The 2017 Fenman Classic bike show was our biggest show ever and over its twenty nine years of taking place in the village of Wimbotsham it has raised a fantas c £125,000 all for local chari es. This year we are dona ng a total of £10,000 to local chari es and we are very pleased that we are able donate £1000 to the East Anglia Air Ambulance. The Fenman classic bike show commi ee work hard throughout the year to organize this one day event which is held in Wimbotsham on the August bank holiday Monday each year. The con nued support and coopera on from the people from the village has contributed to this very successful annual event and the £125,000 raised for the local chari es over the last twenty nine years. This year 2018 will be our thir eth year which is quite a milestone to reach from it's humble beginnings.
To us the Fenman commi ee the local chari es and the EAAA are all vital to the wellbeing of the community we all live in and we look forward to this year being another successful show and being able to con nue making much needed dona ons to the chari es we support.

Enjoying the rare moments of sunshine in the garden with the family at the weekend and we had an uninvited guest.
A drone appeared and hovered, just above our garden, maybe 40 or so. There it sat buzzing away for 20 minutes!! The machine had a camera on it and it made me wonder a li le. Instead of ge ng upset with it and having my rant at a piece of plas c posted on social media, who was flying this? Was it a child’s new toy and just being nosey? Was it a nosey neighbour? A peeping tom? A paedophile? From maybe an innocent fly past, I started thinking the worst and was quite sure what I would do if I found them. 20 minutes is a long me to be in one place…. Hovering. There are laws in place to deal with people who obviously have no social awareness or common courtesy.
Maybe we could ask for people to have some considera on? See opposite:

9 your Wimbotsham May 2018 Wimbotsham hosts lunch for: Easter Sunday East Anglian Road Run
st On Sunday 1 April 2018 the NVTEC–EA Group held their annual vintage tractor road run. We set off from Bryan and Julie Beba’s at Walpole Highway, so we must thank them for the kind use of their superb facili es. This year David Askew and Peter Thorpe had organised the route so a big thank you to them both. It was a great ride round and there was even a couple of roads I had never been down, and I have lived around here for over 37 years so well done. My good friends Richard and Anola along with Peter Thorpe and myself were the stewards. Stephen Watson from the Vaporizing magazine came along for the first me to photograph the day but unfortunately Peter Love could not make it in the end as he had to cover the Na onal road run. I must say a massive thank you to all involved for turning out as luckily by the me we had a cup of tea and coffee it had just about stopped raining and hardly rained anymore. However, it had certainly been a wet trip for everybody to get to us and rather cold to say the least, so thank you all. We set off as always at 10.30am travelling through Terrington St John, Tilney St Lawrence, Tilney Cum Islington, St Germans, Magdalen, Watlington, Saddlebow and then stopping off at the Chequers

Peter Thorpe thanked everybody for coming and then presented Ken Baily with the trophy for the most money raised, £185.00, bea ng Malcolm Bush by just £4.00 so very well done to you both. You could also say that Ken also deserved a trophy for travelling two and half hours from Essex just to a end but either way just amazing.

