I came across this story some time ago.

“A chairman decided that his company would sponsor a number of concerts in the town as a marketing exercise. The first concert they sponsored was Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony. Unfortunately the chairman had a prior engagement on the opening night and so gave his ticket to the Head of the Personnel Department.

The next morning the Chairman asked him how the concert was and the Head of Personnel replied that he had enjoyed it very much. But he then proceeded to hand the Chairman a memorandum which read as follows:

“As we are sponsoring these concerts, I have noticed that we could make significant cost cuttings - at no real expense to the quality of the performance - if we attended to the matters below.

1. For considerable periods of time the oboe players have nothing to do. The number should be reduced and their work spread over the whole orchestra, thus eliminating peaks of inactivity.

2. All 12 violins were playing identical notes. It seems an unnecessary duplication of effort and the staff in this section of the Orchestra could drastically be reduced. If a large volume of sound is really required, this could be obtained through an electric amplifier.

3. Much effort was put into playing demi-semiquavers. This seems an excessive refinement and it is recommended that all the notes should be rounded up to the nearest semiquaver. If this were done it would be possible to use trainees and lower grade instrument operators.

4. No useful purpose is served by repeating with horns the passage that has already been handled by strings. If all such passages were eliminated, the concert could be reduced from 2 hours to 20 minutes.

If Schubert had attended to all these matters, he would have been able to finish the symphony before he died!” For many of us, there is a tendency to treat the reading the Old Testament in the same way as the Head of Personnel saw the presence of the 12 violins in Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony – as unnecessary.

We have limited time to read our Bible and so, of necessity, the Old Testament is overlooked.

But we do so at our peril! If we ignore the Old Testament, we miss 39 books of God’s Word, recording God’s interaction with His Chosen people and their neighbours – and even their enemies.

And there are some gems in the Old Testament – stories from which we can learn and which can encourage us in our Christian lives.

We can read of fascinating conversion stories, like that in Daniel 4 of the pagan king, King Nebuchadnezzar– the most powerful man of his day who came to worship the true God of Israel.

We can read in the Old Testament the stories of the great men of God referred to in the New and find that they had the feet of clay too – which gives us encouragement to persevere with God and realise he hasn’t given up on us.

You can read how the great Patriarch Abraham lied to save his own skin. And, without the intervention of God, he would have left his wife Sarah - separated from the husband she loved - languishing in Abimelech’s harem (Gen 20). And while Sarah was in her haremic prison, Abraham was enjoying the wealth and riches that Abimelech had showered upon him in exchange for Sarah. And yet it was to this same Abraham that God promised he would be the father of many nations (cf Gen 15:5).

You can also read of how the Patriarch Jacob lied and cheated his brother Esau out of the birthright and blessing due to the eldest son. Yet God blessed Jacob – though he went through much suffering before he became the spiritually broken man, Israel of Jabbok’s Ford (Gen 32:22 et al)

Take Israel’s greatest Old Testament king, King David. King David is described in the New Testament by St Paul (Acts 13:22) as “a man after God’s own heart”, yet in one incident (2 Sam 11) he broke arguably five of the Ten Commandments (murder, adultery, stealing, lying and coveting his neighbour’s wife) in his adulterous fling with Bathsheba.

For all these men and women of God, their strength lay not in their human frailty but in their tenacity to seek God and his will in their lives.

And perhaps it is that which we have to consider as we approach, that God reaches out to us despite our human frailty. As God the Father said of Jesus “listen to Him” (Mt 17:5). And having listened we are challenged then to follow him.

Vicar’s warning

When you enter this church, it may be possible that you hear, “the call of God”.

However, it is unlikely that He will call you on your mobile. Thank you for turning off your phones

If you want to talk to God, enter, choose a quiet place and talk to Him.

If you want to see Him, send a text while driving.

Bowling of a Tuesday Night

A poem by Gwen SPRIGGS

I’ve taken up bowling,

At the age of eighty-two,

My family laughed,

“Well done Mother, good on you”.

