Noctuidae (Insecto, Lepidoptera) by Vasily V. A n ik in , Sergey A. Sachkov , Va d im V. Z o lo t u h in & A n drey V. Sv ir id o v received 24.II.2000 Summary: 630 species of the Noctuidae are listed for the modern Volgo-Ural fauna. 2 species [Mesapamea hedeni Graeser and Amphidrina amurensis Staudinger ) are noted from Europe for the first time and one more— Nycteola siculana Fuchs —from Russia. 3 species ( Catocala optata Godart , Helicoverpa obsoleta Fabricius , Pseudohadena minuta Pungeler ) are deleted from the list. Supposedly they were either erroneously determinated or incorrect noted from the region under consideration since Eversmann 's work. 289 species are recorded from the re gion in addition to Eversmann 's list. This paper is the fifth in a series of publications1 dealing with the composition of the pres ent-day fauna of noctuid-moths in the Middle Volga and the south-western Cisurals. This re gion comprises the administrative divisions of the Astrakhan, Volgograd, Saratov, Samara, Uljanovsk, Orenburg, Uralsk and Atyraus (= Gurjev) Districts, together with Tataria and Bash kiria. As was accepted in the first part of this series, only material reliably labelled, and cover ing the last 20 years was used for this study. The main collections are those of the authors: V. • New Data on 38 Rare for the Lithuanian Fauna Lepidoptera Species Recorded in 2019
42 BULLETIN OF THE LITHUANIAN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY. Volume 3 (31) NEW DATA ON 38 RARE FOR THE LITHUANIAN FAUNA LEPIDOPTERA SPECIES RECORDED IN 2019 VYTAUTAS INOKAITIS, BRIGITA PAULAVIČIŪTĖ T. Ivanauskas Museum of Zoology, Laisvės al. 106 LT-44253 Kaunas, Lithuania. E-mail: [email protected] Introduction Lepidoptera is one of the most widespread and widely recognizable insect orders in the world. It can show many variations of the basic body structure that have evolved to gain advantages in lifestyle and distribution. We can find more than 180,000 species of Lepidoptera in the world, which belong to 126 families and 46 superfamilies (Mallet, 2007). There are 482 species in Europe, 451 of them being found in the 27 member states. Almost a third of these species (142 species) are endemic to Europe (Van Swaay et al., 2008). Today more than 2500 species of Lepidoptera are known in Lithuania. Every year new and rare species for Lithuania fauna are discovered (Ivinskis & Rimšaitė, 2018). This article presents new data on 38 rare for Lithuania moth and butterflies species. They were registered in 4 administrative districts of Lithuania. One species - Chariaspilates formosaria (Eversmann, 1837) is included in the Red Data Book of Lithuania (Rašomavičius, 2007). • The Apparent Influence of Climatic Change on Recent Changes of Range by European Insects (Lepidoptera, Orthoptera)
The apparent influence of climatic change on recent changes of range by European insects (Lepidoptera, Orthoptera) John F. Burton Abstract For several years I have been collecting data concerning changes in the ranges of European insects, especially Lepidoptera and Orthoptera. The vast majority of those species which have altered their ran- ges since 1850 have spread to the north, north-west or west (e.g. 96% of the Lepidoptera expanding their ranges). Of the smaller number of species where the range has contracted, the majority (e.g. 75% of the Lepidoptera) have retreated southwards, south-westwards or south-eastwards. I have attempted to correlate these range changes with the main climatic fluctuations from 1850 to the present. Throughout this long period of predominately warming climate in Europe, those insect spe- cies which have been expanding their ranges have done so in steadily increasing numbers, especially since 1975, thus coinciding with the marked increase in temperatures worldwide associated with the anthropogenic greenhouse effect. 104 NEW AND RARE FOR LITHUANIA INSECT SPECIES. Volume 21 TWO NEW AND 40 RARE FOR LITHUANIA LEPIDOPTERA SPECIES COLLECTED IN 2003–2009 POVILAS PAUKŠT Ė Department of Zoology, Vilnius University, Čiurlionio 21/27, LT-08412, Vilnius, Lithuania. E-mail: [email protected] Introduction This article presents data on new and rare for the Lithuanian fauna butterfly and moth species collected in southern Lithuania. The research site was chosen because of suitable conditions to perform long-term studies of Lepidoptera group. There was no similar research carried out by other authors in the described area, so this article should expand the knowledge about the distribution of rare Lepidoptera species in Lithuania. Material and Methods The material was collected by the author of this report in Var ėna administrative district, Daržininkai environs (Southern Lithuania) in 2003–2009. Moths were attracted to light using UV lamp bulb and sampled. Butterflies and some day-active moths were collected using a standard entomological net in a specified transects. Identification of the material was carried out using different sources (Kazlauskas, 1984; Koch, 1991; Fibiger, 1993; Nowacki, 1998; Ronkay et al ., 2001; Mironov, 2003). The nomenclature follows the Fauna Europaea database (Karsholt & Nieukerken, 2007). The majority of material is preserved in the author’s personal collection; some specimens are kept in the collection of the Museum of Zoology