EDUCATION DEPARTMENT. 1849-186L THIS volume contains. the selected papers of the Educati(i)n Depart. ment from its establishment down to 1861. The Department was first started in 1854 and was originally under the ordera of the Judicial Commissioner. In 1856 it was transferred to the Financial Commissioner. The first Director of Public Instruction was appointed in the person of Mr. W. D. ~inold-a son of D~. Arnold of Rughby-who had previously been first an officer in the Army and then an Assistant Commissioner. Ail the Department ~xpanded Inspectors were appointed-Messrs. Paske and Browne being the first two-.-~th ·the necessary assistant staff. From the records it appears that the Department... was very little affected by ,the Mutiny of -1857. Indeed, the actual number of students in the schools went up during the werst maD-the of the out-break, i.e.,'from May to JlJly.. Apart from this the Mutiny is hardly mentioned. There is a circular from the Director of PubJ.i!3 Jnstruc­ tion ordering schools to be kept open and salaries to be pa~dz:egUI~rly' and later a proposal to reduce establishment to save money. Beyond this an application for a Police Guar.d for the office is pra.ctically all there js in reference to the Mutiny. From the first the Punjab authorities showed great enthusiasm in. the cause of education, so great, indeed, as to cause misgivings on the part; of the Government of India who complained that, at the rate the Punjab Q-overnmenl; were going" they would kill private competition altogether and further, that they were spending more in proportion on educaiion than any other proVince. Mr. Arnold went on leave in 1859 and died at Algeciras on ,the way home. After various officiatings and the offer of the appointment to Mr. Maclagan-father of Sir Edward Maclagan-who declined it, Captain A.     CHAPTER 14 DANCE-OFF, OR A BATTLE FOR THE FUTURE Dance Reality Shows in India PALLABI CHAKRAVORTY Hindu mythology tells us that a most reasonable method of settling an argument is a dance-off. The story involves two of the most powerful Hindu deities, Shiva and Kali (who are husband and wife). Once they clashed over territorial dominance of the Thillai forest in the southern part of India. Kali was the patron goddess of the forest and the temple within it. But Shiva, following his two devotees who wanted to worship him in the temple (in the form of his abstract representation called the Shiva lingam), came to dance in the forest. This basically meant that Shiva wanted to occupy the forest and oust Kali. Kali refused to leave and challenged Shiva to enter a dance competition with her on the condition that the loser would leave the forest. Lord Vishnu presided as the judge. Kali (the goddess of Shakti, or power, who is often shown naked in Hindu iconog­ raphy, standing on the chest of her consort Shiva, prostrated beneath her) danced fear­ lessly. She matched Shiva’s every move and every posture with ease and grace. Shiva, the cosmic dancer of the universe, danced his tandava nritya (the cyclic dance of cre­ ative destruction) with fierce intensity. They were unrelenting. They danced for days and nights, but no one won. Then Shiva performed a transgressive act. He cheated. He lifted one of his legs high above his head in what classical dance parlance calls ananda tandavam (the dance of bliss).

    Postcolonial Text, Vol 12, No 1 (2017) Beyond the Wounded Archive: Partition’s Hauntings and Bombay Cinema Sarah Waheed Davidson College, North Carolina, USA Introduction The year is 1949. It is only two years after independence and the Partition of India, and the first horror film of Hindi-Urdu cinema, the Gothic thriller, Mahal (The Mansion), is a box office hit. Spectators watch the following: it is a dark, stormy night just outside the city of Allahabad, and on the banks of the Yamuna River lies a desolate palatial mansion called Sangam Bhavan, which a young lawyer, Hari Shankar (Ashok Kumar) has just won in an auction. Shankar enters the mansion and is greeted by an elderly gardener who lives on the premises. He tells Shankar the tragic story of Sangam Bhavan’s former inhabitants. The original owner built the mansion for his beloved mistress, Kamini, but drowned one night when his boat capsized in the river. Kamini died pining for him. When the gardener finishes his story, he leaves Shankar alone to explore the mansion. Shankar comes across a painted portrait of the former owner of the mahal, and is stunned to discover that it bears an uncanny resemblance to himself. Suddenly, the clock strikes two. Shankar hears, and then sees, an ethereal woman singing a song of intense yearning for a lover’s return. This is the long dead Kamini (Madhubala) whose wandering spirit inhabits Sangam Bhavan. Convinced he has been re-born for the singular purpose of being re-united with Kamini, and willing to do anything to obtain her—including murder—Shankar descends into obsession, madness, grief, and finally, death.

Although Muslims constituted the majority of the population, it was, however, the Hindus and Sikhs who largely controlled economic activity in the city. Any territorial division of the province was likely to be grim not only for community relations but also for the city’s continued prosperity. Based on archival material, this paper firstly, seeks to explain Lahore’s colonial growth by demonstrating the ways in which the city’s urbanisation was stimulated by the development of civil lines, cantonment areas and migration, along with the ways in which its strategic location, boosted by the development of railways, assisted in its rise. It then looks at the impact of these structural changes and urban developments on the experiences of people and practices of trade and employment. Secondly, it outlines the role Hindu and Sikh trading classes were playing in the city’s socio-economic life on the eve of Partition.
