testified 1692 in Disbrow witchcraft trial. He m. (2) Elizabeth Hide, dau. of John, b. 23 Aug. 1668. She renewed her Covenant at Fairfield Church, 13 Sept. 1696; d. at Stamford, 2 Oct. 1747 in 79 yr. (g. s.). Will 17 Aug. 1731, proved 5 Jan. 1732/3; wife Elizabeth; sons Joseph (Exec'r), Jonathan; daus. Hannah, Elizabeth; son Ebenezer; daus. Abilene, Deborah, Sarah. The son Jonathan, and John Reynolds who m. a dau., appealed 5 Feb. 1733; but on 20 Feb. joined with John Smith and Elizabeth his wife in quit claiming all right in Est. to the Exec'r. Abilene receipted 1734 for her bequest. Elizabeth Jessup of Stamford, will 15 Sept. 1747, proved 6 Oct. 1747; sons Edward and Joseph; daus. Abilene, Deborah, Sarah, who (called "my three daughters") were to have residue; gr. dau. Elizabeth Darling. Children [by first wife]: Jonathan, d. at Greenwich in 1757; adm'n granted to Sarah, 2 Aug. 1757; m. Sarah , who m. (2) Timothy Knapp. The will of Jonathan Husted of Greenwich, 1705, gave to cousin Jonathan Jessup, "now dwelling with me", half his estate; and in 1711 Husted's widow conveyed to cousin Jonathan Jessup, "now living with me", lands in Greenwich and Stamford. The will of Jabez Sherwood of Greenwich, 1704, gave lands to Jonathan Husted and his wife; and to Jonathan Jessup, son of Edward of Fair field, his carpenter's tools, and his hat.* Hannah, b. [say 1692]; m. John Reynolds, of Greenwich. Elizabeth, b. (rec. Greenfield) 11 Feb. 1693 [1693/4]; m. Aug. 1710, John Smith. Children [by second wife], bapt. at Fairfield Church: Abilene, bapt. 13 Sept. 1696; m. John Darling. XEdward, bapt. 7 Mar. 1696/7, d. at Westport, 30 Sept. 1750 in 54 yr. (g. s.) ; m. (rec. Fairfield) 7 Dec. 1724, Sarah Blackleach. She was dau. of Richard, 2d, b. abt. 1700, d. 18 Nov. 1783 in 84 yr. (g. s.). Edward received by deed his father's homestead at Maximus [Westport]. * It is clear from these wills that Jonathan Jessep cannot be identified with the son bapt. 1707, and the excellent Jessup Genealogy errs in this particular. We know that Jonathan was under 21 in 1705 and should guess, from the terms of the wills, that he was born not later than 1690. His mother may have been a dau. of Angel Husted, and he was adopted by his childless uncle Jonathan Husted, for whom he was prob. named. THE FAMILIES OF OLD FAIRFIELD 339 Joseph, bapt. 4 June 1699, d. at Montreal, Canada, in 1778 ae. 79; m. at Stamford, 14 Aug. 1734, Abigail James; she was dau. of Henry, and d. 6 May 1743 in [ ] yr.