Well, I really enjoy it,

I think it’s great fun.

I bowl that ball down the carpet,

It’s really not easy you see,

Because the ball is weighed one side,

Which seems ridiculous to me.

But soon I get the hang of it, Now all the power is mine,

As I roll that ball down the carpet,

And the all my friends whine.

“Too fast, Gwen” they shout,

Just take your time.

But if I bowl it gently,

It doesn’t reach the Jack,

So I have to bowl it fast,

Then it knocks everyone else,

Off the Jack.

I’m not a serious person,

I like to have a bit of fun,

So bowling on a Tuesday night,

Well yes, I really like that one.

My team won last night,

Twelve Nine,

I really don’t know what that means,

But I am having a whale of a time.

Tilney All Saints News

Although it’s only February, (as I write), it’s been a lovely sunny day today. At this time of the year the sun always makes me feel hopeful for better things to come. There are so many dismal things happening in the world, it’s easy to lose sight of simple joys. The warmth of the sun after a chilly spell is one of those simple joys. We could rejoice in them more than we actually do. Our church group at Tilney All Saints is another one of the joys of life. We are a group of friends, meeting together in the simplicity of Christian friendship. We meet one another with open hearts and minds, ready to offer a welcome to anyone who would like to join us. Our services aren’t slick and professional, sometimes they might seem a little bit casual (we are experimenting with being able to respond to what seems important at the moment) but a lot of preparation goes into them. Come along and try us. You will always be welcome and you could meet some new friends. You may also get to meet God if you are especially blessed.

We meet at 11am each week, except for the second Sunday of the month which is a 10am united service circulating round the four churches.

Mid-week service:

Every Wednesday morning at 9.30am, I perform a mid-week service of Holy Communion in the Lady Chapel of Tilney All Saints Church. It’s a wonderful opportunity to take some time away from the demands of day to day life and draw closer to God in this gentle service of thankfulness. Please consider coming if you are able to.

Dates for you Diary:

Lent begins on 6th March (Ash Wednesday). There will be two United Benefice services of Holy Communion on that day. One will be held at 3pm at Tilney St Lawrence & the other at 7pm at Magdalen.

Jars of Tears

At Tilney All Saints we are collecting for Water Aid during Lent using their ‘Jars of Tears’ campaign. All this involves is having a labelled jar in your house where people put money that they may have spent on treats and/or place loose change. At the end of Lent the money will be collected together and sent to Water Aid. If you would like to join in, all you need is a jam jar!

Mothering Sunday is 31.03.19. There will be a Family Service (That means it’s for everyone, whatever your age.) at 11am, with gifts for the ladies, sweets for the children & followed by refreshments. Please come, you’ll be most welcome.

Palm Sunday is 14th April. There will be a united benefice service of Holy Communion at 10am at Terrington St John Church.

Good Friday is 19.04.19. At Tilney All Saints there will be a service at 3pm. This will be a mixture of quietness, Bible readings and poems. A moving and thoughtful experience.

Easter Day: A joyful service of Holy Communion at 11am. Small chocolate eggs for the children (and for most of the adults!). I’ll look forward to seeing you there!

God bless, Rev’d Barbara Pearman 01553 828808 [email protected]

Tilney All Saints Village Hall News

A new club called ‘Magical Musical Memories’ was trialled on Thursday afternoons, the intention being to share memories of favourite music. Those interested brought examples of their favourites and all were invited to sit and listen, sing along or dance – whatever they wished. Unfortunately, attendance was not sufficient to continue but if enough interest can be raised, it is hoped to try again later in the year. If you think this would interest you, please contact Audrey on 01553 829603 for details.

The Quiz Night scheduled for Feb 22nd will have happened when you read this. See the next issue of the Village News for a report.

A Plant Sale should be held on Saturday 27th April from 10.00 til 14.00 – all being well!

