Ryston Park Newsletter May 2019

By Pam Taylor

Broad Bordered Bee Hawk Moth ( First sighting for me) We have been blessed with some great weather for playing golf. The course has enjoyed the rain of late, and it is looking really good. The greens are running good and true and most of the fairways have a good bit of grass on them, so shots into the greens are easy (I still cant get them right though!).

We now seem to have competitions every week, so there’s always plenty to play for. One of the highlights of the season is the upcoming Club Championship, which will be held on the 23rd of June. For those of you who have not played it, it is a 36 hole medal in one day with cups for both scratch and handicap scores. More importantly, there will be sandwiches and chips on offer in the clubhouse after 18 holes. I intend to be playing this, which did not seem possible in the winter when I was exhausted from having chemotherapy. I would love to see a big entry list - I hope lots of you can take part!

The most important thing for all of us is to enjoy the golf we play, and play in a style that respects others.

Enjoy! Club Captain Nigel Wagg Nigel Wagg Club Captain So much to say about the month of May that I hardly know where to start! Here are just some of the highlights:

On Friday 10th May, I was very privileged to be at to watch Tiffany Mills and Ann Fletcher playing in the County Championships. Both ladies did well, just missing out on the team prize on countback. Tiff especially excelled that day, and I was able to watch the back half of her afternoon round in which she set a new course record. It was a remarkable achievement, especially on a day which started out wet and then turned windy, and it earned her both the Scratch and Handicap Prize for the 36 holes played that day. She made it all look so easy!

On 17th May, Park was host to 58 ladies from about a dozen different golf clubs for our annual Ladies’ Spring Open. Despite a damp start, all the visitors seemed to thoroughly enjoy their day at Ryston, and we received many compliments about the course, the catering, and the improvements to the ladies’ changing room, which were paid for by previous years’ Open competitions. The winners were Jayne Harrold and Debra Darling from Costessey Park with 42 points. Well done to Lyn and the Committee for organising a successful day.

But far and away the best day for me has to be Lady Captain’s Day on 29th May, which will always be a happy memory. Not only did I have my beloved family with me to help run the show, there was also nearly a full turnout of the lady members. I could not have wished for a better time, and only hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. Thank you for all the cards, gifts and good wishes, and congratulations to all the prize winners, especially Ann Fletcher who took the main prize with 36 points. Ladies Captain

Ryston Park Ladies are through to the semi-finals of the Diamond League, which will Pat Blyth be played on 7th July. What an exciting month it has been, and sorry I haven’t been able to include more!

Ladies’ Captain Pat. Ladies Captain’s Day (More photos and a video of the day can be seen on Ryston Park Facebook Page) The SSAFA Qualifying Stableford was held at the beginning of the month. This was won by Mike Brown with an excellent 41 points with Geoff Marshall the runner-up with 36. They were followed by Ian Buttle (35), Chris Taylor (33) and John Rice (32). Mike and Geoff will go on to represent us at Bawburgh where all participating clubs will be represented. 28 golfers played in our competition and £150 was raised for this tri-service charity.

An Away Day took place at Thorpe Wood, Peterborough on 16 May. 24 golfers enjoyed the day comprising a Stableford competition, followed by a two course ‘steak’ meal. A demanding golf course saw Chris Taylor with 33 points win on count back from Terry Carver. Also amongst the prizes were Roger March (32), Nick Howes (31) and Graham Kingham (30). Best front 9 score came from John Venni (17) and back 9 Geoff Marshall (16). Nearest the pin winners were Nick Howes and Len Candlish. Thanks go to organiser Pat Holman for providing us with a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Don Rowell’s annual Qualifying Stableford was won by Graham Warren with an outstanding 42 points. How good this was can be measured by the next best score being 34 which was achieved by Doug Jefferson, Eric Savage and Roger March. John Moss and Len Candlish got 33 points. Well done Graham and thanks go to Don for the prizes and refreshments.

Friendlies this month included a first fixture with Girton which finished 3 – 3. This was followed by fixtures against Richmond Park (3 – 3), Kings Lynn (L5½ - ½) and (L4 – 2).

A busy but most enjoyable months golf!

The mixed friendly played at March Golf Club gave the home team a resounding win. Brunch was served before the match with everyone getting to meet their opponents before the match - this worked very well which then left time for drinks and a chat afterwards and a early ride home. Although the result wasn’t very good it was a very friendly game . Thanks to those who played in the match and thanks to March for their hospitality. RICHARD CAVE participated in the GEAR 10K run in King’s Lynn with a time of 1hr 3mins.

Richard raised £1,010 for the Meadowgate Academy - a school for disabled Richard Cave children.

He continued his run with a twisted ankle. There is still time to donate - you can leave a donation with the office. Day 1 of the Norfolk County Ladies Championship.

Congratulations to Tiff Mills who won the nett and gross trophies and also set a new ladies course record at Hunstanton. Holiday in France Winning photos this month
