NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT COUNCIL (NEMC) NOTICE TO COLLECT APPROVED AND SIGNED ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATES Section 81 of the Environment Management Act, 2004 stipulates that any person, being a proponent or a developer of a project or undertaking of a type specified in Third Schedule, to which Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is required to be made by the law governing such project or undertaking or in the absence of such law, by regulation made by the Minister, shall undertake or cause to be undertaken, at his own cost an environmental impact assessment study. The Environmental Management Act, (2004) requires also that upon completion of the review of the report, the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) shall submit recommendations to the Minister for approval and issuance of certificate. The approved and signed certificates are returned to NEMC to formalize their registration into the database before handing over to the Developers. Therefore, the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) is inviting proponents/developers to collect their approved and signed certificates in the categories of Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Audit, Variation and Transfer of Certificates, as well as Provisional Environmental Clearance. WIDER Working Paper 2021/53 Towards sustainable livelihoods in the Tanzanian informal economy Facilitating inclusion, organization, and rights for street vendors Ilona Steiler1 and Chediel Nyirenda2 March 2021 In partnership with This publication results from Sustainable development solutions for Tanzania—strengthening research to achieve SDGs, a collaborative project between the UONGOZI Institute in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and UNU-WIDER in Helsinki, Finland, with a main research objective of informing the development and implementation of policies aiming for economic transformation and sustainable development in Tanzania and the East African region. With financial support provided by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, the joint project was launched in 2018 with key research questions giving the partners a framework for collaboration and the research work to be undertaken. The project focuses on macroeconomic perspectives, domestic resource mobilization, extractives, industrialization, sustainable livelihoods, and gender as a cross-cutting issue. The project provides local stakeholders a platform for research and policy discussions on Tanzania and bridges these discussions to the regional and international development debate. This is a three-year project run by the Development Planning Unit, University College London in collaboration with a number of institutions from developing countries and with support from the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID). The purpose of the project is to improve guidance on governance and management of water and sanitation in the peri-urban interface (PUI) of metropolitan areas, in order to increase access by the poor and promote environmental sustainability. Presently there is a gap in the operating knowledge of implementing agencies on the specific problems that arise in the PUI. -

INTRODUCTION The Government of Tanzania intends to establish, operate and manage a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which is a cost effective sustainable transportation system for Dar es Salaam City to ensure fast and orderly flow of traffic on urban streets and roads. The Dar es Salaam BRT project follows the current land use plan that shows an extension of planned residential areas in the north-west direction along Ali Hassan Mwinyi road, in the south direction along Kilwa road and in Tabata area. The plan also shows an extension of unplanned residential areas in the west along Morogoro road and in the south-west corridor along Nyerere road. There is also an extension of industrial areas north along Ali Hassan Mwinyi road, along Nyerere road and part of Mikocheni Area. These areas constitute Phase 1,2 and 3 of the BRT System. -

© Lonely Planet Publications 84 Dar es Salaam DAR ES SALAAM DAR ES SALAAM With a population of almost three million and East Africa’s second-largest port, Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s major centre and capital in everything but name (Dodoma is the parliamentary capital). Yet under its veneer of urban bustle, the city remains a down-to-earth, manageable place, with a picturesque seaport, a fascinating mixture of African, Arabic and Indian influ- ences and close ties to its Swahili roots. While there aren’t many ‘sights’ as such, there are craft markets, shops and restaurants enough to keep most visitors busy. The streets, too, are full of colour and activity, as men weave through traffic on large Chinese-made single-speed bicycles, while women clad in brightly hued kangas (printed cotton wraparounds worn by many Tanzanian women) stand in the shade of government office blocks balancing trays of bananas and mangoes on their heads. Along the waterfront, colonial-era buildings with their red-tiled roofs jostle for space with sleek, modern high-rises, massive ocean liners chug into the harbour and peacocks stroll across the leafy, manicured State House grounds. An increasing number of travellers bypass ‘Dar’ completely, by taking advantage of one of the many international flights into Kilimanjaro International Airport (between Arusha and Moshi). Yet the city merits a visit in its own right as Tanzania’s political and economic hub. It’s also an agreeable place to break your travels elsewhere in the country, with an array of services and well-stocked shops. For a break from the bustle, there are easily accessed beaches and islands just north and south of town, and Zanzibar is only a short ferry or plane ride away.
