The movie trailer looks unbelievable. The sequel to the Unbreakable and Split has finally happened.This psychological thriller produced by M. Night Shyamalan, starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson that can only get better with the addition of the young Mr. Charles Xavier himself, James McAvoy. The guy is a genius when it comes to his craft. His talent was shining in the first sequel: Split. I couldn’t wait to sit down with a large bowl of popcorn with layered butter and a box of snowcaps at my side to fully enjoy what was about to unfold. The lights fade in the movie theater and the opening credits begin. The trailers play showing the audience some amazing movies coming out in the near future. Looks like I’ll be coming back when some of these movies come out. The room grows pitch black and the first scene opens up with a dark scene, of course. It looks like a large dirty room, maybe a boarded-up factory. Kevin GIF ESSAY: Glass 2 (McAvoy) comes out of the shadows and into the only light in the room. America can be made. An important factor in developing and supporting a life-long love of reading is ensuring that all children see themselves in literature that reflects their lives and the world’s diversity. As students read about and learn that people of color are an integral and important part of the very fiber of our country, another step toward the eradication of racism in America can be made. The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is committed to helping educators become aware of and familiar with literature by authors of color and literature that provides an accurate account of the experiences of people of color. As her official website perfectly states, “Her voice was flexible, wide-ranging, accurate, and ageless. She could sing sultry ballads, sweet jazz, and imitate every instrument in an orchestra.” She enthralled audiences all over the world for decades, worked with everyone from Duke, Dizzy, and Count Basie to Nat King Cole and Sinatra, and left a recorded legacy that is second to none. Born Ella Jane Fitzgerald on April 25, 1917 in Newport News, Virginia, Ella endured some rough times as a child. Following the split of her parents, she moved with her mother to Yonkers, NY, and sadly lost her mother at age 15. Fighting poverty, Ella eventually used these difficult times as motiva- tion in life, and continued to harbor dreams of being an entertainer. She made her public singing debut at the Apollo Theater in Harlem on November 21, 1934 at age 17. -

Jessica Lange Regis Dialogue with Molly Haskell, 1997 Bruce Jenkins: Let me say that these dialogues have for the better part of this decade focused on that part of cinema devoted to narrative or dramatic filmmaking, and we've had evenings with actors, directors, cinematographers, and I would say really especially with those performers that we identify with the cutting edge of narrative filmmaking. In describing tonight's guest, Molly Haskell spoke of a creative artist who not only did a sizeable number of important projects but more importantly, did the projects that she herself wanted to see made. The same I think can be said about Molly Haskell. She began in the 1960s working in New York for the French Film Office at that point where the French New Wave needed a promoter and a writer and a translator. She eventually wrote the landmark book From Reverence to Rape on women in cinema from 1973 and republished in 1987, and did sizable stints as the film reviewer for Vogue magazine, The Village Voice, New York magazine, New York Observer, and more recently, for On the Issues. Her most recent book, Holding My Own in No Man's Land, contains her last two decades' worth of writing. I'm please to say it's in the Walker bookstore, as well. Our other guest tonight needs no introduction here in the Twin Cities nor in Cloquet, Minnesota, nor would I say anyplace in the world that motion pictures are watched and cherished. She's an internationally recognized star, but she's really a unique star. -

Survey: Both Democrats and GOP love 'This Is Us,' 'Game of Thrones' BY JUDY KURTZ - 03/03/20 © Courtesy of HBO The country may be more politically polarized than ever, but there are at least a couple things that both Democrats and Republicans agree on: They dig "This is Us" and "Game of Thrones." The NBC drama and former HBO fantasy series were some of the top picks on both sides of the aisle, according to a recent survey from E-Poll Market Research. Fifty-five percent of Democrats counted "This is Us" as their fave broadcast TV show, along with 68 percent of Republicans. Fifty-two percent of Democrats and 47 percent of Republicans surveyed also listed "Chicago Med" as one of their top TV picks. Other popular choices among Democrats included "Supernatural," Fox's "9-1-1" and "The Rookie," while Republicans said they delighted in "Grey's Anatomy," "Last Man Standing" and Chicago PD." The two parties had more than half of the top 20 TV shows in common, but there were a few notable differences among their boob tube choices. The results show that, of the Americans surveyed, Democrats prefer getting more laughs from their small screen fare, picking seven sitcoms as their favorites, compared to the GOP respondents' three comedy shows. A separate survey of top streaming and cable shows found that Democrats preferred Starz's "Power," with 63 percent of those surveyed naming it as their favored show, and "Game of Thrones," with 51 percent. BILL COSBY Biography Bill Cosby is, by any standards, one of the most influential stars in America today. Whether it be through concert appearances or recordings, television or films, commercials or education, Bill Cosby has the ability to touch people’s lives. His humor often centers on the basic cornerstones of our existence, seeking to provide an insight into our roles as parents, children, family members, and men and women. ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. Dorothy Heyward papers, ca. 1850-1976 (bulk 1918-1961) SCHS 180.00 Creator: Heyward, Dorothy, 1890-1961. Description: 18 linear ft. Biographical/Historical note: Playwright and novelist. The daughter of Herman Luyties Kuhns (b. 1855) and Dora Virginia Hartzell, Dorothy Hartzell Kuhns was born in Wooster, Ohio. Dorothy studied playwrighting at Harvard University, and as a fellow of George Pierce Baker's Workshop 47 she spent a summer's residency at the MacDowell Colony, an artists' retreat in New Hampshire, where she met South Carolina author DuBose Heyward (1885-1940). They married in September 1923. Their only child was Jenifer DuBose Heyward (later Mrs. Jenifer Wood, 1930-1984), who became a ballet dancer and made her home in New York, N.Y. Dorothy collaborated with her husband to produce a dramatic version of his novel "Porgy." The play became the libretto for the opera "Porgy & Bess" (first produced in 1935) by DuBose Heyward and George and Ira Gershwin. She also collaborated with her husband to produce "Mamba's Daughters," a play based on DuBose Heyward's novel by the same name. In 1940 Dorothy Heyward succeeded her late husband as the resident dramatist at the Dock Street Theater (Charleston, S.C.). In the years following his death she continued to write and published a number of works including the plays "South Pacific" (1943) and "Set My People Free" (1948, the story of the Denmark Vesey slave insurrection), as well as the libretto for the children's opera "Babar the Elephant" (1953). Earlier works by Dorothy Heyward include the plays "Love in a Cupboard" (1925), "Jonica" (1930), and "Cinderelative" (1930, in collaboration with Dorothy DeJagers), and the novels "Three-a-Day" (1930) and "The Pulitzer Prize Murders" (1932). -
