The picture shows José Saramago who has just received from the hands of the Swedish King, the literature prize for 1998. Additional Nobel Prizes include awards for Physics, Chemistry, Physiology, Medicine and the Peace Prize. Since 1964 a prize in Economy established in memory of Alfred Nobel, has been donated by the Bank of Sweden. This elegantly renovated school house HANSSON is now one of Sweden’s top conference installations. This is where the major LARS part of the IJCAI-99 conference will take place. Stockholm’s City Hall is located in the center of town on the shore of Lake Mälaren. City Hall is where Stockholm’s political leadership work. Here you can also find large, exclusive recep- tion rooms. The largest are “Blå Hallen” (The Blue Lounge) and “Gyllene Salen” (The Golden Room). City Hall was built during 1911-1923. IJCAI participants are invited to attend a reception in Blå Hallen on August 2. ASPLUND JAN A view of the Vaxholm Fortress and the island Vaxholmen in the inner part of the Stockholm Archipelago. One of the two sea routes to Stockholm is by way of Vaxholmen, which is why in ancient days, it was of great importance for the defense of Stockholm. The fortress tower was built as early as 1560. If you want to experience the water way into Stockholm, a part of Stockholms history as well as have an exciting evening, register for the IJCAI-99 Dinner August 4. It will be held at the Vaxholm Fortress.     Translator’s Comments and Observations In translating Carl Roos‟ Civil War Diary, I have attempted to be as faithful to Mr. Roos‟ style and his nuances as far as possible. I have however taken the liberty to make it flow and be readable to the present day American reader. Where I have changed and/or added words or text, I have enclosed such additions in bracket as such []. Where Carl Roos used English words, I have followed the same with (sic). Where I am in doubt about a word, I enclose the translation in ??. Roos also has frequently capitalized such words as “Camp”, “Overcoat”, “Regiment”, etc. and I have retained his capitalization. However, he frequently did not capitalize words that generally are capitalized in English, and so I have taken the liberty of doing so. He especially did not capitalized peoples titles. I have done this. In Sweden, titles were and are still very important. In Section 16, Mr. Roos claims to have only several weeks of formal education during his youth. This is conceivable, but generally and in even the most rural of Swedish parishes, children attended school for several years, although the school year was generally short, being four to five weeks during the winter season. In the Clerical Survey or annual parish census known as the “husförhör”, everyone, adult and child, was questioned as to their ability to read, write, figure and comprehend. As these “förhör” were public events, there was probably an incentive for people to try to master “the reading, writing and arithmetic” to avoid embarrassment.

A few light rays from the barred window penetrate an otherwise dark room, barely reaching the wooden desk placed in the centre of the cell. Blonde, bearded, and with a face clearly marked by the march of history, the prisoner sitting at the desk is Johan Klasson Tay, or as he is better known to us, Johan Vilde – translation: John Savage. Although his gaze is as heavy as the chains around his ankles, the detainee is working from dusk to dawn, defying an aching body and the biting cold from the north winds that refrigerate the prison. As he scribbles it down with a quill on the piece of paper in front of him, Johan Klasson Tay invites us to share in his story – a biographical account that will not only provide an answer to the question of why he is imprisoned, but will explain how he acquired such an unflattering alias, associated with a lack of civilised, modern and cultivated manners.
