Death Metal / Grindcore Label: FDA Rekotz Album Titel: We Rot Within Spielzeit: 32:15 VÖ: 22.01.2016 Band: Refusal (FIN) Genre: Death Metal / Grindcore Label: FDA Rekotz Album Titel: We Rot Within Spielzeit: 32:15 VÖ: 22.01.2016 Refusal aus Finnland haben eine etwas ungewöhnliche Karriere hinter sich. 2008 gegründet, hat die Band bislang lediglich sieben Demos veröffentlicht. Dazu zwei streng limitierte Tape-Compilations mit je zwei Demos, wobei das "Short On Ammo"-Demo auf beiden Zusammenstellung zu finden war. Dem Vernehmen nach spielte die Band, während sie konstant Demos aufnahm, an die 100 Live-Shows. Welche Gründe es für dieses doch eher unübliche Vorgehen gibt, konnte ich nicht in Erfahrung bringen. Sieben Demos in acht Jahren ist doch eher sonderbar. Aber ob geplant oder nicht, geschadet hat das der Band in musikalischer Hinsicht keinesfalls. Bis auf "Dead End Society" und "Doomed" sind übrigens alle Tracks bereits auf den Demos zu Ehren gekommen. Nach den ersten Durchläufen bleibt der Eindruck hängen, dass es sich bei "We Rot Within" um ein reines Grindcore Album handelt. Angesiedelt im Bereich zwischen neueren Napalm Death und Nasum. Je häufiger man die Platte dann allerdings anhört, desto mehr Death Metal Einflüsse offenbaren sich. Neben den kurzen, abgehackten Grindcore-Tonfolgen tauchen dann schwedische und amerikanische Death Metal-Riffs auf. Zwar ist der Anteil an Blastbeats recht hoch, doch es wird nicht von Anfang bis Ende durchgeprügelt. Und gerade die eher langsameren Momente klingen dann doch sehr nach Death Metal. Da der Sänger mich an Karl Willets, Barney Greenway und Dave Ingram erinnert, kommen zwangsläufig Namen wie Bolt Thrower, Benediction und Napalm Death zu "Harmony Corruption" Zeiten, als die Grindcore-Urväter heftigste Schlagseite Richtung Death Metal hatten, in den Sinn. Und das Tolle: Refusal schaffen es, diesen Mix ohne Brüche zu spielen. Wahrscheinlich haben die 100 Live-Shows, die die Band in den Jahren absolviert hat, zu entsprechender Leistungsfähigkeit in puncto Songwriting und Instrumentenbeherrschung geführt. Fazit: Alles andere als leicht verdauliche Kost, diese Mischung aus brutalem Death Metal englischer Schule und Grindcore. Aber wer es mag, wird vor Freude aus dem Häuschen sein. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

There may be some minor differences with the formatting of the printed version.] 1 ABSTRACT Extreme Metal musical genres have challenged conventional notions of ‘music’ by developing an impenetrable sound that verges on formless noise. Extreme Metal music is produced, disseminated and consumed by musicians and fans who shun publicity within a set of obscure institutions that ensure the music’s global ‘underground’ circulation. Within the confines of obscurity, musicians and fans explore in a highly ‘transgressive’ manner such themes as death, war and the occult, sometimes flirting with neo-fascist and racist discourses. This thesis develops the concept of ‘scene’ as a method of investigating Extreme Metal music and practice. The concept is theorised through an engagement with a wide variety of literatures, notably subcultural theory, theories of community and critical theories of space. The concept is developed so as to provide an ‘holistic’ method of drawing on a wide variety of incommensurate literatures and conceptual frameworks. Through the concept of scene, this thesis examines how the Extreme Metal scene is ‘experienced’ by its members. Detailed ethnographic, interview and other data are presented from case studies in Israel, Sweden and the United Kingdom. It is argued that scene members explore transgressive experiences that constantly threaten to exceed the confines of the scene.

NAPALM DEATH’s enduring impact on the world of sonic savagery began in earnest in the late 80s, when the band’s first two albums – 1987’s Scum and its 1988 follow-up From Enslavement To Obliteration – refined and redefined the notion of brutality and velocity in the worlds of punk, hardcore and metal. Endorsed by legendary and much-missed DJ John Peel, the Brummie grindcore pioneers were such an exhilarating and yet alien dose of jolting adrenaline that even the mainstream media were forced to prick up their ears and take note. Throw in the fact that NAPALM DEATH were – and still are – driven by a ferocious intelligence and a genuine desire to make the world a better place through the promotion of rational thought and respect for all fellow humans, they stood apart from the often nihilistic and intellectually bankrupt underground metal scene and have re- mained unique and unerring ever since. While grind purists may point to those earliest records as evidence of the band’s signifi- cance, it is the tireless and terrorising exploits of the now classic line-up of vocalist Mark ‘Barney’ Greenway, bassist Shane Embury, guitarist Mitch Harris and drummer Danny Herrera that have cemented NAPALM DEATH’s status as extreme music leg- ends.

    Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

Queríamos registrar o underground menos divulgado, o mais subterrâneo, aquele que conhecemos através de zines, fitas K7, LPs e parecia esquecido, perdido no passado - e falar sobre como fomos motivados por tudo isso; de como toda essa “cena” se tornou motivação para uma infinidades de pessoas - deu personalidade a muitas gerações de jovens que, com isso, montaram bandas, escreveram zines e criaram tudo o que conhecemos hoje - uma “cena” que ainda está em movimento... falar sobre o que essa “cena” se tornou e, assim, falar de quem somos nós. Do que gostamos. No que acreditamos. O que nos motivou. O que nos inspirou e o que aprendemos com cada parte dessas “pequenas cena” amadoras e inconformistas - rústicas e honestas. Nós queremos preservar a história! A história subterrânea, marginalizada e deturpada - a história de pessoas e suas ideias, e suas ideologias... a história de movimentos que usaram a “música” como plataforma para discursos humanitários, antiguerra, críticos, anarquistas, antifascistas e etc... Que lutam contra maus tratos aos animais e proteção de florestas; que lutam por todos os tipos de minorias, pelo direito dos povos indígenas - pessoas que gritavam alto a indignação de uma política mercantilista e escravista; de um mundo onde somos meras mercadorias, onde a grande maioria é gado, é alienada, e é enganada diariamente por um sistema que esmaga e oprime.
