    CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Project Overview The lubricant sub-sector of the downstream industry is one with so many potential that is capable of being a major source of revenue earner for the country, and has grown over the years with increase in the number of second hand passenger and commercial vehicles in the country calling for more frequent lubricant changes. Though Nigeria has an installed lubricant capacity of 600, 000 metric tonnes the current demand is 700 million litres which is about 1% of global demand. The lubricants market is driven by various steps being taken by government such as initiatives to increase the ease of doing business to boost manufacturing sector activities and the Nigeria Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) to emphasize investment in infrastructure. With the increase of import duty on finished lubricants to 30% and the recent 7.5 percent VAT on finished lubes in the country, the sectors have been opened up for further investment and the proposed project considered in this study is set to explore the given opportunity. Though there are presently 34 lube blending plants in Nigeria, only two of these (5.9%) are located in the south- south region of the country (DPR, 2020). Abstract Fish species were investigated for 12 calendar months from March 2009 – February 2010 forthnightly using traps, gillnets and cast nets from three sampling stations in Ikpa River. Ornamental fish species were sorted out from the pooled samples. The findings revealed that of the 2307 fish specimens sampled, 1074 specimens made up of 38 species and 19 families were of indigenous ornamental fish. The highest contributing family in terms of number of species is Cichlidae (10 species) whereas Schilbeidae (593 specimens; 55.21%) is the highest contributor in terms of total number of specimens sampled. This is followed by Mochokidae and Mormyridae with 4 species each and Cichlidae with 158 specimens (14.70%). At the species level, the highest contributor is Physalia pellucida (577 specimens; 53.72%) and is followed by Erpetoichthys calabaricus (60 specimens; 5.59%). The least contributors were Heterobranchus bidorsalis, Periophthalmus barbarus and Pelvicachromis pulcher (1 specimen; 0.09%). Twelve families recorded only one species each. These great potentials of ornamental fish have been left unexploited and hence, undeveloped.

Department of Zoology, Government College University, Lahore Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Pakistan has introduced several alien exotic fish species e.g. grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), bighead carp, (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), silver carp, (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), gold fish (Carassius auratus), and three species of tilapia (Oreochromis aureus, Oreochromis mossambicus, Oreochromis niloticus) in warm waters along with two trout species: the rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss) and the brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) in colder regions for specific purposes like sport fishing, yield enhancement and biological control of aquatic weeds and mosquitoes. The exotic species are becoming invasive in the freshwater biomes of the Punjab and other provinces of Pakistan by reason of their potent reproductive potential and feeding competitions with the native freshwater fish fauna. Resultantly the native fish species viz; Channa marulius, Wallago attu, Rita rita, Sperata sarwari, Gibelion catla, Cirrhinus mrigala and Labeo rohita, which are of economic value are under threat. Schilbe mystus The fish were collected with gill nets, hook and line. Seventy five out of the one hundred fish examined were infected (75.0%) with parasites. The end oparasites recovered were mostly nematodes, trematodes, cestodes, protozoa and acanthocephalans.
