    TYLER PERRY – THE TRAILBLAZER AWARD WACO THEATER CENTER, 2019 On Saturday, June 1, 2019, actor, playwright and filmmaker Tyler Perry will receive The Trailblazer Award at WACO Theater Center’s Wearable Art Gala in Los Angeles. Perry’s inspirational journey from the hard streets of New Orleans to the heights of Hollywood's A-list is the stuff of American legend. Born into poverty and raised in a household scarred by abuse, Perry fought from a young age to find the strength, faith and perseverance that would later form the foundations of his much-acclaimed plays, films, books and shows. It was a simple piece of advice from Oprah Winfrey that set Perry's career in motion. Encouraged to keep a diary of his daily thoughts and experiences, he began writing a series of soul-searching letters to himself. The letters, full of pain and in time, forgiveness, became a healing catharsis. His writing inspired a musical, I Know I've Been Changed, and in 1992, Perry gathered his life's savings in hopes of staging it for sold out crowds. He spent all the money but the people never came, and Perry once again came face to face with the poverty that had plagued his youth. He spent months sleeping in seedy motels and his car but his faith - in God and, in turn, himself - only got stronger. He forged a powerful relationship with the church, and kept writing. In 1998 his perseverance paid off and a promoter booked I Know I've Been Changed for a limited run at a local church-turned-theatre.

Hooks is a black feminist writer and theorist who focuses on race, class, gender and sexual oppression in all facets of society, in addition to media outlets and representations of black women. Hooks addresses how this affects black women’s lived experiences and in this article, their spectatorship of media portrayals of them. The goal of the article is to address the necessity of black female spectatorship to represent our lived experiences through our gaze and allow us agency over our representations in the media and how society views us as a whole.     Part 1 gazing outward The Spectrum of Feminist Reception history In many ways, one might say that feminist film history begins in 1975 with Laura Mulvey’s essay “visual Pleasure and narrative Cinema.” Certainly, it could be argued the essay generated cinema/feminist studies’ historical turn in response to Mulvey’s focus on the “male gaze” and her declaration of visual pleasure as essentially masculine, thereby seemingly eliding or erasing women’s actual experience in the movie theater. But I would argue Mulvey’s essay was in itself the moment of a “turn” to history, at least within feminist film studies. While there had been other noteworthy examinations of the representation of women in film, especially Mollyh askell’s From Reverence to Rape and Marjorie Rosen’s Popcorn Venus (both published in 1974), the need for a historical approach, that is, an effort to explain as well as describe events1 in cinema’s development from a feminist critical perspective now became crystallized around Mulvey’s essay. “visual Pleasure and narrative Cinema” adds gender to the idealized spectator of 1970s film theory, there- by immediately inserting the concept in a social/cultural context. hence, I would argue that Mulvey’s essay functions as a metahistory, but a history nonetheless, since it outlines a larger social/cultural category as the driving internal mechanism of cinema. Whether or not we label this as history, Mulvey’s close textual analysis of the politics of looking, which made women solely objects and never subjects of the gaze, generated a search for women’s agency elsewhere than on the screen itself.

Specifically, we examine the multiple and varying ways in which the character of Madea performs for different audiences by examining how the roles of violence, religion and wisdom operate on stage and screen. My reading of the character of Madea veers against the common narrative her existence being just another recycled trope of men disguised as women only to perform in stereotypical and demonizing behavior. I argue Madea represents what I refer to as a “trans*female character”, within the space of Perry’s popular film that feature her. Read through the lens of being trans*female character, I propose this shift in analysis and critique of cinematic displays of drag helps to transgress beyond male/female binaries of acceptable and possible visual gender representations.
