The Albanian-American Community in the United States : A Diaspora Coming to Visibility 1 Nadège Ragaru and Amilda Dymi * The Albanian-American community in the United States became visible at the time of the NATO intervention in Kosovo in the Spring of 1999. The US government had promised to shelter 20,000 Kosovars expelled from their homeland by Serb-dominated Yugoslav forces (Michael Kranish and Mary Leonard, 1999). As refugees hit American soil, stories of family reunion and community solidarity were told in the local and national press. True, there had been earlier rallies in Washington organized by Albanian-American organizations that had hinted at the wish, on the part of the Albanian immigrants, to weigh upon US foreign policy towards the Balkans.

  • Introducing Civil Law Students to Common Law Legal Method Through Contract Law
641 Introducing Civil Law Students to Common Law Legal Method Through Contract Law Charles R. Calleros I. Introduction The Common Law Program at Université René Descartes in Paris introduces students trained in the civil law to common law doctrine and legal method through a series of English-language mini-courses offered every other week by visiting faculty from common law countries throughout the world. Beginning in the 2001–02 academic year through Fall, 2007, I had the honor and pleasure of teaching the opening course in this program.1 My pedagogic goals in this course included: • Introduce the students to fundamental elements of common law legal method in order to better prepare them for all the common law courses; • Use the issue of reciprocal inducement, within the common law doctrine of consideration, as both a vehicle for developing facility with legal method and as an exercise in comparative law; and • Expose students to both traditional and innovative American teaching techniques, as a further means of providing students with a comparative experience. To meet these goals, I led the students in a number of interactive exercises, some of them set in non-legal contexts so that the students focused all their attention on the legal method those exercises illustrated. Whether set in legal or non-legal contexts, these exercises required students to recognize and accept uncertainty in legal disputes, appreciate the role of stare decisis, and develop opposing arguments from facts and precedent. Others who teach the common law method to students from other legal traditions, either abroad or in U.S.

  • Carolingian Uncial: a Context for the Lothar Psalter
CAROLINGIAN UNCIAL: A CONTEXT FOR THE LOTHAR PSALTER ROSAMOND McKITTERICK IN his famous identification and dating ofthe Morgan Golden Gospels published in the Festschrift for Belle da Costa Greene, E. A. Lowe was quite explicit in his categorizing of Carolingian uncial as the 'invention of a display artist'.^ He went on to define it as an artificial script beginning to be found in manuscripts of the ninth century and even of the late eighth century. These uncials were reserved for special display purposes, for headings, titles, colophons, opening lines and, exceptionally, as in the case ofthe Morgan Gospels Lowe was discussing, for an entire codex. Lowe acknowledged that uncial had been used in these ways before the end of the eighth century, but then it was * natural' not 'artificial' uncial. One of the problems I wish to address is the degree to which Frankish uncial in the late eighth and the ninth centuries is indeed 'artificial' rather than 'natural'. Can it be regarded as a deliberate recreation of a script type, or is it a refinement and elevation in status of an existing book script? Secondly, to what degree is a particular script type used for a particular text type in the early Middle Ages? The third problem, related at least to the first, if not to the second, is whether Frankish uncial, be it natural or artificial, is sufficiently distinctive when used by a particular scriptorium to enable us to locate a manuscript or fragment to one atelier rather than another. This problem needs, of course, to be set within the context of later Carolingian book production, the notions of 'house' style as opposed to 'regional' style and the criteria for locating manuscript production to particular scriptoria in the Frankish kingdoms under the Carolingians that I have discussed elsewhere." It is also of particular importance when considering the Hofschule atehers ofthe mid-ninth century associated with the Emperor Lothar and with King Charles the Bald.

  • Sulayman Al-Bassam's Richard III and Political Theatre
From Summit to Tragedy: Sulayman Al-Bassam’s Richard III and Political Theatre GRAHAM HOLDERNESS Richard III is one of Shakespeare’s best-known characters, a familiarity independent of the history plays, Henry VI and Richard III, in which he appears.1 This celebrity has less to do with Richard’s historical reputation, and more with the way in which great actors of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries gave the role status and popular visibility, particularly perhaps via Laurence Olivier’s 1955 fi lm version.2 Just as Hamlet is automatically identifi able by black suit and prop skull, Richard is immediately recognisable by his legendary deformity (mandatory hump, optional limp), and by the famous opening line of his initial soliloquy: ‘Now is the winter of our discontent’. The phrase has also, of course, escaped from Richard, as he escapes from the play: it was much used in Britain during the successive years of bitter labour dispute in the early 1970s, becoming inseparable from an environment of strikes, picket lines and power cuts. But it still belongs to Richard. When Peter Sellers guested on The Muppet Show, he delivered ‘the soliloquy from Richard III’ (with a distinct resemblance to Olivier), ‘whilst (and at the same time) playing tuned chickens’.3 Spectators of Sulayman Al-Bassam’s adaptation of Richard III, An Arab Tragedy, performed at the Swan Theatre in Stratford in February 2007, encounter from the outset an immediate disruption of convention and expectation, since the fi rst person on the stage, the fi rst to speak, is not Richard at all, but a woman, Queen Margaret.

Cristian, Réka M.. “The Life and Times of Karola Szilvássy, A Transylvanian Aristocrat and Modern Woman.” Hungarian Cultural Studies. e-Journal of the American Hungarian Educators Association, Volume 12 (2019) DOI: 10.5195/ahea.2019.359 The Life and Times of Karola Szilvássy, Transylvanian Aristocrat and Modern Woman* Réka M. Cristian Abstract: In this study Cristian surveys the life and work of Baroness Elemérné Bornemissza, née Karola Szilvássy (1876 – 1948), an internationalist Transylvanian aristocrat, primarily known as the famous literary patron of Erdélyi Helikon and lifelong muse of Count Miklós Bánffy de Losoncz, who immortalized her through the character of Adrienne Milóth in his Erdélyi trilógia [‘The Transylvanian Trilogy’]. Research on Karola Szilvássy is still scarce with little known about the life of this maverick woman, who did not comply with the norms of her society. She was an actress and film director during the silent film era, courageous nurse in the World War I, as well as unusual fashion trendsetter, gourmet cookbook writer, Africa traveler—in short, a source of inspiration for many women of her time, and after. Keywords: Karola Szilvássy, Miklós Bánffy, János Kemény, Zoltán Óváry, Transylvanian aristocracy, modern woman, suffrage, polyglot, cosmopolitan, Erdélyi Helikon Biography: Réka M. Cristian is Associate Professor, Chair of the American Studies Department, University of Szeged, and Co-chair of the university’s Inter-American Research Center. She is author of Cultural Vistas and Sites of Identity: Literature, Film and American Studies (2011), co-author (with Zoltán Dragon) of Encounters of the Filmic Kind: Guidebook to Film Theories (2008), and general editor of AMERICANA E-Journal of American Studies in Hungary, as well as its e-book division, AMERICANA eBooks.