Last year’s Sale had to be postponed until May because of the awful weather in April so fingers are crossed for this year’s. It won’t be long before the ladies of the committee will start to produce their delicious home-made cakes in time for our Afternoon Tea on Saturday 25th May. As usual, there will be a huge array of tempting sandwiches, cakes and biscuits – all home-made – which our waitresses will serve you on our best china, along with unlimited tea or coffee. Make a note in your diary now. Everyone is welcome, especially singles or new villagers who will be greeted at the door and shown to table. This is an excellent opportunity to make new friends.

A Reminder: every 4 weeks the Library van comes to the village and stops outside the Hall. We provide refreshments for visitors to the Library and for anyone else who happens to be passing. These Coffee Mornings are becoming increasingly popular – they provide opportunities to get out of the house and meet with others while enjoying a coffee and home-made cake or biscuits. All this for only £1 !! See below for dates.

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

Our small team of researchers continues to be busy help others with their family research. I remember a story from my own family. My grandfather was born in Orkney, his father, a horse breeder and farmer, decided to leave Orkney and buy land in North Hertfordshire.

They travelled by boat. My grandfather told me that he remembered the journey by boat and going with his father to water & feed the horses in the hold, they were held upright in slings so they would not fall and hurt themselves.

It puzzled me how they could travel to a land locked county by boat, until I realised they travelled on the Grand Union canal. He told me they stopped off at Redbourn to stay on a farm on the downs. Before travelling by road to a farm in North Hertfordshire. I later found the farm had been sold to become Whipsnade Zoo.

Computer Sessions - our team of experienced researcher will be in Wisbech Library on first Tuesday of each month from 10 – 12 noon to help visitors with their family history. On the second Tuesday of the month they will be in Wyevale Garden Centre Crowland from 11 – 3p.m. you will find them in the restaurant.

Monthly meetings - are held on the FOURTH Thursday of each month in Wisbech Library from 7 – 9pm. Including a Speaker, Book Shop and Reference Stand and our researchers will be on hand to help with research at the beginning of the meetings. Our February meeting will be on Thursday 27th in Wisbech Library. Our guest speaker will be Sam GODLEY with a talk about ONE-NAME STUDIES. In March 28th the meeting will concentrate on helping members with ‘Myths, Stumbling blocks and Brick walls. Everyone welcome to attend our meeting.

Visitors fee £2 donation. Events - Our team is busy preparing displays to match the theme of various events being held in the area. We will be very busy in May. We will be in Elgood’s Brewery Plant & Craft Fair. St Augustine Church 150th anniversary with a display of ‘Weddings through the Ages’. Followed by the Walpole Flower Festival, which is ‘Transport through the Ages’. If you would like us to attend your event as an added interest please call us.

Terrington St John News

Terrington St John Parish Council-Chairman’s report

I have held up providing an update until some of the actions I have been reporting have come to fruition. There are many now and I will list where we are with them -

* The Neighbourhood Plan went to consultation in January and would have been externally examined by the time you read this. Also in January we held a ‘SHOW AND TELL’ to inform parishioners on the status of the Neighbourhood plan. Once our document is agreed we can hold a referendum in the parish to seek acceptance by you before gaining full approval-target to adopt the NP – Hopefully by the end of summer this year.

At the ‘Show and Tell’ we also presented the full range of the actions the Parish Council is working on -

* The school road housing development by now we expect the development will have started. The developer has been extremely proactive and agreed to the following road safety improvements on behalf of the Parish- o It was agreed to construct a pedestrian crossing by the school and improve the road layout safety by the school. o The area outside the school will become a 20mph ‘school patrol’ zone during the construction of the housing development AND this will remain. o The 30 MPH speed limit will be extended south along school road-exact distance still to be confirmed, but we are seeking to extend it as far as possible. o The layby in front of the school playing field is retained and improved to ultimately provide a ‘drop off and pick up point’ for children. this will greatly reduce the need for parents and guardians to park on school road and together with the crossing greatly improve road safety outside the school * Housing Development at the end of Old Church Road. We met with the developer late last year and are working with him to try and achieve a development that is sympathetic to the style of our village housing. We anticipate the development will start mid-summer this year. Part of the agreement for this development will be a footpath from the pharmacy, on the west side of the road, which will be extended the full length of Old church road, providing a pedestrian access to the new development.