of Vilnius University, Lithuania. Species new for the Lithuanian fauna are marked with an asterisk (*). Available online at www.worldscientificnews.com WSN 99 (2018) 193-214 EISSN 2392-2192 Preliminary studies toward an effective Macrolepidoptera monitoring system in the forests of the Narew National Park, North-east Poland - ultraviolet vs. actinic light Heath traps João Matos da Costa Narew National Park, Kurowo 10, 18-204 Kobylin Borzymy, Poland E-mail address: [email protected] ABSTRACT To design a cost effective Macrolepidoptera monitoring system in the forests of the Narew National Park it is necessary to evaluate sampling methods. Light traps are one of most applied methods to survey moths and ultraviolet lamps are widely used. In this study I evaluate if the actinic light spectrum won’t provide better results. In six nights in six forest stands, two Heath traps were placed simultaneously, one with ultraviolet light and another with actinic light. The ultraviolet traps captured 162 individuals of 51 species while the actinic light traps captured 294 individuals of 60 species. The ANOVA test found no significant differences in the allocation of species and individuals per family among areas captured by the actinic (F = 0,2894, df = 5, p = 0,92; F = 0,2568, df = 5, p = 0,93) or by the ultraviolet (F = 0,4515, df = 5, p = 0,81; F = 0,61, df = 5, p = 0,69) Heath traps. Nevertheless the Shannon and the Margalef measures of biodiversity disclosed that the actinic light provides a better image of the moth communities present in the research areas. • Climate Change and Shifts in the Distribution of Moth Species in Finland, with a Focus on the Province of Kainuu
14 Climate Change and Shifts in the Distribution of Moth Species in Finland, with a Focus on the Province of Kainuu Juhani H. Itämies1, Reima Leinonen2 and V. Benno Meyer-Rochow3,4 1Kaitoväylä 25 A 6; SF-90570 Oulu; 2Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment for Kainuu, Kajaani, 3Faculty of Engineering and Sciences, Jacobs University Bremen, Research II, D-28759 4Bremen and Department of Biology; Oulu University; SF-90014 Oulu, 1,2,3Finland 4Germany 1. Introduction Distributions and abundances of insect species depend on a variety of factors, but whether we focus on food plants and availability, environmental niches and shelters, predators or parasites, by far the most important limiting factor is climate. Shifts in insect community structure have successfully been correlated with glacial and inter-glacial periods (Coope 1995; Ashworth 1997; Morgan 1997), but have also attracted the attention of researchers concerned with current climate trends. Parmesan (2001) and Forester et al. (2010) examined examples from North America and Europe and emphasized that predictions of responses to a warmer climate must incorporate observations on habitat loss or alteration, land management and dispersal abilities of the species in question. For the United Kingdom, Hill et al. (2001) have summarized data on changes in the distribution of specifically three butterfly species (Pararge aegeria, Aphantopus hyperantus, and Pyronia tithonus). These authors report that the three species have been shifting northward since the 1940s and they present maps of simulated butterfly distributions for the period 2070-2099, based on the changes seen since the 1940s. According to that scenario Iceland will see some colonies of these three species in less than a hundred years.

  • The Lepidoptera of Bucharest and Its Surroundings (Romania)
Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle © 30 Décembre Vol. LIV (2) pp. 461–512 «Grigore Antipa» 2011 DOI: 10.2478/v10191-011-0028-9 THE LEPIDOPTERA OF BUCHAREST AND ITS SURROUNDINGS (ROMANIA) LEVENTE SZÉKELY Abstract. This study presents a synthesis of the current knowledge regarding the Lepidoptera fauna of Bucharest and the surrounding areas within a distance up to 50 kilometers around the Romanian capital. Data about the fauna composition are presented: the results of the research work beginning with the end of the 19th century, as well the results of the research work carried out in the last 15 years. The research initiated and done by the author himself, led to the identification of 180 species which were unknown in the past. Even if the natural habitats from this region have undergone through radical changes in the 20th century, the area still preserves a quite rich and interesting Lepidoptera fauna. The forests provide shelter to rich populations of the hawk moth Dolbina elegans A. Bang-Haas, 1912, one of the rarest Sphingidae in Europe, and some other species with high faunistical and zoogeographical value as: Noctua haywardi (Tams, 1926) (it is new record for the Romanian fauna from this area), Catocala dilecta (Hübner, 1808), Tarachidia candefacta (Hübner, [1831]), Chrysodeixis chalcites (Esper, [1789]), Aedia leucomelas (Linnaeus, 1758), and Hecatera cappa (Hübner, [1809]). We also present and discuss the current status of the protected Lepidoptera species from the surroundings of the Romanian capital for the first time. Résumé. Ce travail représente une synthèse des connaissances actuelles concernant la faune de lépidoptères de Bucarest et de ses zones limitrophes sur un rayon de 50 km autour de la capitale de la Roumanie.
