Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

It nowadays publishes literature in the fields of ethnology and folkloristics, linguistics, literary research and cultural history. The first volume of the Studia Fennica series appeared in 1933. Since 1992, the series has been divided into three thematic subseries: Ethnologica, Folkloristica and Linguistica. Two additional subseries were formed in 2002, Historica and Litteraria. The subseries Anthropologica was formed in 2007. BY SOPHIE CAMPBELL. PHOTOGRAPHS BY YADID LEVY The fishing village of Reine, on Moskenesøya in the Lofoten Islands 90 f you are a cod, these are the killing fields. Bunches of drying fish twist in the wind on birch frames the size of Dutch barns, and chunky working boats bristle with radar, net winches and fish-finding gear. If you are an artist, this is a land of light, clear and simple, which is why so many have made their way here in the past century and a half. If you are a visitor, this is where mountains shoot Iout of the sea like fins, their reflections diving to unfathomable depths in the fjords, and sweet little wooden houses cluster in shades of lemon and dove and brick and sky. But you mustn’t look too hard in case you fly off roads raised to let meltwater flow away and edged only with flimsy red poles. The Lofoten Islands barely qualify as an archipelago. They are more like a vestigial tail off the coast of Norway, 100km above the Arctic Circle and 230km south of Tromsø, connected to the mainland by a bridge about a kilometre long. More bridges swoop between the seven main islands, and around them skitter innumerable rocks and skerries. Fish is everywhere. It glints through the history and swims through the art. -

[1] We present the first comprehensive general circulation model study of water ice condensation and cloud formation in the Martian atmosphere. We focus on the effects of condensation in limiting the vertical distribution and transport of water and on the importance of condensation for the generation of the observed Martian water cycle. We do not treat cloud ice radiative effects, ice sedimentation rates are prescribed, and we do not treat interactions between dust and cloud ice. The model generates cloud in a manner consistent with earlier one-dimensional (1-D) model results, typically evolving a uniform (constant mass mixing ratio) vertical distribution of vapor, which is capped by cloud at the level where the condensation point temperature is reached. Because of this vertical distribution of water, the Martian atmosphere is generally very far from fully saturated, in contrast to suggestions based upon interpretation of Viking data. This discrepancy results from inaccurate representation of the diurnal cycle of air temperatures in the Viking Infrared Thermal Mapper (IRTM) data. In fact, the model suggests that only the northern polar atmosphere in summer is consistently near its column-integrated holding capacity. -

Scandinavica Vol 52 No 2 2013 Stockholm’s Archipelago and Strindberg’s: Historical Reality and Modern Myth-Making Massimo Ciaravolo University of Florence Abstract The Stockholm Archipelago is ubiquitous in the prose, poetry, drama and non-fiction of August Strindberg. This article examines the interaction in Strindberg’s oeuvre between the city of Stockholm as civilized space and the wild space surrounding it, tracing the development of a literary myth of Eden in his work. Strindberg’s representations of the shifting relations between city and nature, it is argued, played (and still play) an important role in the cultural construction of mythologies of the loss of the wild space. The environments described in Strindberg’s texts are subject to changes, shifts and repetitions with variations, such that the archipelago in itself can be read as a mirror of the polyphony of points of view, the variability and the ambiguities we find in his oeuvre at large. Trip to Lofoten
7ULSWR/RIRWHQ :KHQ29th June --- 5th July :KRXiaomeng, Jinghai and my colleague Darius couple. Starting from Trondheim, we drove our Toyota on a one-week trip along the northern part of Norway, to Lofoten and return. Lofoten is said to be one of Norway’s most scenic holiday des- tinations, where you can see towering mountains with pointed peaks standing right in the mid- dle of the sea. It is an archipelago in the ocean, north of the Article Circle. I will describe my journey in a considerably detailed way, so that others can follow some of the trip if they want to. In the summer, when the mid- night sun is there, it’s almost daylight all through the night, so we decided to drive all the way from Trondheim to Lofoten within one day. We started early morning in Trondheim, headed north on E6 towards Bodø. E6 is relatively easy to ride but still there are lots of turns in the mountain roads. The terrain is quite hilly and most of the time, we were either up or down the mountain. The landscape along the road was quite pleasant, green woods, wild flowers and snow mountain peaks. When we were approaching the Arctic Circle, the landscape changed into an untamed wideness. It was such a unique place, so we decided to have a stop over on our way back from Lofoten. We arrived in Bodø just at the right time for the afternoon ferry from Bodø to Moskenes, which is situated in the southern part of the lofoten islands. -

Stockholm Archipelago Raid 23rd to 26th of August 2018 NOTICE OF RACE Preliminary Introduction The Stockholm Archipelago Raid is a mix of sport, nature and adventure in the perfect F18-playground; the stunning Stockholm Archipelago. The archipelago consists of 36.000 rocks, skerries and islands and offers spectacular scenery and limitless possibilities for exceptional courses between the Check Points (CP’s) on islands, buoys, light houses and beaches. Each day the fleet typically sails between 50 and 100 NM depending on the winds. It is tight, intensive racing between CP’s during daytime, sometimes with an early start. After the race there is often time for a sauna and a beer before dinner. Since all sailors eat, live and share an adventure together for a couple of intensive days, the raid is a very social event, even if the competition is also present during races. To be able to host more teams and to keep participation costs as low as possible the teams can choose whether they want to bring a tent and sleeping bags or, at an extra cost, sleep in real beds with sheets. All meals are included and each evening after the race day there is a possibility to have a sauna before having dinner together in large tents or restaurants. Raids has been organized by the Swedish F18 Association under different names since 2010, for example Raid Revenge. Before that, from 2001 to 2009, Atlant Ocean racing organized the Archipelago Raid, an extreme race from Stockholm to Finland and back. Many sailors from all over the world has participated since 2001.