Both these new developments will, increase the volume of Heavy vehicle traffic until they are complete. Both developers have acknowledge this and will be working to minimise any disruption

* Those of you who have used the trod will know that a lamp post was left in the middle of the trod. Hopefully this would have been resolved by the time you read this –it takes an inordinate period of time to raise these issues with the utility companies!

* Village playing area car park. We have extended the car park and reorganised the entry, trimmed the hedge to cater for parking and safer entry. Provided a bike rack, tidied up Charity donation bins and added new, large waste bins.

We are intending to trim the large conifers to the east of the site and reinstate fencing and remove any dangerous shrubbery and trees.

* Children’s play equipment following an application and due to the generosity of the Village Hall Committee giving us funding, we intend to install a children’s play area with suitable equipment to the north of the scout hut. We also plan to provide suitable seating and a recreation area for all ages (this may already have begun by the time you read this).

* Our Speedwatch initiative continues to hold sessions virtually every week, thanks to our co-ordinator –Roger Mullis. Our objective for the Speedwatch is to ‘raise awareness’, not to ‘notch up’ prosecutions. Recent statistics suggest we are indeed seeing a reduction in offending drivers in our parish. So many thanks to Roger and his volunteers. We continue to run our SAM2 equipment within the Parish. * Burman House .Late last year we became concerned by the report that Burman house was to close with all 25 of its residents being moved to other facilities.

The Parish Council requested a full explanation of why from Norse Care – The managing Company of Burman House. Suffice to say that following attendance at two Parish Council meetings Councillors Brian Long and Barry Ayres undertook to pursue specific actions on behalf of the Parish Council. These actions, along with those of others have resulted in the retention of Burman house as a specialist facility for patients with dementia. We understand the existing residents are remaining.

* Ely road dyke. After some 35 years or so…..We are finally getting a resolution to the issues of Ely Row dyke. To date -Highways have now accepted they are responsible for the road: The drainage board have conducted investigations and undertaken excavations to determine the nature of the Dyke. At this time we are pursuing support to pipe the dyke and cover it. As soon as I can report more on this action I will do so.

* There are numerous actions the parish council have-are undertaking to improve and upgrade the wellbeing of all parishioners –this includes replacing a badly damaged bus shelter. Getting highways to reinstate the curbing by the shelter to deter vehicles riding the pavement. Installing bollards in front of the shelter, again to protect pedestrians and those waiting for buses and possibly damaging the new bus shelter. Installing large waste bins to avoid rubbish spilling out of the smaller, inadequate bins.

Install a further bike rack along main road close to the bus stop. We have increased the cutting frequency of the grassed areas we are responsible for and this should improve the appearance of our village.

* Road infrastructure. My last report referred to the road monitoring and study around the whole of Kings Lynn with the intent of determining the needs and current use of the road infrastructure. The report from this study is due this spring. As soon as the Parish Council has sight of it we will provide feedback and any implications on Terrington St John. * Village gates. By now, dependent upon highways we will have installed white village marker gates on entry roads to the village. These are further initiatives to help reduce the speed of vehicles entering the village.

To finish-

* The Parish Council normally meet -1st Wednesday of each month. Our activities, actions and use of the precept is clearly available both at our meetings and also posted on the web site and in many case available to see in the notice boards around the parish. If you would like to support the Speedwatch or become a Parish Councillor please contact me, our Vice Chair, or Clerk in the first instance. And of course you are welcome to attend out regular meetings where you can participate in shaping the future of the Parish.

* Ward changes. This year sees a change to our ward. We now join Terrington St Clements, no longer part of the St Lawrence ward. This naturally means that Councillor Barry Ayes will no longer be directly involved with us. On behalf of this and previous Terrington St John Parish Councils we would like to thank Barry for his support and guidance over the years.
