Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland promotes the wellbeing of older people by helping to make later life fulfilling and enjoyable. We are a local, independent charity which fundraises across and Rutland and applies these funds to help anyone over 50 who needs our support.

We are committed to maintaining the dignity, privacy and independence of older people by providing a range of relevant services which meet the needs and wishes of Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland residents.

We offer a huge amount of free support for older people, their carers and families as well as services for which a competitive rate is charged.

Information, Advice & Advocacy Services We provide free, independent and confidential information and advice for people over 50, including practical help, suggesting ways to solve difficulties and giving you the details of others who may be able to help.

Residential & Nursing Home Advisory Service

Thinking about or planning a move into residential care for yourself or a loved one can be a worrying time for everyone involved - and if this is your first experience of residential care, finding out all you need to know can be daunting.

Our free, impartial and confidential advisory service can provide advice on a range of issues including:

 Choosing a care home  How your property and savings  Being assessed by social are affected services  Entitlement to state benefits  Paying for care whilst in residential care

We can also provide information on alternatives to full time residential care such as sheltered housing, wellbeing groups, respite care, home care and lunch clubs.

Independent Care Act Advocacy Service

We can provide Independent Care Act Advocacy to support and empower individuals, living in Leicestershire and Rutland, who have substantial difficulty in being involved in care and support processes and who have no appropriate person to support them.

The service operates on an open referral basis but, in the main, referrals will be received from Leicestershire and Rutland County Councils.

Leicester Royal Infirmary Information Centre

We have an Information Centre within the Leicester Royal Infirmary where hospital patients, their families and carers, and hospital staff can access free information, advice and support. The Information Centre is located on the Ground Floor in the Windsor Building opposite the Discharge Lounge.

Macmillan Cancer Support Service

In conjunction with Macmillan Cancer Support we are able to offer

support to older people who have been affected by cancer.

Working with older people and their carers we can provide:

 Support, information and advice at the most appropriate time

 Help with accessing practical support that will make it

possible for the older person to choose to remain in their own home  Signposting to other support services

Last Orders

The Last Orders Project is working across Leicester City, Leicestershire and Rutland to promote responsible drinking, giving people over the age of 50 easier access to various support services in relation to substance use. We also hold workshops with the main focus being alcohol measures and the affect which drinking alcohol, even in small doses can have on our bodies. To book a free workshop please contact us.

Support in the Community

Home Care

Our Home Care service provides a wide range of help and care to assist you to maintain your independence in the community and to stay living in your own home. We can offer support with housekeeping including cleaning , laundry, ironing and shopping, as well as meal preparation, pet care, support with medication and personal care. We also offer companionship services and can provide you with company at home or help to access your local community.

Befriending Home Visits, Mentoring & Telephone Befriending

Our Befriending services support older people who may be lonely or socially isolated and would benefit from a friendly face calling in on a regular basis at a mutually convenient day and time. The schemes are free to use but our funding currently limits the visiting service to Rutland, Charnwood, North West Leicestershire and Leicester City. Older people who live alone in these areas are eligible for the Befriending Service which can be accessed by older people using the contacts below or by referral from social services, health professionals and other voluntary sector organisations. The Leicester City service is part of the Leicester Ageing Together initiative and also offers Mentoring and free Telephone Befriending calls.

Rutland Macmillan Volunteer Befriending Project

In partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support the service is available to anyone over the age of 18 who has been affected by cancer. Support is available at whatever stage of the cancer journey you are at.

Men in Sheds

Our Men's Shed is a place for men to feel at home and pursue practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. Men in Sheds members share tools and resources to work on projects of their own choosing, at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. Our Sheds offer a place for skill-sharing and informal learning, individual pursuits and community projects. It’s a place of leisure where men come together to work.

Women in Sheds

Building on the success of the Shed and in response to local demand, we also offer a Women in Sheds project to open up this creative space to women who would like to share tools and resources in working on projects of their own choosing, at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. Our Shed is a place for skill sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. It’s a venue for women to get stuck into hobbies old and new, get creative and make new friendships.

Joining Forces

In partnership with SSAFA, this tailor made service provides the support you would like for veterans born before 1950, their widows/ widowers, families or people who care for Veterans.

We can support you with:

Gardening & Handyman Service

It can be difficult to find tradesmen to do small jobs around the house and to be confident that they are competent and their charges are fair. Our DBS (was CRB) checked handymen and gardeners will help you with what you need, when you need it. From hand rails to curtain rails, and decorating to home security as well as mowing, hedge trimming, weeding, pruning and shed painting in the garden.

Leicester Ageing Together Projects.

These Big Lottery funded projects support the over 50’s living in Thurncourt, Spinney Hills, Evington, Belgrave and Wycliffe wards. They also support residents of the City wards who are housebound, have recently been discharged from hospital, have African or Caribbean heritage, or experience hearing loss. Direct enquiries are welcomed from anyone who would like our help to improve social opportunities for themselves and their community.

