This cross is from the end of the 19th Century and is not a transformed Knights cross as no traces of soldering can be seen at the places where the laurel wreath would have been attached. The CHELSEA safety pin on the reverse was attached before the enamel was applied which clearly indicates that this cross was intended to be worn as a brooch. Because the Order began to admit ladies just a few years ago MILITARY this particular cross might have been a special award, (out side of the statutes) by the Pope to a Lady.
