ABSTRACT FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF: LIVING IN THE WORD AN EXAMINATION OF THE TEXT AND TRADITIONAL PERFORMANCES OF FOR COLORED GIRLS… AS A STUDY FOR A MULTICULTURAL PRODUCTION by John Nyrere Frazier for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf is a choreopoem performance play written and developed by Ntozake Shange. The piece grew out of an artistic collective which included Asians, Black Americans, Northern Continental Indigenes Peoples, European Americans, and Puerto Rican. The original west coast production included both Puerto Ricans and Asians. I believe that, that casting choice was as deliberate as Shange’s choices of language and content. Those multicultural women were bodied cultural references. In its move and further development, though, the casting changed to only include Black American women; narrowing the works physicalized cultural references. The major focus of my paper is to reconnect with Shange’s original casting choices as reasoning for re-widening casting and by extension, bodied cultural reference. My purpose is to lay the foundation for a return to the author’s original cultural intentions for the play which I assert were to write and perform a feminist piece that presented the lives and cultures of many “different kinds” (ethnicities/ cultures/ nationalities) of women. In addition, through the bodied references in the production, I intend to apply the work to the lives of more than just Black American and African American women; using the play as a feminist connective tissue between different women and differing feminisms that are all fighting again female oppression. -

Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enough: the generic malleability and accessibility of an ever-evolving multi-semiotic play1 Ester Gendusa University of Palermo, Italy [email protected] [email protected] Abstract This essay will explore the ways in which the generic fluidity of Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enough (1975) can be conceived of as a vehicle for accessibility within the creative industry. Mostly deriving from the choreopoem’s inherent multimodality as well as its intralingual and intersemiotic translations, the work’s transformative malleability will be analysed on the basis of an interdisciplinary theoretical model founded mainly on a semiotic approach. Simultaneously, the peculiar linguistic aspects of the work resulting in its innovative orality, on the one hand, and the distinctive forms of creativity entailed in all the different transpositions of the work – that is, its stage, television and film adaptations – will be underlined. Many people have come into my life in the last several years and encouraged my studies, talked excitedly with me, and subtly (or blatantly) pushed me to continue when I thought the road ahead looked too ominous. In 2005, at San Francisco State University’s Asian American Studies banquet, my Master’s thesis chair, Wei Ming Dariotis, remarked that a PhD was in the stars for me. Those words stayed close to me during my graduate work at the University of Hawai'i. My first teaching assistantship with Isabelle Peluad at San Francisco State University in Asian American Literature showed me exactly what I wanted to immerse myself in for the rest of my life. Graduate courses with Russell Jeung and Madeline Hsu reaffirmed my desire to work within the field of Asian American Studies and continue on to a doctorate program. My coursework in American Studies was rigorous and pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way. -

ABSTRACT: Title of Dissertation: BROWNGIRL NARRATIVES: EXPLORING COMING OF AGE IN THE GOLDEN ERA OF HIP HOP (1986-1996) Melissa Kim Chae Reddy, Doctor of Philosophy, 2013 Dissertation Directed By: Associate Professor Psyche Williams-Forson Department of American Studies “Browngirl Narratives” seeks to gain a clearer understanding of what we can learn from the textual evidence about the experiences of browngirls who came of age during the post-civil rights Golden Age of Hip Hop (1986-1996) by examining the contemporary literature, film, social media and music produced by and about these black women. It is an inquiry into the ways in which browngirls who came of age in the United States1 negotiate the dominant scripts that exist in their lives––literature, music, film, television and the Internet––to create and craft their own stories. The aim here is to utilize an interdisciplinary, black female-centered framework to fully problematize phenomena such as self-creation, empowerment, and sexual exploration in the lives of black women who came of age during the approximate ten year period of 1986-196. This study is an examination of black female bidungsromane–– black female cultural texts which illustrate the coming of age and/or development processes. Additionally it is an investigation into what we can learn about the ongoing 1! Early depictions of Black people, from the 19th century minstrel shows of White actors in Black face and offensive or stereotypical animated films to the narrow typecasting of Black actors from the late 1920s onward, have been produced for the White gaze by White men. The Black community had thus never established a popularized aesthetic of its own or been the owner of that gaze that was catered to by film. It was not until the 1970s that Black film aesthetics were popularized with the creation of a genre referred to as blaxploitation. Blaxploitation has been recognized as beginning as early as 1966, but most critics mark its origin in the production of Melvin Van Peebles’ Sweet Sweetback’s BaadAsssss Song (1971) and its decline in the mid-1970s. The genre includes approximately seventy feature-length films, which were typically action movies, created by Black casts and crews for a Black audience — marking the first time in history that Hollywood studios made use of Black production. The naming of the genre separates these mainstream action movies that were backed and advertised by Hollywood studios and that garnered large Black audiences from Black independent films that were neither supported nor funded by Hollywood studios and did not have as large an audience. -