Anything Goes

This project helps disadvantaged and vulnerable older people who are socially isolated and lonely or at risk of becoming so. It brings together small groups of older people and works with them to design bespoke activities that help them remain connected to their local community.

Loneliness Prescription Service

Working with local GP’s we help people to overcome loneliness and social isolation issues. Life changing events, such as becoming housebound, bereavement or a change in health or ability to get out and about, can disconnect people from the outside world. We offer the one-to-one support of somebody to chat to and can also provide information of what’s happening in the local area and help people to pursue an interest of their choice.

Digital Champions

Our Digital Champions project helps older people to get online confidently, safely and to benefit from the advantages of digital technology that most of us take for granted. The project helps older people understand why they should get online and show them how.

Community Resource Centres (see centre pages for locations & hours)

Our Resource Centres provide a community focal point and a range of services and activities. Located in , and in Leicester at Humberstone Gate and Evington Road, they offer some or all of the following: day care , classes and social activities, restaurant, insurance office, information and advice surgeries, computer suite, hairdressing.

We have local offices in , , Loughborough, Oakham and . Staff in these offices arrange and run a range of activities and support opportunities including information & advice, lunch clubs, social groups, drop-in coffee mornings and exercise classes, such as yoga, Tai Chi and line dancing. We will be offering befriending, activities and information and advice in Charnwood. To find out what is available in each area, please contact the local office.

Health & Wellbeing Services

Day Care Our Day Care groups offer companionship and support for older people with a wide range of abilities and disabilities, including physical frailty, mental health issues and dementia. As well as being able to meet and socialise with friends, our clients benefit from a variety of activities, local excursions and visiting entertainers. We offer refreshments and a hot meal as well as transport to and from the group if required. We have groups in 16 town and village locations across the counties from Uppingham to Moira, to Melton Mowbray, with 8 locations within Leicester city and its suburbs. We welcome new clients through assessment and referral by social services, as well as those contacting us directly to attend on a self-funding basis. Free taster sessions are available on request. Daybreak Community Groups Daybreak groups meet in the homes of host carers to suit the needs of older people living in rural locations. These groups offer social activities and a hot meal to clients but in a more intimate setting and within a smaller group. Currently, we have Daybreak groups in on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Lunch Clubs

Lunch clubs offer the chance to socialise and enjoy lunch with friends on a weekly or monthly basis. They are tailored to the needs of clients who are physically active but may be at risk of becoming socially isolated.

We offer a hot meal and can cater for most dietary requirements (e.g. vegetarian, diabetic) as well as any cultural preferences.

Our clubs are held at Leicester City, Market Harborough, Melton, Oakham, Sapcote, Uppingham, Whissendine and, to meet the needs of our culturally diverse communities, at Birstall, Evington and Loughborough. Please call for details of these locations and timings of our lunch clubs.

West Leicestershire Health & Wellbeing Project

This project works with older people to promote healthy, active lifestyles through access to high quality information, advice and activities that support physical, mental, emotional and material wellbeing.

Three office hubs, in Loughborough, Hinckley and Coalville, each offers a unique range of support which reflects the needs and preferences of the local community in each area.

Activities include social outings, lunch trips, local activities, exercise classes, walks, healthy life choices and falls prevention workshops.

Support for Carers

Respite Care

Our Home Care service can provide respite care to allow you some time for yourself to recharge your batteries or manage other aspects of your life.

Our staff are appropriately trained and are experienced in caring for older people, including people with dementia, meaning you can have a break in the knowledge that your loved one is being provided with the same attentive, thoughtful and compassionate care that you would provide yourself.

Please see our Home Care information on page 14 for more information about this service which can meet the care needs of your loved one 7 days a week on either a regular basis or as required.

These services can provide drop in groups, carers wellbeing breaks, information and advice, peer support and training. Rutland Carers Support Group

This group is suitable for anyone who cares for someone with a long-term illness e.g. M.S, Dementia, Stroke etc. Meeting on the 2nd Monday of the month, the group is held at the Community Rooms at St John and St Anne from 1:45pm - 3:15pm.

A packed programme of speakers and activities is offered to cater to all tastes, including a lunch trip out.

Living with Dementia

Rutland Dementia Support Service

Our Dementia Support service in Rutland offers support for those living with dementia and their carers and actively promotes the wellbeing of those living with dementia through one to one support and group activities.

Activities for those living with early Dementia

Activities to support those with early dementia and their carers provide an opportunity to meet in an understanding environment which enables relaxed socialising with people who share similar circumstances.

Activities in the Hinckley area include Forget-me-not, an activities, crafts and sing-along café in Newbold Verdon and . A Singing Café (not run by Age UK) is also available in Hinckley. In Charnwood, activities include dementia walks and seated exercise, please call