13 your Wimbotsham May 2018 Another Norfolk Hero Remembered By Bernard Mullin Commemorating the 90 th . Anniversary of the death of PC George William Gutteridge Born in Wimbotsham1889 – Murdered in Stapleford Abbotts , Essex 1927 George William Gu eridge was a true Norfolk man and born in Wimbotsham near Downham Market in 1889. Without a father, he started work very young to support his mother, working for a variety of employers in the area including John “Johnny” Vince Long. A patrio c man, he was also a reservist with the local detachment of the Norfolk Regiment in tandem with his occupa onal du es. When he came of age, a new career began with the Essex County Constabulary only interrupted by comple ng his Na onal Service as an instructor at a military training camp in the north of England un l the end of World War One when he resumed his police du es un l his needless and early death at the age of 38. He is buried at Lorne Road Cemetery in Warley, Brentwood, Essex and a roadside memorial was erected in 1990 near to where he was murdered. He was a brave and tenacious Policeman reflec ng his Norfolk roots; his sacrifice being further commemorated last year by the raising of a Bronze Memorial Plaque within St. Mary the Virgin, the Parish Church of Stapleford Abbo s during which Norfolk and Essex Constabularies joined to remember a brave colleague. The Ultimate Price of Bravery. PC George William `Bill` Gu eridge was on his way home in the early hours of Tuesday 27 th . September 1927 a er mee ng his colleague PC Sydney Taylor at their conference point to discuss anything which may be of mutual interest in their Police du es. On that lonely and misty village road in Stapleford Abbo s Essex, cars were a rarity and it was certainly unusual to see one travelling at night, but through the heavy mist PC Gu eridge saw car headlamps approaching. Raising his hand stop the car, his suspicions were raised as the car went right past him. PC Gu eridge blew his whistle and the car came to a halt. As he approached the car he saw two men si ng in the front who, unknown to him were known London criminals who had just stolen the car, a Blue Morris Cowley belonging to a local doctor from Billericay. A er he had had briefly ques oned them using the light of his electric torch which he put back in his pocket, he bent forward and was in the process of taking down some details using the offside headlamp beam of the car to illuminate his pocket book when two shots in quick succession broke the s ll of the night. One of the men in the car had produced a heavy calibre (45.5) 14 Webley service revolver of the type used in the great war and shot PC Gu eridge twice in the le side of his face at almost point - blank range. As the policeman lay bleeding heavily and dying, the men went over to him and shot him twice again with one bullet in each eye at point-blank range killing him instantly in the misguided and unproved belief that the eyes held the last vision before death. It was over four hours before the lifeless body of PC Gu eridge was found by the mail bag delivery driver, Alec Ward. His murder caused na onal and interna onal outrage because of the brutality of the act, ini a ng a huge manhunt which, by the following May saw the killers, Leo Browne and William Kennedy go to the gallows resul ng from ballis c evidence in the form of a cartridge case found in the stolen car and at the scene of the murder, where two bullets were dug out of the road by a very observant policeman with a third being retrieved during the subsequent post-mortem ; a first in Bri sh judicial history where this kind of evidence conclusively linked the killers to the crime and convicted them. 22 your Wimbotsham May 2018 CPRE Norfolk Alliance
CPRE Norfolk is our county branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England. With so much countryside in Norfolk there is always plenty to do in trying to ensure development is appropriate to its proposed loca on, as well as other aspects such as protec ng our dark skies and tranquillity. Having said this, CPRE Norfolk is not against development per se , as we appreciate the need for more housing in par cular, especially when it’s mee ng real need, such as that for affordable homes in villages, enabling local people to live near their families and employment, or for example for re red residents wan ng to downsize.
Across Norfolk our Local Authori es have Local Plans in place which have already allocated sites for sufficient new housing, given current and historic build rates, to last for over 20 more years of construc on, and yet many more sites are being added into new and emerging plans. CPRE Norfolk’s calling for a common sense approach to be used for these new sites, which is for these only to be built-out once the vast majority of sites in exis ng plans are completed. This will mean that the most appropriate sites will be built first, providing homes where they are more needed, rather than allowing more of our precious countryside’s greenfield sites to be lost to unnecessary development. This is more likely to happen as developers understandably prefer to build on sites which will give them the highest returns, which o en means a rac ve rural sites. Instead, we urge Councils to adopt policies which ensure that exis ng sites are built out first, thus denying the opportunity to cherry-pick the most profitable sites, which are not likely to provide the homes which are most needed in the most suitable loca ons.
This approach has already gained the support of 142 Parish and Town Councils across Norfolk, as they have signed a pledge to this effect. With threats of unplanned development increasing, par cularly when Councils are unable to demonstrate a 5 year supply of land for housing, as well as those new sites coming on stream in the emerging Local Plans, we hope that more Parish and Town Councils will sign our pledge. A full list of the signatories to date is available on our website at: h p://www.cprenorfolk.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/ Alliance-Pledge-Signatures.pdf along with further details of our organisa on, which is a registered charity, and our other work and campaigns at: h p:// www.cprenorfolk.org.uk/ If your village or town has not signed yet, please consider asking your Council to do so. I can be contacted at the email address below and can also provide advice on other planning issues.
