  • Building Cold War Warriors: Socialization of the Final Cold War Generation
BUILDING COLD WAR WARRIORS: SOCIALIZATION OF THE FINAL COLD WAR GENERATION Steven Robert Bellavia A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2018 Committee: Andrew M. Schocket, Advisor Karen B. Guzzo Graduate Faculty Representative Benjamin P. Greene Rebecca J. Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

The film eventually winds around to a particularly outlandish story involving Pablo Picasso and his dealings with a mysterious model (Oja Kodar). We also thank our editor, Lisa Renaud. About tHE mILKEn InstItutE The Milken Institute is an independent economic think tank whose mission is to improve the lives and economic conditions of diverse populations in the United States and around the world by helping business and public policy leaders identify and implement innovative ideas for creating broad-based prosperity. We put research to work with the goal of revitalizing regions and finding new ways to generate capital for people with original ideas. We focus on: human capital: the talent, knowledge, and experience of people, and their value to organizations, economies, and society; financial capital: innovations that allocate financial resources efficiently, especially to those who ordinarily would not have access to them, but who can best use them to build companies, create jobs, accelerate life-saving medical research, and solve long-standing social and economic problems; and social capital: the bonds of society that underlie economic advancement, including schools, health care, cultural institutions, and government services. By creating ways to spread the benefits of human, financial, and social capital to as many people as possible— by democratizing capital—we hope to contribute to prosperity and freedom in all corners of the globe.

  • Tyler Perry – the Trailblazer Award Waco Theater Center, 2019
TYLER PERRY – THE TRAILBLAZER AWARD WACO THEATER CENTER, 2019 On Saturday, June 1, 2019, actor, playwright and filmmaker Tyler Perry will receive The Trailblazer Award at WACO Theater Center’s Wearable Art Gala in Los Angeles. Perry’s inspirational journey from the hard streets of New Orleans to the heights of Hollywood's A-list is the stuff of American legend. Born into poverty and raised in a household scarred by abuse, Perry fought from a young age to find the strength, faith and perseverance that would later form the foundations of his much-acclaimed plays, films, books and shows. It was a simple piece of advice from Oprah Winfrey that set Perry's career in motion. Encouraged to keep a diary of his daily thoughts and experiences, he began writing a series of soul-searching letters to himself. The letters, full of pain and in time, forgiveness, became a healing catharsis. His writing inspired a musical, I Know I've Been Changed, and in 1992, Perry gathered his life's savings in hopes of staging it for sold out crowds. He spent all the money but the people never came, and Perry once again came face to face with the poverty that had plagued his youth. He spent months sleeping in seedy motels and his car but his faith - in God and, in turn, himself - only got stronger. He forged a powerful relationship with the church, and kept writing. In 1998 his perseverance paid off and a promoter booked I Know I've Been Changed for a limited run at a local church-turned-theatre.

October 28, 2020 The chase is on! Infamous cat-and-mouse rivals Tom & Jerry partner with Macy’s on a zany animatronic float to celebrate their new movie and the 94th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade® BURBANK, CA – October 28, 2020 – On November 26th Macy’s and Warner Bros. team up to bring fans a completely new spectacle of fun and fantasy, as beloved frenemies Tom and Jerry showcase their famous brand of comic chaos with an eye-popping float in the 94th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®. An American holiday tradition for more than 90 years with more than 50 million fans nationwide, the Parade is fitting partnership for the timeless pop culture icons as Tom and Jerry share in the good wishes of the season and offer fans a taste of what to expect in the big-screen event film “Tom & Jerry,” opening March 5, 2021. Titled “Tourist Trap,” the hilarious and engaging float features animatronics as well as smoke and other effects to spoof city life by throwing Tom into a series of wild squash-and-stretch sight gags the likes of which have entertained audiences everywhere. Among the indignities Tom endures are run-ins with a steamroller, a truck, a deceptively innocent-looking pretzel stand and a sewer gator. He even inflates like a mini Parade balloon as Jerry, ever the instigator, flies above the pandemonium in a drone helicopter. The float itself, a casualty of the endless mayhem, will lurch and limp down the Parade route. The animated/live-action adventure “Tom & Jerry,” starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Rob Delaney, Colin Jost, and Ken Jeong, debuts in theaters on March 5, 2021.
