We recently found the grave of our great=grandfather, Jediah IRISH HAMILTON, after locating a copy of the local history book for a small town in Kansas. On contacting the writer of the book, we wondered if she would take a photo of his grave---there were several references to him in her book. She sent several photos and mentioned that the monument was in need of repair and that, since this was a small community, upkeep of the plots was the responsibility of the families. This particular stone was broken off at the base and was lying on the ground. The historian located a stone-mason who made the necessary repairs which gives this writer much satisfaction, knowing that the stone will last for another eighty years, at least! Contacting a local historical society can give you help in learning more about your ancestor's gravesite and knowing that the stones are not broken or defaced can give you much satisfaction. Vol VIII no 2 89 CORRECTIONS TO CEMETERY BOOK "Livermore Cemeteries", Livermore, California 94550 There have been found several typographical errors in the Cemetery book and they may be corrected as such: Index to St. Michael's - Page 17 (name - Beraudlere to Beraudiere Index to Memory Gardens - Page 43 (name - Hohn to Holm Page 31 of St. Michael's - (name - Beraudlere to Beraudiere Page 28 of Memory Gardens - (name Hohn to Holm We are sorry for these errors and hope you will correct your copy. Editor +++++++++++++++++++++++T+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++T+++++++++++++++++++++ Have you seen the "Plant a Tree" campaign being sponsored nationally by the AARP and the United State Postal Service? Free fill-in-the-blank family tree charts are now in post offices across the country. Posters are also available, and the aim is to encourage children, parents and grandparents to exchange letters about family roots and family history. Postmaster General Anthony M. FRANK notes that many families in our mobile society have sep arated and children are growing up without the knowledge of family background and place in history. c. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ In 1670~ John NIXON, Secretary to the Council of Albemarle Precinct of North Carolina, made a deposition. Within that 300 year-old deposition, . couched in the language of the day, one finds an amazingly "modern" expression. The deposition, which John NIXON made concerned a conversation he heard between two men, follows: liThe deposition of John Nixon aged 54 years or thereabouts, being at ye House of Francis Godfrey did heare a discussion between one Patrick Jackson and Thomas Miller about the sd Jackson going to Virginia ye sd Miller did affirme that Jackson was to inform Mr. Drummond on ye afares of our country or words to yt purpose ye sd Jackson sd yt he would lade his Sacramt yet it was not soe ye sd Miller sd yt hee looked on his Sacramt to be but a prcell of Hoggs wash or words to yt purpose and further sd flOt. JOHN and JANE MATHEW. He was most likely named, as the second son, after his mother’s surname. This seems to be a custom that appears among landed gentry and in several St. John generations. The first son is usually named after the paternal family by either taking the father or grandfather or current tenement-in- chief’s name and the second son takes the mother’s surname as a first name. With his father, Thomas, being a younger son himself, his marriage to the female heir of the Mathew family offered Thomas or one of his sons a greater chance of rising himself to tenant-in-chief of the Mathew estate.

The genealogical registers are very imperfect ; and if any fami- lies are omitted, it is because they were not put upon the public re- cords and because the ; compiler, after repeatedly advertising, and alter some months' delay, has failed to obtain them.

  • East Norwalk Historical Cemetery
Welcome to the Self-Guided Tour of the East Norwalk Historical Cemetery Please take this packet with you as you stroll around this Ancient Burial Ground containing some of Norwalk’s First Settlers, Brave Soldiers, Religious Leaders, Notable Individuals and Generations of Plain Citizen of Norwalk, Connecticut. There is a lot going on here, and a lot of history to be preserved. Please show proper respect and watch your step on the uneven ground. The first thing you may notice is a number of tipped or broken stones: While from time to time there have been occasional acts of vandalism, much of what you see is the result of natural settling, overgrown trees and shrubs, and the effects of the environment on ancient stone. Rest assured that work is underway, through the efforts of the Third Taxing District Commission (TTD) and the East Norwalk Historical Cemetery Association (ENHCA), to right, repair, preserve and maintain these monuments. We are working with experts in the specialized field of Gravestone Preservation to allow these markers to last for generations to come. Also be aware that much of the unevenness of the ground is the result of early burial practices. Unlike modern concrete vaults, as caskets and remains returned to the earth, the soil settled above them leaving uneven ground. Some Cemetery Preservationists believed that the ground should remain as is. Something else that stands out is the American Flags in numerous stones: These flags honor the contribution of the many brave soldiers who have served our country, (some before this was a country) from “Indian” battles down through many wars and conflicts since, including The Revolution and the Civil War.
