Name: BASUDHARA SEN Date of Degree: JULY, 2013 Title of Study: ETHNIC IDENTITY FORMATION AND RITUAL DYNAMICS: AN ANALYSIS OF FIRST-GENERATION ASIAN INDIAN IMMIGRANTS IN THE SOUTHERN PLAINS REGIONS OF THE UNITED STATES Major Field: SOCIOLOGY Abstract: This study focuses on issues dealing with ethnicity, community, and especially identity construction among first-generation Asian Indian immigrants who reside in the Southern Plains region of the United States. Identity not only refers to what we have, but what we do or practice in our everyday lives. Employing structural ritualization theory (Knottnerus 1997, 2011), this study explores how three dimensions of cultural practices or ritualized behaviors - regional-ethnic, pan-ethnic, and host - play a crucial role in constructing the “multi-ritual” ethnic identity of first-generation Asian Indian immigrants. The analysis of ritualized behaviors helps to determine the rank or overall importance of ritualized symbolic practices (RSPs). The higher rank of an RSP the greater the impact on the cognitions and behaviors of immigrants as they construct a multi-ritual ethnic identity. This social-psychological understanding of ethnic identity formation argues that immigrants interpret their behaviors, i.e., they continuously evaluate what the ritualized behaviors mean in their lives and make decisions to create one or more forms of ethnic identity. This qualitative study used thirty-one in-depth semi-structured interviews with observation method. The results indicate that in the process of ethnic identity formation, first-generation Indian immigrants negotiate with their distinctive pan-Indian cultural practices that separate them from others, retain and alter their regional-Indian ritual practices to celebrate their internal cultural variations, and bring their ethnicity to the mainstream society through selective pan and/or regional-ethnic ritualized practices. This study adds to the social constructionist perspective of ethnicity emphasizing the situational dimension of ritual dynamics and contributes to the micro-sociological analysis of ethnic identity. It enhances our empirical knowledge of an under studied Asian Indian immigrant community and provides an extension to the analytic potential of structural ritualization theory. The festival of ‘Holi’ is proving to be an environmental risk due to the toxic colors used during the celebrations. Unlimited use of such toxic colors affects the human health an ecological balance. Present study analysis the trend and status of pollutants generated during festivals. As per data obtained from M.P. pollution control board Gwalior, it is observed that noise level is high than CPCB standards at three locations of Gwalior city. SPM level is also high during Deepawali festival. Study shows that characteristics of water are also affected. Celebrate dry Holi. Don’t use water. Use natural and home- made holi colors. Stone idols are worshipped. Idols made of stone are best as they can be worshipped every year. Immerse only those idols which are made of unbaked mud, clay or other biodegradable material. Use less number of firecrackers. The manufacture, sale or use of fire-crackers generating noise level exceeding 125 dB(AI) or 145 dB(C)pk at 4 meters distance from the point of bursting shall be prohibited. Ingredients 3/4 Cup of Urad Dal (White) 1 and 1/4 Cup of Palm Jaggery 1/4 Cup of Gingelly Oil Pinch of Salt 1/2 Cup of water or as needed Method Grate the palm jaggery and keep it aside. Dry roast the urad dal lightly, let it cool for sometime. In a pan, heat the water, after it boils, add the palm jaggery , let it be in the flame until jaggery melts and stir it occasionally. Once it done, turn off the flame Powdered the urad dal finely or rava consistency using mixie or spice grinder. Using tea strainer, strain the jaggery syrup to get rid of impurities. In a medium flame, add the Jaggery syrup to the same pan, add a pinch of salt, bring it to a boil, add urad dal powder little by little and stir well to avoid lumps. Add oil little by little and keep on stirring until the mixture leaves the sides of a pan. Serve hot or cold with a tsp of ghee. Make a small balls, in the center, add a tsp of ghee.

One day while bathing, her husband was caught by a ferocious crocodile in shallow waters. Bhattacharjee School of Religious Studies McGill University Montréal, Canada A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts August 2017 © 2017 Aditya Bhattacharjee Bhattacharjee 2 Abstract In this thesis, I offer new insight into the Hindu Bangladeshi community of Montreal, Quebec, and its relationship to community religious space. The thesis centers on the role of the Montreal Sanatan Dharma Temple (MSDT), formally inaugurated in 2014, as a community locus for Montreal’s Hindu Bangladeshis. I contend that owning temple space is deeply tied to the community’s mission to preserve what its leaders term “cultural authenticity” while at the same time allowing this emerging community to emplace itself in innovative ways in Canada. I document how the acquisition of community space in Montreal has emerged as a central strategy to emplace and renew Hindu Bangladeshi culture in Canada. Paradoxically, the creation of a distinct Hindu Bangladeshi temple and the ‘traditional’ rites enacted there promote the integration and belonging of Bangladeshi Hindus in Canada. The relationship of Hindu- Bangladeshi migrants to community religious space offers useful insight on a contemporary vision of Hindu authenticity in a transnational context.     SWAMINARAYAN AND ETHICS; A RELIGIOHISTORICAL STUDY by DAVRAJ KAMAL submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS in the subject RELIGIOUS STUDIES at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA SUPERVISOR: PROFESSOR C DU P LE ROUX NOVEMBER 1994 SUMMARY As part of the Phenomenological Method used in this dissertation, the research work applied the hermeneutical concepts of bhakti, karma and moksha. Focus was on the role played by the guru, the sadhus and devotees of the Swaminarayan Movement and how they related t~ their religious, ethical and social obligations. Their responses to ethical scriptures were evaluated, especially with a view to determining the extent to which ethical injunctions permeates, enhances, uplifts and shapes the adherents spiritually,morally and socially. Swaminarayan ethics was also placed within the context of Classical Hindu Texts and in particular, the work of Ramanuja and his Vishistadvaita philosophy. Further, it has been observed that the quest for the Ultimate Reality (Purushottam) is through their relationship with Akshar, Guru Pramukh Swami, the model of ethical excellence whose charisma binds the fibre of the Movement and his role serves both the ethical and transcendental plane of the Movement.
