Shogi Yearbook 2015 Shogifestival 2015 in Ludwigshafen/Germany

Shogifestival 2015 in Ludwigshafen/Germany

Let’s assume that two super-grandmasters are visiting an amateur chess tournament, playing an exhibition game against each other and simultaneous games against the participants of the tournament. Or two top-football players are training at an amateur club. Incredible! But something similar happened at the shogifestival in Ludwigshafen/Germany.

Shogi has the same origin with the common chess, But it is characterised by the fact that taken pieces of the opponent can be dropped as own forces again. Thereby the game gets a drive which makes it different from all other variants of chess. Millions of people play shogi in Japan, in Germany there are about 100 players who take part in tournaments.

Venue of the shogi event in Ludwigshafen with prominent visitors was the ‚Ostasieninstitut‘, which is located next to the Rhine.

On May 2nd and 3rd the 2nd shogifestival in Ludwigshafen/Germany took place. 44 participants from Japan, France and Germany were fighting for every point. Among the players were 26 students, so the percentage of young players was high. One reason is that some schools offer shogi workshops to inspire their students for the Japanese strategy game.

The tournament hall where the final round of the shogi tournament took place.

In the afternoon of the second day an extraordinary event took place. and Akihito Hirose, two professional shogi players, visited the shogi amateurs. They just were on a trip through Europe and took some hours time for the festival in Ludwigshafen.

Akira Watanabe and Akihito Hirose definitely belong to the top 10 of shogi professionals in Japan. In addition to their obligations as players they are commentators of shogi games in Japanese television and perform at shogi events.

147

Shogi Yearbook 2015 Shogifestival 2015 in Ludwigshafen/Germany

The professionals played first a rapid game against each other. Very soon the game became sharp and finally ended with a successful attack of Akira Watanabe. After that the two professionals analyzed their game and explained several key positions.

After that Watanabe and Hirose played simultaneous games against the tournament participants. These games differ from simultaneous games in chess. On the one hand professionals play against amateurs with , that is they have 1 – 6 pieces less depending on the strength of their opponent. This makes the games for both sides more interesting because the amateurs are not crushed at once by the professionals.

On the other hand the games don’t end with resignation but Watanabe and Hirose returned to key positions of the game, proposed alternatives and gave hints for improving the playing skills. The intention of simultaneous games in shogi is to teach and not to achieve an extraordinary result for the professional.

Shogi Yearbook 2015 A little bit chess, but not too much …

A little bit chess, but not too much … The two shogi professionals Akira Watanabe and Akihito Hirose visited the shogi festival in Ludwigshafen on May 3rd .They played an exhibition game, played many simultaneous games and gave an interview. Here they answered questions concerning their everyday life, training, computers and good sleep.

How does a typical day of a shogi pro look like? Watanabe: A professional player usually plays 40-50 tournament games every year. On the other days we spend time on training. But it belongs to the tasks as well to spread shogi, perform on events and comment on TV etc.

Akira Watanabe (9th ) was guest of the shogi festivals 2015 in Ludwigshafen.

Amateurs are often told to solve tsumes . This would be very important to increase playing ability. Do you as a professional solve tsumes? Hirose: It depends on the player. I like tsume-shogi very much. I think, that all players carry their tsumes with them to keep their mind fresh. . Are you training with the help of a computer? Hirose: No, I don’t us a computer for training. Watanabe: I am using it for 10 years. When I am analyzing I am saving my results there. Meanwhile the computer is a very important tool for me.

152

Shogi Yearbook 2015 A little bit chess, but not too much …

What is your most important hint to become a better shogi player? Hirose: Amateurs should find opponents with their own skills. May be a little bit stronger than oneself and they should try to learn something out of the games. Watanabe: It is now much possible with the help of computers and the internet. You can adjust the level at the software. It is also my hint to choose a level a little bit stronger than oneself.

Your games often end late in the evening, sometime after a byoyomi. Are you dreaming afterwards of shogi? Hirose: The mind doesn’t stop working. You keep on dealing with it and you can’t sleep well. Watanabe: I leave the house at 10 a.m. and return at 1 a.m. in the night and the mind keeps on working. My method for relaxing is watching football until I am getting tired and can sleep.

Mr. Watanabe, you have played in the year 2007 against the software ‚Bonanza‘ and could win. Would you like to play a match against a computer nowadays? Watanabe: In 2007 the skills of the software have been completely different. But today you have to confirm that the software is much more developed. You can’t be sure that we two professional players would win. There are chances but it is nowadays another game. Maybe there will be a match against a computer sometime in the future.

How can shogi be spread outside of Japan? Hirose: Very important are the local shogi fans. Without them it is not possible. The has a responsibility as well to provide means and support events. And the Shogi professionals are important. But those events have to be prepared well so that the people know the background.

What are you doing in your free time when you don’t play shogi? Do you like other strategy games or do you play chess? Watanabe: I am not playing chess but I also like the game Go. I am not very strong but I like it. Hirose: I also like Go, a little bit chess, but not too much …

Thank you very much for the interview and all the best for the future.

Thanks to Prof. Dr. Frank Rövekamp of the Ostasieninstitut Ludwigshafen for the translation from Japanese to German.

Shogi Yearbook 2015 Shogi variant – Micro Shogi

Shogi variant – Micro Shogi

You want to play a different sort of shogi, wild and unpredictable? Then try Micro Shogi!

Here are the rules: The board has 5 rows and 4 columns. The starting position looks like this: First row from left to right: Silver General, Gold General, Bishop, King Second row: one pawn in front of the king

Each piece moves exactly like in normal shogi, but promotion is completely different. If a piece captures another one, you have to promote. If a promoted piece captures another piece, it has to be demoted again. There is also another difference in which value promotion takes place.

Promotion Demotion King No promotion Silver Lance Silver Gold Rook Gold Bishop Tokin Bishop Pawn Knight Pawn

This means that pieces can be trapped. If e.g. a Knight captures a piece on the last row, it demotes into a pawn … and can’t move no more. Trapped pieces stay on the board and may be captured by the opponent. Captured pieces may be dropped anywhere and you can choose the side facing up. You may drop two pawns on the same column.

Take your shogi pieces and give it a try!
